2. In general, valves in the circulatory system

[1K]
A. permit blood to circulate rapidly
B prevent blood from moving too rapidly
C. prevent blood from moving the wrong way
D. stop circulation when necessary

3. Atherosclerosis is the hardening of

[1K]

C. Arteries travelling to the lungs
D. The coronary arteries

4. A land based well watered plant has a transpiration rate measured at 34mm 3 H2O h-1 at 10am in the
morning. The transpiration rate was found to increase significantly later in the afternoon. What could
explain this change?
[1U]
A. The clouds moved away in the afternoon and the sun came out
B. The humidity increased in the afternoon and it became cloudier than in the morning
C. It became colder in the afternoon and wind decreased also
D. The wind remained the same as before and there was no change in the amount of sunshine or
wind.
5. In the picture to the right, Figure 3 shows an arteriole (small artery) (1) connected to a venule
(small vein) (4) by two capillaries. The two small squares underneath represent cells in the surrounding
tissue.
Arrow 3 could demonstrate the movement of
A. Urea
B. Glucose
C. Carbon dioxide
D. A and C

(heart to lungs to heart) and the systemic circuit (heart to body to heart) in
a normal adult person.

a. State the arterial pressure of the pulmonary circuit.

b. State and explain a relationship between average pressure and the
composition of the walls of arteries and veins.

12. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major cause of death in developed
countries. Smoking is a major risk factor for death due to CHD, and the
trend in Europe is for fewer people to die as fewer people are smoking.
Unfortunately, even people who do not smoke, but who are regularly
exposed to the smoke of others can suffer from CHD because of PASSIVE
SMOKING (inhaling other peoples smoke.)
(a)

The graph shows deaths from coronary heart disease caused by

passive smoking in Germany in 1983.

13. An experiment to measure water loss by part of a plant was set up as shown
below. The water loss was measured using a photometer, which measures the
volume of water loss. and is shown in the table. The scale on the potometer
was accurate to the nearest 0.1ml.

Treatment
A. Normal
B. Bright light
C. Moving air
D. High humidity

(b) Identify a problem between the accuracy of the potometer scale and the data
in the table.

[1U]
(c) The average water loss for the high humidity was less than for all the other
readings. Explain this.

(d) Another potted plant of the same type was set up in the same location.
However, this plant had less leaves. Suggest with a reason how the results
for the less leafy plant may differ from the ones recorded in the table.
