achel Ball, 24, met Argentine-born Mariano
Silvestri, 29, when they both began work at one of
Dubai’s five-star hotels on the same day. It was the
first time Rachel had lived outside her native UK,
and also the first time for Mariano outside his home
country – as a result, the language barrier caused a few problems at
first, but after a month’s crash course in English for Mariano, the
couple began dating. If you could really call it dating – as struggling
hotel workers they used to meet on the rooftops of their buildings
and watch the growing Dubai construction. After one year and a trip
to the UK later to meet Rachel’s parents, Mariano proposed with
an ornate, turn of the century platinum and diamond ring Rachel
inherited from her grandmother at the age of 13. The hen party
was organised by Rachel’s bridesmaid Luciana, who was originally
a friend of Mariano’s from Argentina, which had a Venice theme
where the girls took to the waterways of the Madinat Jumeirah in
Abras, while wearing ornate masks.

WEDDING TIPS:
● Only three things last after the
wedding day – memories, rings
and pictures. Make sure the rings
and the photographer are the best
you can afford.
● Don’t be afraid to ask friends

and family to help – my mum was

the greatest wedding planner,
and a friend who couldn’t attend
the wedding took care of all our
stationery as a gift. It was the best
present we got.
● Don’t sweat the small stuff, it

sorts itself out in the end. If I can

every continent and families who
don’t speak the same language,

THE WEDDING
We thought about marrying in Mexico as a half-
way point between the UK and Argentina, but
in the end marrying in my village was the best
option – we were blessed with great weather
and plenty of family and friends, and now we’re
planning to do it all again in Argentina.
● Venue: St Paul’s, Helsby, the village church
I have been a member of since a baby.
● Reception venue: The Heathercliffe Country
House Hotel. I used to work here in my early
teens as a waitress! It’s an elegant old country
house and has been home to big names and
royalty, including John Paul Getty and the exiled
Queen of Yugoslavia.
● Theme: English country garden – with an
Argentine flair
● Guests: We had 150 people who travelled
from as close as half a mile down the road, to
as far away as Australia, Argentina, Miami and
Oman, which made it all the more special.
● Dress: I got my Maggie Sottero gown from
Aristocrats in Chester. Walking into the shop
was like entering an elegant parlour. I also had
a cathedral-length veil studded with Swarovski
crystals. I was worried that it would be awkward
and annoying, but it wasn’t and the effect was
truly fantastic.
● Bridesmaids: The lilac dresses were set
off perfectly by the Dorothy bags my auntie
made for the occasion – gorgeous. And my
sister, best Dubai friend and best home friend’s
daughter were picture-perfect!
● Cake: The cake was made by my mother’s
friend, who also made cupcakes for the evening
buffet. Throughout the evening, they received
more compliments than my dress!
● Flowers: We kept it in the family with the
flowers, with one of my great uncles providing
the amazing English country flower bridal
bouquets, buttonholes and beautiful white
birdcage centrepieces – as well as the simply
gorgeous 1911 Ford Model T wedding car.
● Food: The meal was a traditional roast
Cheshire turkey, accompanied by Argentine
wine from Mariano’s province. We tried to mix
and match the cultures as much as we could.
● Photographer: As soon as I saw Liam’s
website I knew he was the photographer for
me – I’d fly him to the other side of the world
if I had to. He was a true professional, made
everyone relaxed and just got on with the job
with minimal intrusion.
● Unique touches: Our vicar was wonderful,
learning her opening welcome in Spanish
to make Mariano’s family feel comfortable.
My father also gave part of his speech in
Spanish! We also had my old band play at
the reception – and I just had to join in for a
few numbers.

ritish-born Hiva and Egyptian-born Khaled, both 25,
met at the American University in Dubai during their
first class in 2004, and their official courtship, lasted
two years. Ever the romantic, Khaled showered Hiva
with gifts and flowers as the friendship blossomed
into something stronger. Their fairytale first date saw Khaled
reserve the entire BiCE Sky Bar at the top of the Hilton Jumeirah
for the evening, with candles and sweeping views of The Palm
Jumeirah. On their second year anniversary, Khaled recreated the
romance of their first date, and during dinner dropped to his knee
and proposed. An extravagant engagement party followed on Fort
Island, Mina A’Salam, on November 28, 2008. Preparation started
almost immediately, and as perfectionists and hands-on organisers,
every element was precision planned. After last minute chaos pre-
wedding, the day was heavenly and exactly what the newlywed
couple wanted it to be and more.

THE WEDDING
● Venue: We chose the Marina Garden at the
Burj Al Arab because it is the most luxurious
hotel in the world and it is the greatest
monument of Dubai.
● Reception: Burj Al Arab (Al Falak Ballroom)
● Theme: We went for a ‘modern with a
twist’ theme with Persian influence, and a
Royal Purple colour scheme – because it’s our
favourite colour and ‘the’ colour of 2009.
● Guests: Blessing ceremony 75, wedding
reception 150.
● Ring size: The cut is round brilliant, 4 carat;
the diamond is from Belgium and the ring
setting from Switzerland.
● The dress: I had two dresses – the ceremony
dress was by Maggie Sottero and the wedding
dress Sa belle also by Maggie Sottero, both
from Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles.
● Shoes: White high heel shoes, which I bought
in a boutique on Rodeo Drive.
● Veil: I had a very small but to the point veil,
which I bought from the Bridal Room.
● Groom suit: Giorgio Armani Tuxedo
● Cake: It was two metres in height and made
in the Burj Al Arab’s pastry kitchen. It was vanilla
and fresh cream, which was delicious.
● Flowers: Empire Events did the flowers and
we had white and lavender avalanche roses,
purple presilas, orchid's and hydrangea’s.
Presilas are beautiful but rare and only come
around that season.
● Favours: Patchi chocolate gift boxes, heart-
shaped china ornaments customised with our
names, date and venue. Gold bags with gold
Hershey's kisses. Portable studio pictures given
to the guests on the day.
● Food: All food was served silver-service
style. For starters, we had carpaccio, shrimp
cocktail, smoked salmon and tomato and
mozzarella caprese. The main was fillet mignon
with a selection of three sauces, king prawns
and hamour in lemon butter sauce, marinated
chicken breast in a cream white mushroom
sauce, fettuccini Alfredo and stuffed favioli.
● Dessert: Crème Brule, tiramisu, chocolate
dipped strawberries, chocolate éclairs,
chocolate profiteroles, mini heart shape
desserts, exotic fruit platter and an international
cheese board.
● Honeymoon: It started in our panoramic
suite at the Burj Al Arab followed by the
Shangri-La Resort in Maldives. It was heaven
on earth and the water and sunsets were truly
phenomenal.
● Any little unique extras: We used western
vows as a part of traditional Persian ceremony,
which made the ceremony different. We
also threw doves, and the Persian table was
decorated with lots of unique items.

outh African-born Martine, 30, met Jason, 32, in 2001 having
just turned 21. Chosen to represent South Africa for the opening
of the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World in Florida,
Martine ended up living next to Jason in staff accommodation
– she was immediately intrigued by his childhood growing up
in Boston. After dating for six months, both Martine and Jason’s contracts
ended and they returned to their respective home countries of South Africa
and America. After staying in touch over the phone, romance lept in and
Jason bought a ticket to Cape Town to see Martine. After living together
for four months, the couple moved to London in 2002 for two years, before
moving to Dubai, where Martine’s family lives. On holiday in Nepal, in
a hidden garden in Kathmandu, Jason proposed producing a stunning
custom-made ring from Damas. They chose Dubai as the destination for
their wedding – middle ground between their two homes – spending six
months arranging the wedding of a lifetime.

● Ceremony venue: St Francis of Assisi

Media City – the ballroom was perfect as
it had black detail on the walls, which was
very modern and fit with my theme.
● Theme: White, silver and black. These
are my favourite colours and suited the
venue perfectly.
● Number of guests: We decided 60 was
a good amount – friends from Dubai and
our close family from abroad.
● Rings: We bought both our rings from
Safari Gems in the Gold and Diamond
Park. Mine had two rows of diamonds. We
are hoping to get them engraved on our
one year anniversary.
● The dress: My sister took me to The
Wedding Shop where and I tried on 11
gowns. I chose number 10, an Alfred
Angelo. A beautiful white dress with a
strapless sequined top. The skirt was wide
and long – modern yet fun.
● Shoes: Silver, sparkly strappies
bought from Aldo with a low heel, as
I knew I’d be on my feet all day.
● Veil: Handmade by Barbara who
was recommended to me by The
Wedding Shop.
● Groom suit: The suit was made by
Montexa in Satwa, Jason picked out a
Bostonian style cut that fit perfectly and
looked great on the day.
● Cake: I was recommended Frosted.
The cake was perfect with three tiers
– dark chocolate with buttercream,
white chocolate mud cake with vanilla
buttercream and fruit cake with brandy.
● Flowers: As my theme was white, silver

have both a city and island break visiting,
Athens, Mykonos and Santorini.

hen Mihaela Dimitru
found herself just three
months away from her
big day, sans dress, 10kgs
overweight and with no idea how to how
to start her beauty and fitness regime, she
started to panic. “I used to be a size 10 but
now I’m a size 14 and because of the weight
gain, I don’t even feel like looking for a
dress…” Mihaela grumbled three months
back. But now 10kgs lighter, looking radiant
after her bridal makeover, and dressed to
stun in her customised Meher & Riddhima
couture gown, you wouldn’t believe she was
the same woman. The transformation began
when she went looking for a photographer
and stumbled across the ‘bridal makeover’
service – which includes three months of
personal training, a nutritionist, a personal
shopper and stylist, plus tips and tricks from
a beauty expert to help every bride reach
that often far off final goal of looking (and
feeling) absolutely perfect on their big day.
THE FITNESS MAKEOVER
Under the bridal makeover service, Mihaela
was appointed her very own personal
trainer three times a week. Determined
to trim down and with 10kgs to lose,
the trainer put her on a strict regime of
running, kayaking and Pilates. The run was
scheduled down on the beach to put her
body under greater extremes and encourage
greater weight loss. “It was incredibly tough
going as the weather was still pretty hot,
and not being very fit meant I kept running
out of breath. But I soon found myself
getting used to it and the kilos just melted

off.” Due to Mihaela’s ‘apple’ type physique
(heavy set shoulders and round stomach),
the personal trainer also suggested sea
kayaking. Once a week they hit the sea
for a 4-6km kayak, which helped to trim
Mihaela’s waist and flatten her stomach.
“I wanted to look sexy in my gown so I
needed to make sure my stomach was super
flat and my shoulders and arms were toned
– for those, kayaking really did the trick.”
Mihaela was also instructed to practice
Pilates every day. “I was given one private
session a week with the instructor but also
a workout DVD to take home for daily
homework. I had never done Pilates before,
but the results were amazing. Not only did
my posture improve, but I definitely toned
up and became more lithe. Most dancers
do Pilates and I completely understand why
– it’s a fantastic way to sculpt the body.”

THE DIET MAKEOVER
To ensure Mihaela balanced her weight-
loss efforts with a healthy diet, she visited
a personal nutritionist. She was asked to
record everything she ate and drank over
the next three months, with a weekly
‘check-in’ to make sure Mihaela stuck to
the rigid programme. “She suggested I
ate six small meals a day and cook meals
from the GI Diet recipe book, which
encompassed plenty of salads, lean meat
and wholegrains. I also had to avoid sugar,
processed food, anything high in fat, dairy,
refined grains and complex carbs – and I
wasn’t allowed to drink anything bar water
and green tea! Within a week I discovered
I had boundless energy and my skin, eyes
and hair really started to glow.”After just
two months, with the weight steadily
shifting, Mihaela’s nutritionist signed
her up for the Health Factory’s Detox
Programme. “This included six calorie-
controlled meals delivered six times
six times a week to help me detox and
shed that final ‘bloat’. I lost 4kgs more
and felt fantastic. Plus, I didn’t have to
shop or cook, which was an absolute gift
during the busy weeks leading up to the
wedding, when I barely even had time
to think!” Having seen the benefits of the
well-balanced eating plan, Mihaela’s diet
has since the wedding, continued down
the healthy route. “I used to indulge in
moussaka, curries and high-fat foods,
and of course the weight just piled on.
Now I’ve learnt to eat healthly because
I can really see and feel the benefits.
It was a long-term investment to have
a nutritionist – it changed my whole
perspective and approach to eating. Now
I don’t try to diet, I just eat healthly.”

unique and more akin to an Oscar’s gown
rather than the traditional bridal dress. After
much research and visiting various tailors,
boutiques, shopping malls and designers
with her shopper, she settled on Meher &
Riddhima, who made her a stunning custom-

finalise and I met with the make-up artist

Riddhima before and I was really pleasantly
surprised. I felt like a celebrity having my
own personal shopper to find me the ‘perfect’
designer to cater for my specific needs. She

right flattering fit, material and detailing.
We met several times over the course of the
months and conceptualised the dress bit by
bit. I cannot express how amazing it is having
such royal treatment. I can see why celebrities
have their own personal stylists. They open
your eyes to a whole new world that you
didn’t know existed – like having your own
personal little black book of style.” Mihaela
also found the convenience of having someone
by your side, who you trust implicitly, to help
you through every step of putting together

I had great skin and features.”
Having decided to indulge in a day of
pampering the day before the wedding, the
beauty expert went off to research where
she could get the perfect pre-wedding

this does not occur, a written declaration must
be provided stating that there is no dowry.

Following the ceremony a UAE marriage

If the marriage is conducted outside of the
UAE and you want the agreement to be
legalised here the documentation will need
to be taken to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of the United Arab Emirates for ratification.
If the certificate is in another language other
than Arabic it will need to be translated and
ratified by the Ministry of Justice.
Step three
Final authentication, for non-UAE citizens,
is then required by your embassy or consulate,
which involves a varying fee.

● Original passports and photocopies need to
be presented by all involved.

● If the bride’s father is deceased, a Sharia

father cannot be present, he must provide a
letter of consent, along with a certified copy of
his passport to verify his signature.
● In the case that the bride is Muslim and her
father is not, a certificate of no impediment
(no objection) is required from either the
bride’s embassy or consulate.
● If a bride is widowed or divorced, documents
need to be provided as proof.
● Non-UAE citizens should check with their
embassies as some will require no objection
letters from their employer’s company or
clearance from the Police Directorate stating
they have no criminal records. Fees can vary.
● Any documents necessary for the legalisation
of the wedding, which were acquired outside
of the UAE such as birth certificates, need to be
translated into Arabic by a legal translator.

After the engagement
● Choose a wedding date.

● Organise a second meeting
with your religious head and

timings and other details.
● Finalise wedding cake options
and place an order.
● Book transport to and from
the ceremony and reception.
● Discuss flowers arrangements
with a florist, keeping in mind
what will be in season.
● Book a musician, band or DJ
for the reception.
● Decide on the honeymoon
destination, book a hotel,
transport and check passports.
● Pick your wedding stationery
and order of services and place

● Choose your wedding bands

● Decide on your wedding
dress, groom’s suit and the
wedding parties attire for fittings.
● Confirm wedding-guest list.
Two months before
● Confirm all of your prior
bookings.
● Give your caterer the final head
count noting any special dietary
requirements.
● Buy all of your accessories
to match your dress including
jewellery and shoes.
● Speak to a hair and make-up
artist and discuss potential looks.
● Book another dress fitting
appointment.
● If you are getting married in a
hotel make sure you have a room
booked for the day and/or night
of the wedding for getting ready.
● Decide if you are having
centrepieces, discuss with florist
and order them.
● Notify your bank and any
other official government bodies
that require your change of
name status.
One month before
● Book your hair and make-up
artist for a trial and arrange
timings for your wedding day.
● Collect your wedding bands.
● Arrange for a trusted friend or
family member to bring the cake
knife, toasting glasses, ring bearer
pillow and flower girl baskets.
● Draw up a seating plan.
● Finalise the outfits for the
groom, bridesmaids, best man
and bridal party.
● Finalise any last details such
as gifts for the guests and the
wedding party.
● Confirm running order of the
ceremony with all relevant parties
taking part in the ceremony.
Two weeks before
● Speak to your DJ and confirm a
first dance song for the reception.
✿ Have a final fitting of your
dress with your veil, jewellery and
shoes. It helps to practice walking.
● Reconfirm the honeymoon
arrangements and pack for
the vacation.
● Confirm the number of guests
with your caterer and finalise the
seating plan.
One week before
● Arrange a rehearsal at the venue.
● Re-confirm your photographer,
florist, hair and make-up artist,
transport and catering.
● Liaise with your photographer
regarding specific shots you want.
● Ensure anyone doing a
speech has it written and ready
to be presented.
● Prepare an emergency wedding
kit including dress repair materials,
any essential make-up, tissues and
other important items.
The day before
● Help to decorate the reception
venue if necessary and make sure
all final details are in place.
● Arrange for the cake to be
delivered to the reception.
● Book your wedding party in
for manicures and last minute
beauty treatments.
● Relax and have an early night.
On the day
✿ Start the day with a good
breakfast, as you will be on your
feet most of the day.
✿ Ensure you allow plenty of
time to have your hair and
make-up done.
✿ Get everyone dressed and ready.
The mother of the bride should
leave fifteen minutes before the
bride and her father.
✿ At the ceremony, the speeches
run in the order of father-of-the-
bride, followed by the groom, then
the best man.
✿ At the end of the evening, it is
tradition for the bride and groom
to leave the reception first.
After the day
