In the 21st century, I think the heroes will

be the people who will improve the
quality of life, fight poverty and introduce
more sustainability.
Bertrand Piccard

Hello everyone
our beautiful weather has continued, with
some much needed rain and very big
seas.
Our May meeting again focused on safety and we urge
you all to join the new Barwon Heads Neighbourhood
Watch; to lock your cars, be smart with your personal
belongings, and get to know your neighbours.
We would like to thank the people who have donated
money to the Barwon Heads Association so that we can
seek professional advice and support. We welcome our
new members and look forward to many more.

Planning Zones in Barwon Heads

On the 19th May we presented to the Managing Residential
Development Taskforce Chaired by Kathy Mitchell,
Chief Panel Member of Planning Panels Victoria. Shelly
Fanning, Town Planner & Lawyer from Coastal
Planning supported us.
We have previously discussed that the purpose of the
Taskforce was to consider the process by which the new
residential zones were implemented in 2013 by; and review
the current application of the zones that allow for residential
development in the context of managing Melbourne and
Victoria's residential growth in a sustainable manner and
improving housing affordability. We put in a detailed
submission in March and had 20 minutes to ensure the
Taskforce understood the risks to Barwon Heads of the
extensive application of development zones. Here is our
submission:
Thank you for the opportunity to make comment. If we had
not received the invitation to participate and make comment
to the Taskforce we would not have informed ourselves of
the details of the new zones and would not have understood
the risks. We understand that the new residential zones are
statewide, and therefore will never reflect acute local area
issues. However the current zones in Barwon Heads don't
appear to meet the stated objectives of the reformed
residential zones. There is little consideration of the
competing needs and risks to our coastal village, and the
stated guidelines for sustainable planning and design. The
Barwon Heads Association has 170 current members and
close relationships with other groups in Barwon Heads.
Since we have started this public discussion of the impact of
the new zones a number of prominent traders have also
joined as a show of support to our campaign to protect the
coastal character of our village from over development.
We request the Taskforce to refer this matter back to CoGG
and seek a review of the implementation of the new
residential codes to Barwon Heads, for the following
reasons:
1. The process applied by CoGG was rushed and failed to
communicate the implications of the zones; CoGG
acknowledges there was no time for soft consultation (not
that we consider real consultation soft); there were over 1,
000 submissions to the Barwon Heads Structure Plan;
2. The new zones ignore and totally contradict previous
planning for Barwon Heads the:
- Bellarine Localised Planning Statement 2015
(BLPS2015)

- Barwon Heads Structure Plan 2006-2016

(BHSP2010)
- Bellarine Peninsula Strategic Plan 2006-2016
(BPSP)
- Barwon Heads Urban Design Framework Sept
2003 (BH UDF2003)
- City of Greater Geelong Residential Character Study
2001 (GRCS2001)3. Barwon Heads is not a Growth
Zone, and does not appear to fit the criteria of an Activity
Centre. The broad application of the RGZ makes a total
mockery of previous strategic planning and in particular the
Barwon Heads Structure Plan 2010. Barwon Heads does
not fit into the criteria that apply to the RGZ.
4. CoGG has failed to do a thorough risk analysis and
failed to take into account the implications of the new zones
on the coastal community of Barwon Heads; there are no
protections agreed. CoGG continually fails to enforce the
few protections that exist, and seems incapable of
implementing the plans it publishes.
5.
Barwon Heads is land locked, flat, low lying, and
surrounded by wetland ecosystems, there are real coastal
inundation concerns. There is poor public transport and
limited services. There is inadequate storm water and
continual flooding. As large blocks are subdivided and
developed more areas of land are covered in concrete and
bitumen generating a significant increase in contaminated
storm water and rainwater which ends in the Barwon River.
We host a significant arterial road. Planning so far has
totally failed to factor in the impacts of the Growth Zones
around us
6. Conclusion: We have chosen to live and work in our
coastal village because it is unique. Along the way CoGG
has determined that we are an Activity Centre and can
therefore absorb the pressures of a RGZ throughout 56
hectares of Barwon Heads. We are the destination of choice
by many new occupants of the neighbouring growth zones.
We are traditionally a holiday destination for families and
campers. There are already considerable pressures from
growth. The implications of the new zones in particular the
RGZ are creating significant tensions in the town and
situations of conflict are developing which are not good for
community welfare and neighbourliness. There are now
over 150 0bjections to the proposed development at 9
Bridge Rd. We will become adversarial and experts at
VCAT.
This is not coastal living.

Development of the scale encouraged by the

RGZ and GRZ will put considerable pressure
on our vulnerable coastal environment. Our
township does not have the infrastructure or
capacity to absorb the scale of development
encouraged by the new zones and we seek an
urgent review.
The Barwon Heads Structure Plan 2010
(is being reviewed now), states:
Barwon Heads is not designated as a growth location and
is in fact situated between two areas which are strategically
supported for further urban development; Ocean Grove and
Armstrong Creek. These two locations have long been

designated to accommodate the future expected growth in

Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, in order that other
smaller coastal towns and sensitive environments can be
protected, however we no longer appear to have the
protections. We will keep you informed of the review
process and urge everyone to inform themselves of the
Structure Plan.

City of Greater Geelong

Oh well, they are gone but the Council goes on
Barwon Heads residents need to think long and hard
about what we want from our local council. Our current rates
are high and just wait until we get the new rate notices for
2016-2017. As our residential sales sky rocket so will our
rates. We are significant investors in the City of Greater
Geelong and we look forward to positive returns.
We strongly believe that CoGG will be a better place with
our residents actively involved, and hope that the changes
now underway will be the perfect opportunity for
participation and discussion. We look forward to working
with the Commissioners.

Planning Application for 9 Bridge Rd.

We understand that there have been over 150
objections. No decision has been made at the time of
writing. This planning application has prompted continued
discussion and is an example of the appalling vision that
developers have for our town. It highlights the risks of the
new Residential Growth Zone. The application is for a
building that is probably bigger than anything in the
commercial zone and will have a significant impact on
the streetscape and neighboring area. It incorporates 3
residential dwellings and 3 shops. This is currently a
site occupied by the old house which old pictures and
locals believe is close to 100 years old. The National
Trust has put in an objection. The history of the house
is amazing, well done Ross Harrison for reviving it.
With so many empty shops in town it seems absurd that
more shops are planned for a residential area.

Removal of Native Vegetation in Barwon Heads

The matter between neighbours in Warrenbeen has been
well documented. There is a strong community expectation
that certain areas are protected and that the Council has a
leading role in protecting Indigenous and old vegetation.
We are surprised that this isn't the case, and appalled that
people have to go to the Supreme Court for remedies.
Pedestrian Safety project Vic Roads have advised that
this project is delayed until June/July, whilst detailed
designs are completed.

Ozone Rd pipe
We are aware through the Barwon Heads Sailing Club and
Barwon Coast that CoGG are preparing to install a new
drainage pipe to replace the existing outfall at the Ozone Rd
jetty. The new pipe will be further away from the jetty. We are
still clarifying information and understand the Sailing Club is
in negotiations with the Council.
The BHA committee understands that there is
considerable concern about the scale and potential
impact of the proposed pipe.

Donations
At the All Saints Op Shop we are always
so mindful that without your constant flow
of donations, our organisation could not
exist.
But twice a year, following Committee Meetings in May
and November, it is our great pleasure to be able to give
back to many community organisations donations to
keep their work going.
We always focus on those run by volunteers, so the two
Fire Brigades, Barwon Heads and Connewarre, two
Surf Life-Saving Clubs, and similar groups always
receive whatever we can give.
Then there are groups such as the Barwon Heads
Refugee Committee, which is desperate to have
money to put towards assisting so many people who
need legal assistance to cope with their plight.
Another really worthy recipient of our money is the Lions
Emergency Food Boxes scheme. Although we do not
see much evidence of hard times in our rather special

Barwon Heads town, there are many people who

suddenly become unemployed, and appeal for help to
tide them over.
There are other groups, one of which, Donations In
Kind, receives quite a large amount from us. The $2,000
they receive twice yearly goes towards the cost of the
shipping containers they need to take the goods they
send to third-world countries.
Thanks to one of our communities local saints, John
Brady, many of the things we receive but cannot sell, are
taken off to be sorted, packed and dispatched, at their
Corio headquarters. Without this, and the help of others
who send-on things we cannot sell to other Op Shops
which do not receive the support we do, we would be
overwhelmed.
I never know whether to be happy or frustrated that I live
so close to the Op Shop. I go past possibly an average of
four times daily, and it is so rare that I do not see a mound
of bags and boxes to be put into the two sorting areas,
that I often mutter a silent prayer of thanks! I am not the
only one who puts things away, by any means, but we
are just overwhelmed by the quantity of stuff.
Without your donations we could not exist, BUT!
Despite all our signs, and the many times I have
probably bored the readers of this column, I cannot
believe that we still get strollers, and boxes of bed-side
lights, sound systems, and many electrical goods which
at this time, we are NOT able to sell. Then there are the
items of furniture, so heavy that it takes several of our
volunteers to heave them over to the central grassy area
to allow us to display other goods. With the rains at last
arriving, that means things may sit out and deteriorate

till, as happened recently, they have to be taken apart

and jammed in a skip. Sadly, we do NOT have room for
larger items of furniture, so you are better off donating
them to Salvos or Vinnies over at Ocean Grove.
At the moment, we have taken out of storage all of our
winter garments that had been put away since summer,
and are now only putting really quality summer clothing
away for later this year.
So, sadly, if you send us a large quantity of summer
clothes, they will most likely be packed straight off to the
organisation called Melbourne Cleaning Cloths,
because our storage area is quite small. So if you think
your summer gear is worth selling, could you please
keep it for the winter months. I look at T-shirts I have
worn for several summers, and if I cant see a use for
them as cleaning cloths, I put them in my household
bin....though ashamed as I know people in third world
countries have so little. Our consumer-led, and basically
well-to-do society has an awful lot to answer for, if you
see what we receive at the Op Shop!
Meanwhile, I give thanks to God that our efforts do allow
us to give to so many worthy people. Its great to get
letters back telling us how our donations have helped to
keep up the good work in organisations like Riding For
The Disabled, or Cottage By The Sea.
Please continue to help by donating so much of the
quality items we are so grateful to receive.
God bless you,
Helen Edwards, Shop Supervisor

Barwon Heads Fine Music Society presents

Pianist Sonoka Miyake

Hi Everyone!
It is somewhat a pleasant relief when a big event, such as the
Supper Dance, held by the BHFMS, is successfully over! Weeks
of planning for costs including the best music, Michael McQuaids
Swing Quintet, advertising, lighting from Huib de Bruin & Liam
from Bellerine Audio, a delicious 3 course supper from
Peppercorn, sponsorship from the Bendigo Bank, support from
Edgars Real Estate & wine from the Barwon Heads Wine Store &
the hire of the Barwon Heads Community Hall which is so suitable
for such an occasion!
Setting up the hall was a great team effort with the committee & friends working in
a harmonious group, setting the tables up around the dance floor with their red
tablecloths, adorned with candles standing on mirrors & surrounded by tiny
lights. Placing the wine glasses on the tables added to the glamour of the table
settings!
In the evening, the coloured lighting created a wonderful ambiance on arrival as
everyone was greeted with a welcoming drink & a choice of delicious canapes
with the music of Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington & George
Gershwin & many other composers, getting everyone in the mood!

Meaning theyve done a poo.

So normal is it for us to discuss
bowel movements in health that
in each patients medical history,
there is an actual record of their
poo. Its documented on
something known as a bowel
chart. Where the number of
movements and the consistency
of their crap is kept right
alongside their blood pressure as
a personal record of their stay.

So, Its not often that you ask someone

when they last opened their bowels.
Whats even more unusual is when you get an answer.
Which - also strangely enough - can be quite elaborate. If
the said bowel movement had been recent, the
information regarding how the movement manifested is
just as integral to the conversation as to when it occurred.
If theres been a clear absence of recent bowel activity,
not only is the duration of absence deemed of interest - so
too are the side effects of having your crap stuck in your
system for longer than that which is deemed medically
acceptable.
In my gig, bowel movements are discussed like the
weather. This is because I work on the wards of large
public hospitals. Wards that are filled with lots of public
people. Public people who are not allowed to be
discharged home until they have opened their bowels at
some stage during their admission stay.

Last week, my bestie had a few

nights in a big public hospital in
Melbourne. She shared her room
with 3 blokes. Apparently the first one used the F bomb as
both an adjective, verb and noun. Making him explode
with expletives every two hours when someone tried to
take his pulse. The second was a vain hipster. Apparently
more concerned with potential facial scars rather than
death risks of his upcoming brain surgery. And lastly, the
poor old guy in the corner closest to the door. The one
who was possibly a little hard of hearing. The one who
was asked quite loudly and quite regularly if he had
opened his bowels yet. And to every time he was asked,
he responded with the same sorry shake of his head.
Until eventually he hadnt done a poo in 3 days.
On the busy wards of the public hospitals, we have ways
of making your bowels move. Because we have ways of
making you poo. And in the shared space of the hospital
public ward - of which my bestie was still admitted to last
week - she bore the consequence of what happens when
your poo is medically induced. This poor chap with his

0416 119240

stuck crap, had three days of hospital food and recycled

ward air medically released into the confined walls of the
small shared bathroom. The bathroom that my bestie was
desperate to use for her own personal hygiene needs. The
bathroom that was now closed to her because after the
fairly public recent medical intervention, she couldnt
enter the confined space without vomiting in her own
mouth.
She asked me incredibly -What normal person does that?
Asks someone if theyve opened their bowels and then
makes them explode into a small shared space?
Well - I do. Its part of a normal working day.
Think standing strength, abdominal twists and mula
bandha.
Sometimes we can question what is normal? We can
think that what we do is the right way and that how we
do it is the only way. That the things that we need to be
doing are done in a way that we believe we know
completely and control fully. We can travel a long time
unconsciously down this blinkered path. Convincing
ourselves that our projected view point of normal is - well
- normal. That everyone sees things as we see them. Or
feels things as we feel them. When, if every so often we
take a step back from what we are doing in our "normal"
- we have an opportunity to interpret ourselves through
the immediacy of the anothers experience. To begin to be
available for what maybe is.
And to see normal through fresh eyes.
I laughed along with my bestie last week. So grateful that
she had been discharged and so happy that she was
home. I told her she now had a window into my world in
the public health system. When really, I was telling her
that I loved her for seeing my normal.
And for making me see me.

Secondly, the baby or 'deciduous' teeth act as
placeholders for the adult teeth, if the baby teeth are lost
early children are more likely to need braces.
Some first teeth can be in children's mouth's
for over ten years, so it is important that they
are healthy and non-painful for this time. The
first adult teeth start coming through at around
the age of five or six, so it is critical to be taking

The government child dental benefits scheme, is closing on the first of July 2016.
This scheme currently covers children age 2-17, who are eligible for Medicare
and families are receiving certain government benefits such as 'Family Tax

good care of these teeth.

Cleaning- it is important to be cleaning your children's

teeth as soon as they come through. You can get extra
soft baby toothbrushes or just use a bit of gauze to wipe
over the teeth.
Children need help with brushing until the age of 8. Below
three years old, only a smear of toothpaste is needed,
over three a pea sized blob of toothpaste is
recommended.
It is a good idea to start bringing your child to the dentist
from the age of two. We can catch any issues early and
also make the experience as simple and positive as
possible so that they are not afraid later on.
When the permanent first molars come through (around
the age of six), we can consider fissure sealing the teeth.
The biting surface's of molars have pits and grooves in the
teeth called 'fissures'. Bacteria, in the form of plaque, can
gather in these grooves and can be difficult to clean out.
This is why these surfaces are prone to decay. The
sealants cover over this rough surface and protect the
tooth from decay. The picture below shows the surface of
a molar before and after sealing the tooth.

We've had a terrific response to the callout to artists

for the Bellarine Arts Trail, which is scheduled for the
Melbourne Cup long weekend (29/30 October). Artists
in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove will open their
studios to visitors on the trail over the two-day event.
The Bellarine Arts Trail creates an opportunity for the public and
artists to interact at studios and various public venues on the
Bellarine Peninsula. This first event will take place in Barwon Head and Ocean Grove, but we
hope to broaden the event to encompass the rest of the Bellarine in future events.
Specific objectives of the Bellarine Arts Trail are:
.
To raise the profile of art and local artists

To provide a platform for artists to exhibit and sell their work

To promote and encourage creativity

To strengthen connections professionally, artistically and personally

To attract visitors to the Bellarine Peninsula and encourage those living within the
Bellarine to explore their local areas

To provide a way to encourage and strengthen the arts and wider community
within the Bellarine Peninsula.
The Barwon Heads Arts Council is very thrilled to be bringing this exciting new event to the
region. For further information please contact the project coordinator Karen Shirley on
0437 032 647 or via email at barwonheadsartscouncil@live.com.

Jesse Diggins
Its a freezing cold Sunday morning when I head to the Starfish to meet
Jesse Diggins.
We opt to sit outside in the sun and over a steaming cappuccino, Jesse tells me about his career as a
youth worker leading to him recently receiving recognition in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards.
500 people were nominated and 30 were recognised, Jesse in the category: Career Kickstarter,
Community Services Social Impact and I quote from http://www.awardsaustralia.com/young-achieverawards/vic
The Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award celebrates young people who
make a significant contribution through community service or social justice initiatives. The award

They offer hope, education, care and support to those in their care. Whether it be for service provision,
Those in need, cultural and community support, health and well being, emergency services, academia or education,
they make a difference. These young people are not only at the forefront of caring and accomplishment, but are contributing to the community by achieving their goals
through hard work and perseverance and they are wonderful role models for us all.
Born in Barwon Heads 23 years ago to Linda and Dave Diggins, Jesse and his sister had a carefree and happy life surrounded by art, music, clean air and coastal life.
He smiles as he remembers jetty jumping (whoops) and swimming at whim. He also fondly remembers working at the Bakery starting at 4am making vanilla slices and later
at The Heads in hospitality. Another much loved memory is kicking the footy with dad in the street (Grandview Pde.) and sneaking down to par 3 at the golf club to hit a few.
Nina and Laurie, Jesses grandparents lived next door (the white house in Hitchcock Ave. with the beautiful Secret Garden) and he and Nina would spend hours watching
the cricket together.
At Deakin university, Jesse completed his BA in Psychology and went on to honors, his thesis,
Family Violence and Association with Alcohol. He is currently doing his Masters in Educational
and Developmental Psychology to be completed in about eight months. (Im finding it hard to
remember that this gentle, thoughtful young man is only 23!)
Jesse works with homeless youth, almost all from broken homes. Often, its a classic case where
theres been a step-parent who doesnt get along with the teen and an ultimatum is given. The
teens find themselves out in the world without life skills or money.
Thats where youth workers like Jesse become involved. Guiding them toward shelter, finishing
their education, learning social skills and most importantly keeping them safe.
Hes a big brother to many young people and keeps in touch with some of the ones whove moved
forward in life. We chat about the, often broken, young people he works with and the importance of
gaining their trust.
Fortunately, there are many successes.

With proud mum, Linda

Jesse recently became engaged to occupational therapist Holly who grew up in Anglesea and they
celebrated with friends & family at the Secret Garden. They eventually plan to settle and build close
to his parents in Barwon Heads. Family is very important to Jesse and Holly.

BARWON HEADS SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

As well as to the links to many other organisations within
Barwon Heads, the Sustainability Group maintains
contact with a range of organisations outside, with
current linkages including:
In association with the Geelong Sustainability Group
and Surf Coast Energy Group we have met regularly
with Minister Lisa Neville, our local member who was
(until right on copy deadline) also the state Minister for
Environment, Climate Change and Water. Our focus
has been on the government's approach to climate
change actions, particularly in following-up the recent
review of the Climate Change Act. We are also pursuing
the prospects for a container deposit scheme and bans
on plastic bags, as have been introduced in other states
and territories.
We recently participated in a CoGG Future Proofing

formally adopted by the City of Greater Geelong. We
have been discussing with the Environment
Department how our Community Actions for a
Sustainable Barwon Heads project can be reflected
within this principles structure.

How Billy's Bill came about

Billy's Bill is a community initiative to provide

families with the help they need to give their
children the gift of sport.
Extra-curricular sports grants/sponsorship
will be provided for recreational and
competitive sports.
This project is in partnership with Barwon
Child, Youth & Family who will identify
families in need of this support and manage
the child's sponsorship and transition into
the sporting club.
For more info go to
www.theempowermovementaustralia.com

Terindah

We were sharing with our son "Billy" the importance of community, ways in which we could
support others, and what this might look like. Billy began to think about all of the
opportunities he has himself and identified that some children might not have access to
these same opportunities. Billy loves playing sport and it is an important part of his weekly
activities. He has felt the support, made friendships that a sporting environment gives, and
shared with us that it "would be cool" if other children had access to play
competition/recreational sport. He asked why cant we help pay the fees so kids can play
competition sport, I play sport and I see some kids on the side lines watching, it doesnt
seem fair just because their mum and dad cant afford it, they miss out

And so the concept for a community project was born - giving children access to being
involved in a team environment, feeling the support of community, the friends made, the
self-confidence, belief in themselves, and a chance to display their skills (and learn new
ones). Who knows there could be the next gold medallist that may have never been given
an opportunity.

Participants can enjoy all

the dishes prepared on the

After a meeting with Barwon Child, Family & Youth to share our vision, they extended their
branch to incorporate a structure within their program, to help families by offering a
'sponsorship' in recreation or competition sport.
To create such opportunities requires funding! These funds will be raised by fundraising and
donations, and in the future from the sale of second hand sporting goods. For now, direct
donations to Barwon Child, Youth & Family will be our main source of income to support the
families/children.

How you can become involved

Our fundraising effort starts now. Support from (for example) our local community, sporting
clubs, businesses, individuals and families is what is needed to kick-start this project. All
funds raised will go directly to the Billy's Bill project and are tax deductible.
We are starting this with a fundraising goal of $6,000 so that we can start reaching the
children. We kindly ask for your support, contributions of any size are welcome. To donate
please make sure you read the instructions on our website to ensure that the funds are
specifically allocated for the Billy's Bill project.
Over the coming months we will continue to provide updates on fundraising efforts as well
as updates on the children that you are supporting.

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
HELP NEEDED TO
CONTROL 28,800 STICKY
FINGERS
Yes, that's right - The Lobster Pot
might look like a sleepy green shed in
the At The Heads carpark, but over the
summer just gone, dedicated,
enthusiastic and sometimes
exhausted volunteers guarded
precious touch-tank critters from the
prodding fingers of 3,600 visitors
(28,800 fingers and 7,200 thumbs to
be precise).
The Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre (to use
its official title) is crammed full of cultural
artefacts (aboriginal, ship-wreck and early
town history) and natural history (fossils, birds,
plants and animals) all there to educate and
entertain locals and visitors alike. Then there
are those treasured little fish, urchins, crabs,
snails and sea-stars that need a bit of
protecting from fingers and thumbs.
So if running after a pesky golf ball is
becoming a bit boring and the thought of
squeezing into that clammy wetsuit is totally
tedious then why not lend us a hand not only
are you guaranteed to learn something new,
but you'll probably make a friend or three
along the way.
To connect with the adventures of The
Lobster Pot drop into the Barwon Coast
office or call Maddie Glynne (5254 1118).

Winter is the time of year when hooded

plovers abandon their territorial ways and
become social with each other;
congregating with both sub-adult and adult
hooded plovers at flocking sites along the
coast. Younger hooded plovers usually
disperse from their natal beaches to find
their place in the world and hopefully their
mate.
This explains why you will often see flocks
of around a dozen or more hooded plovers
on our local beaches at this time.
Locally, Lake Murtnaghurt (behind the 13th Beach Surf
Life Saving Club) is an important flocking / pair-bonding
site for hooded plovers.
Recently, members of the Geelong Field Naturalists Club
were at Murtnaghurt and observed a flock of 12 adult and
3 juvenile hooded plovers with BL being one of the
banded adults present.
(BL was banded as an adult at Black Rock in 2012 and is
yet to find territory and a partner) (Photo by Chrissy
Freestone)
At Collendina there has also been a flock of up to 15
hooded plovers present, consisting mostly of local
hoodies.
Lake Victoria, Point Lonsdale is another well known local
flocking site.
Local photographer Bec Stephens was out and about at
42W, 13th Beach recently and observed PC & EH with
their now 6 month old chick in the company of PC's former
partner AY.
She was able to take a few great photos, see pic.
It's really great to see the 42W chick going strong and
developing its adult plumage. Thanks Bec!
If you are lucky enough to spot a flagged hoodie and read
its flag, please report your sighting via email to:
hooded.plover@birdlife.org.au or phone 03 9347 0757
and ask to speak to a staff member on the beach-nesting
birds program.

plover monitoring: http://mybeachbird.com.au/ or

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Barwon Coast is a Committee of
Management appointed by the State
Government with responsibility for
the management of 13km of coastal
crown land from 7W Collendina to
42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads
a n d
1 3 t h B e a c h .
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.

OUR ENVIRONMENT:
BARWON ESTUARY PROJECT
The Barwon Estuary Project is an initiative of the
Barwon Heads Sustainability Group (BHSG), a subgroup of the Barwon Heads Community Arts Garden
Inc. BHSG conducts projects to enhance the local
environment and its sustainability.
This local community project aims to increase
knowledge and appreciation of the biodiversity and
fragility of the Barwon Estuary. The project team is
calling for participants to record estuary observations
online or in a diary, attend workshops, guided walks and
expert talks, and contribute to a community publication.
As residents and visitors develop a communal
understanding of the estuary and become more skilled
in sharing their learning and observations via a range of
communication strategies, the community will be more
motivated and able to collaboratively initiate practical
and innovative conservation activities using the
infrastructure and experience of existing groups such as
Barwon Estuary Watch, Barwon Coast and Barwon

BALLOONS
Again recently we experienced a cluster of balloons in
the atmosphere that descended upon the middle of

Photo: Martin Griffiths

the lower sections of the Barwon estuary. Balloons both
on the land and in our waterways cause significant harm
to wildlife and fish as well as water quality. Balloons are
best kept indoors out of harms way. From time to time
people release balloons to raise funds, to create
awareness of a cause, or to remember a loved on. But
there are alternatives such as bubble wands, flying kites,
flags or streamers, placement of colourful pinwheels,
seaweed wreaths, or have a night even using coloured
solar lights. To learn more on the impacts of balloons
visit: www. BalloonsBlow.org.

DOG ON BEACHES
Once again we are experiencing incidents from dogs
interacting with our wildlife. This week we saw a Ring-tail
Possum be chased from its habitat into the Barwon
estuary to escape being potentially killed by a dog. We
have dog control orders in place to not only protect the
community but our precious wildlife. Please note our dog
control orders allowing dogs off-leash along sections of
our coastline do not come into effect until 1st May. We are
experiencing a high number of dog walkers not
complying with the regulations. Also note the Barwon
Bluff Marine Sanctuary is a NO DOG ZONE all year
round.

OCEAN GROVE SURF BEACH COMPLEX

Barwon Coast continue to work with the Ocean Grove
Surf Life Saving Club to finalise the plans for the
redevelopment of the building. The redevelopment of the
SLSC And The Dunes caf is considered a high priority
project and all efforts are being made to finalise the
redevelopment plans as soon as is possible; when
finalised redevelopment timelines will be established so
that work can begin at the earliest opportunity for all
concerned.

CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS

BARWON HEADS

31W

Barwon Coast is continuing to work on options for access

from the 'Cylinders' car park down to 13th Beach. The site
of the old staircase, lost late last year, is still active and
presents almost insurmountable problems for rebuilding on the same site. All other options are being
investigated including funding possibilities for those
options. Barwon Coast knows it is a popular site and
have received input from stakeholder groups supporting
a replacement access in some form.
We will continue to work toward the best outcome
possible and to also keep the community updated as
planning progresses.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

From bells to whistles and beyond
The evolution of our equipment and fire trucks is not the only
area to have changed significantly since our Brigade was
first formed. The way we receive information from VicFire
when we respond to a call is very different to 1936, and even
ten years ago.
In the early days, volunteers were alerted to a fire by the
ringing of a bell located next to the Fire Station. The first
reported fire call attended to by the Barwon Heads Fire
Brigade was on Thursday 15 July 1937. The alarm was
raised at 3.05am and firefighters arrived on scene at 3.10am
to a fire that had started in a bedroom of a weatherboard
house. A fire reporting system was installed in the late 1960's with two telephones, one at Marchant's Bins Milk Bar and the other at Phil's Milk Bar, both in Hitchcock
Avenue.
In later years the bell was replaced by an alert siren that was sounded to get the attention of the volunteers and could be heard across the township.
These days we are alerted to fires and incidents through a pager system and an app on our phones. Both have a distinctive alarm and provide a succinct message of the type
of incident so by the time we get to the station we have an idea of the situation. Today, we are required to turn out from the station within six minutes of the alarm being raised.
Just last year, thanks to local community support, we were fortunate to install an alert communications system that verbally repeats the details of the call out, prints the
directions on how to get there, and shows local weather conditions. This has further improved our ability to get to the incident as quickly and safely as possible, and be
prepared for whatever we may face.
On the weekend of 21 and 22 May we assisted a local resident burn large vegetation piles on their property. This afforded an opportunity for members to practice their
firefighting skills and we were supported by the Connewarre Fire Brigade. A big thanks to Captain Helen Wood, Matt and Clive from Barwon Heads Fire Brigade, and also 1st
Lieutenant Leigh Wicks, Julie and Matt from Connewarre.
We have a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and give us a like to follow what
we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a team that contributes to the
safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email Secretary Kira Crawford Brooks on cap.bhufb@bigpond.com

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

The B2B ride from Sydney to Barwon Heads
has long gone, but the thoughts and memories
remain.
We ended up raising about $23,000 all up
which we are all very proud of. Life has almost
returned to normal, except that there are still
many longer weekend rides being organised.
It has been heard that many of the crew don't
want to lose the fitness that they worked so
hard to attain.

Hitchcock. The high continued for those of us travelling by

mini-bus as we bagged our 3 compatriots who'd decided
at the last minute to fly to Sydney. Our extraordinary sense
of humour and cleverness around this activity was ably
assisted by Wayne-o back at BHCC HQ.
Another highlight on the bus trip was the passing of

B2B Thoughts and Comments from the

President
For me, the long leadtime for the Bridge 2
Bridge provided the
necessary motivation to
cycle often, and over
ever-increasing
distances, in order to
become fit enough to
complete the whole ride.
Having committed to the
ride, and having passed
on the opportunity to
attend a wedding in
Florida, I didn't wish to
be the first to seek
refuge in the Support Vehicle.
The level of anticipation grew to such an extent in the
weeks leading up to B2B that many of us just wanted it to
start! Having said that, one of the highlights was the
send-off by supporters in morning darkness on

descents that resulted were pretty exciting and being

able to cruise down those as a group was very special
indeed.
With such a diverse group of riders tackling a huge
physical and mental challenge it was fantastic that we
all encouraged each other and were able to laugh and
cry with each other over the entire duration.
Special thanks must go to Dr Michael Sheridan who,
not only hatched the plan, but also set the scene at The
Rocks on the eve of the ride with his Ernest Shackleton
speech. Very inspiring, with an emphasis on getting
everyone home safely to their families.

comedian Ronnie Corbett, as a quick Google search for

some of his fabulous one-liners left us in stiches for around
250 kms. I was laughing so much the others didn't get to
actually hear the jokes until I had time to control myself.
Having two of James's mates to escort us through the
streets (and traffic lights) of Sydney and through the Royal
National Park to Scarborough was a real bonus, made all
the more apparent when soon after we continued on our
own we got horribly lost and ended up on a coastal cycle
path. Not to mention the other time Mikey took us on a
meander, only to have to face a hill with a gradient a couple
of us had to walk up. As horrible as some of the very steep
ascents were, where you were just making 4 kph or so, the

We would love somewhere local where we can access
it easily. If you have any thoughts or ideas, please

That's all our cycling news for this month. Keep riding
and stay warm and visible on the bike. Please
remember to wear a helmet ALWAYS. Even for a short
journey to the shops or around the corner to a friend's

BARWON HEADS GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM

Coached by Peter La Fontaine (he of the famous AFL La Fontaines) and
managed by Kim Hogue (town champion at woo hoos), how could these 26 young
footballers be anything other than inspired, enthusiastic and filled with joyful spirit?
So far, they have played 5 games and won 3... Although most play other sports, this is their first time playing footy.
Looking forward to following your progress girls and well done to all of the parent helpers who are on board,
supporting their daughters and the team as a whole.
Very exciting times ahead and if the smiles on faces are anything to go by, so far so good.

BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL/NETBALL CLUB

Last time I wrote we were
travelling to Queenscliff to
challenge this seasons
benchmark, with a few of the
older heads out through injury
making way for the elevation of
some younger players, BJ
Michell, Braeden Eddy, Kyle
Polley, Tim Ollis and Daniel
Hovey returned to Senior
football.
Our boys missed opportunities early, kicking 4 points in
the first quarter. The theme followed throughout the day
with Queenscliff winners by 36 points.

Round 6 saw " the Battle of the Bridge " hosted at

home, with our boys eager to improve from the last
weeks efforts.
The first quarter saw the Grubbers lead by 2 points in a
scrappy start with plenty of ball turn over. The next two
quarters saw the home side sneak their heads in front,
going into the last quarter with a 2 goal lead. The final
quarter saw the headers opened things up and start to
score freely, ending in a 46 win, 7 goal haul to Chris
"Ricky" Martin and bragging rights to the "Piss Pot" for
the first round.
Round 7 again at home, had Modewarre come to us as a
proven "hoodoo" side, with the two sides winning 5
games each in the last 5 seasons. Injury affecting the
playing groups number, allowed the elevation of U18
player Zac Walte his first hit out with the seniors.
Modewarre led at every change and our boys seemed
powerless to counteract their run and carry, with the
visitors winning by 43 points at the final siren.
Round 8 we travelled to Queens Park to play Ammos.
With their return to almost a full complement of players,
we knew this wasn't going to be an easy task. Another
U18 received a call up to senior selection, Will Ford will
play along side Zac Walter in what appeared to be
valuable experience for these boys. Unfortunately
Ammos were too good throughout the entire game, but
credit to our boys who never stopped competing and
came home with a late charge. Ammos by 67 points.
This week saw a much needed rest for our boys with the
only game held being the Bellarine interleague match
against Heathcote at the Ocean Grove reserve. Barwon
Heads representative Chris "Ricky" Martin, John "J
Rod" Read and Cam "Wolf" O'Leary in the Senior side
and the U18 comp seen Zac Walter, Will Ford and
Darcy Hewitt play. Both side had convincing wins, well
done to all the boys involved.
This week we are back facing off with Anglesea at home.
Taking nothing for granted this game will be crucial for
both side as the season is shaping up for a cracker
finish.

See you all at the footy - Go Heads

THERES NO HIDING NOW.

In the eight rounds prior to the
interleague break, Barwon Heads
got to size up most opposition
sides in the BFNL competition. And
they got to have a good look at us,
too.
Thankfully, the news is positive and the
Seagulls have been ultra competitive
in most grades.
Our emerging 19 and unders had a
fantastic run before the bye round,
sitting comfortably in third position on
the ladder.
Under the clever guidance of Kate and Under 19s and Under 11s playing "elimination"
Darcy, the team notched six wins - five at training recently
of which were secured in succession.
The girls - Sofie, Eliza, Courtney,
Molly, Keely, Chelsea, Georgia, Maddie, Greta and Hannah - have been working hard at training, which is paying
off on game day as they improve each week. A big thanks to team manager Terri who keeps everything in order.
Meanwhile in seniors, A grade trumped Ocean Grove by eight goals in the marquee Battle of the Bridge in round six
but then succumbed to competition heavyweights Modewarre and Geelong Amateur.
Heading into the interleague break, the Seagulls were sixth on the ladder with three wins and five losses.
After eight rounds, B grade had an even four wins and four losses. Coaches Sharon and Olivia must be encouraged
by the promise of this hard-working outfit.
C grade is strengthening, spurred on by a string of four wins in its five games before the break, including a seasonchanging demonstration of teamwork against Modewarre.
D Grades dream start of five wins was interrupted with three losses against top sides. Unflustered, coach Bec is still
positive and working on combinations.
In juniors, the powerful 17 and under 1 were 6-2 by the break. But the two losses to the top sides were by four goals or
less. 17 and under 2 was unbeaten after eight rounds and is enjoying the luxury of talented options across the court.
15 and under 1 had four wind and four losses, while the 15 and under 2 had two wins, three losses and a draw from its
brilliant tussle against higher-ranked Geelong Amateur.
The 13 and unders, section 1 had six wins and section 2
four. Younger Seagulls are also playing in under 11
competitions in Geelong and Ocean Grove, guided by
Cath, Kate and Mel and Dani.
The girls, who train on Thursday afternoons, are rapidly
improving each game and impressing coaches and

spectators with their skill.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

There isn't an easy way to say
this, but if the cricket year, as opposed to
the season, was a roller coaster then
we're at the bottom of the climb.
The cable is straining to pull us against
gravity to get us to a point where we can be released and
allowed to go on the ride that is a competitive cricket
season. As a consequence there is not a lot happening
on the cricket front at the moment. The clicking and
clacking of the mechanics of the ride are still ticking over
though and the next milestone in the climb is the AGM
which is effectively the top of the first climb.
Once we have negotiated our way through
the selection of a new executive and a new committee
then the leavers can be pulled to propel the club into the
business part of the ride there all the fun and the glory
and disaster have the chance to exist.
With President Russell Hyland stepping
down, there will be a definite change in the executive
and this creates a very positive chance for new blood to

come into the senior leadership of the club. There is a

definite candidate for the position at this stage, but we are
more than happy to have any interested person step
forward to take on the president's job. Russell has done
and enormous job as president over a number of years
and has lead the club to a position where we have more
members and a great community feel. The club's
gratitude for his long service, not only as president, was
shown at the presentation night this year when he was
awarded a life membership.

The AGM will be held on Friday the 15th

of July at the Barwon Grove Golf Club AKA the
Tin Shed. All members are invited and indeed
expected to attend.
There are some very fine candidates who
have shown a great deal of interest in joining the
committee for the upcoming season and we could use
some more. If you're keen to help the best little club in the
district to continue be great then come along to the AGM
and get on board.
See you there.

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB

Rep Basketball
Quite a few children who play for Barwon
Heads Seagulls have been selected to play
representative basketball for Bellarine Storm.
What does this mean?

According to their website, "The Bellarine

Storm program is a pathway for talented
players in the Bellarine Peninsula Basketball
Association.

The Representative Program is dedicated to promoting,

developing and competing at the highest level of
basketball in Victoria. It is the goal of the program to
enable each player to reach his or her maximum
potential with regard to basketball knowledge, skills and
experience whilst encouraging the qualities of
teamwork, respect, discipline, fair play and hard work."
The Bellarine Storm teams compete in the Victorian
Junior Basketball Association (VJBL), playing Friday
nights against other competing associations and yes,
sometimes you can travel as far as Mornington,
Craigieburn or Eltham but 50% of the games will be at
home in Drysdale, and if you are lucky a few in Geelong
and surrounds. Teams will also compete in various
country and metro tournaments. As a parent this means
a LOT of driving around for training sessions and games
(carpool if you can!). There are so many benefits though
that make the travel worth it. The parents get to meet

other like minded families outside of Barwon Heads, and

our children get ample exercise whilst learning many life
skills as mentioned in the goals above. The sense of
pride they have in wearing the uniform and representing
the club is also brilliant to see, and in my experience the
rep program has helped build resilience, confidence and
social skills.
If you think your child may be interested in trying out for
Bellarine Storm I would recommend liking their Facebook
page "Bellarine Storm Basketball" or keeping an eye on
the Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association Inc
website as they will advertise the team selection tryout
dates which are usually in September. The rep season
starts with grading games in November and finishes with
finals in September the following year. It is a long season
but when you do get the odd Friday night without
basketball those glasses of wine go down very well
indeed!

On a local note, our Mens Grey team are looking for

new basketball players to play on Wednesday
night.
Please email seagullsbasketballclub@gmail.com if
you are interested in joining a fabulous, yet slightly
injury prone, group of blokes.

BARWON HEADS
TENNIS CLUB
It is never too late to get into tennis! While I started
playing at the age of 8 when my parents gave me a
tennis racquet for Christmas, tennis is a lifelong sport
that can be enjoyed by people of almost any age. It's
also something you never forget once you learn.
Samantha Stosur

JUNIORS
We're 5 weeks into our winter tennis season and we
have 4 junior teams playing competition, with 2 girls and
2 boys teams, and it's great to see a number of those that
began their tennis journey last summer pick up their
racquets again for winter comp. All teams have enjoyed
some wins, with a couple3 of the teams looking like they
may be dominant forces in their respective sections. For
anyone with kids considering playing tennis over
summer, now is the time to start thinking about lessons
especially for third term (contact Essential Tennis Ph
52456603) or pop down on a Saturday morning and
check out the competition. A grading day will be held for
all juniors in late August.

SENIOR
Winter senior competition is represented by 2 teams:
mixed in section 3 and a men's team in section 9. Early in
the season has seen the mixed have some promising
wins and sitting 4th on the ladder. The young mens
brigade in section 9 have done well with 2 convincing
wins and are in a strong position at third on the ladder.

MIDWEEK
It's finals time for midweek ladies. On Tuesday 31st May
four of the six midweek teams will be gearing up to play
in the preliminary finals! Hoping for a great outcome and
and four premiership wins on grandfinal day, 7th June.
Sections 6,8,9 and 10 are the competing teams best of
luck ladies! A big end of season celebration is planned
for Grand Final night 7th June at the BHP.
A new season of winter midweek will commence in July.
It is likely that we will have 5 teams, but due to our
midweek ladies tendency to fly north during the winter
months we are always in need of new players
permanent and emergency. The spirit of midweek ladies
tennis is fabulous and we are fortunate to have such a
great network of players. Big thanks to team captains for
the organization of your teams during the season. A
huge thank you to Maz McIntosh who does a fantastic
job as midweek ladies representative. Contact Maz on
0409405044 for all midweek enquiries.

COMMITTEE AND AGM

All members are encouraged to attend the ANNUAL
GENERAL MEETING 10th AUGUST at 7 pm. As with
all community sporting clubs in this town we are
fortunate to have a hard working committee, and we
would welcome anyone who would like to contribute
by becoming an office bearer or general committee
member. To find out more about how you can help
your local tennis club contact us via the BHTC website
or come along to our next meeting on 15th June.

My Next Life
By Woody Allen

In my next life I want to live my life

backwards. You start out dead and get that
out of the way. Then you wake up in an old
people's home feeling better every day.
You get kicked out for being too healthy, go
collect your pension, and then when you
start work, you get a gold watch and a party
on your first day.
You work for 40 years until you're young
enough to enjoy your retirement. You party,
drink alcohol, and are generally
promiscuous, then you are ready for high
school.
You then go to primary school, you become
a kid, you play.
You have no responsibilities, you become a
baby until you are born. And then you spend
your last 9 months floating in luxurious spalike conditions with central heating and room
service on tap, larger quarters every day
and then Voila!
You finish off as an orgasm!
