MASTERING
THE MODES
Mixolydian Solo 1
JTC SAYS:
A Mixolydian: A B C# D E F# G
We now move another step further away from Aeolian. We changed the minor 6th
to a major 6th to create the Dorian mode, and we now raise the minor 3rd to a major
3rd to create Mixolydian. Were now in a major tonality, but the Dorian and Mixolydian
modes are quite close cousins, often being associated with bluesy or funky sounds,
somewhere in between outright major or minor.
As Ciro demonstrates here, you can often use the minor 3rd (C in this case), giving a
Dorian sound within the Mixolydian environment. This is possibly because our ears
are so comfortable with the blues sound, where the line is blurred between major
and minor. Ciro bends the B note to C (not C#) in measure 2 and then does that
classic bluesy C-C# slide in measure 4.
