SUMMARY
A. Introduction
The research article talks about how educational campaigns and smoking bans
affect the smokers intention to smoke. It also emphasized on the relationship of
the major characteristics of the smoker that might affect the effectiveness of the
educational campaigns and smoking bans. The purpose of this study was to
identify the predisposing factors that will affect the smokers ability to quit
smoking, so that the manner by which the educational campaigns and smoking
bans will be carried out will be effective.
B. Procedures:
The research was conducted in 17 cities in Anuhi Province, China. Most of the
subjects to this research were smokers at the age of 15- 70 where 16,616 people
participated. The research study was conducted from October 2010 to January
2011. First they were group to urban and rural origin second was that they
grouped blocks from urban areas and third they grouped villages in rural areas.
Interview with a standard questionnaire was conducted to each participant of the
research. They measured the participants who claimed that the educational
campaigns and smoking bans had positive effects on them and had remained
consistent.

C. Findings
The researchers found out that the effects of educational campaigns and
smoking bans towards the intention of smokers to quit were that, females, people
from urban areas, those with higher education and those who smoke 1-10
cigarettes per day all had significantly higher intentions to quit smoking. Half of
the survey respondents thought that educational campaigns had positive effects
on themselves and that those smokers affected by the Tobacco Control Policies
increases their intentions to quit smoking. These data can be used to enhance
the capability of the identified characteristics of individual towards the
effectiveness of the Tobacco Control Program, and those who had low probability
to quit smoking those major characteristics identified earlier will serve as a basis
for adjusting the said program so that it will be more suitable and effective for
them.

D. Conclusion

All in all the researchers were able to conclude that individual-level factor or the
major characteristics of people served as a very important factor towards the
smokers ability to quit smoking. It is the responsibility of the program makers to
adjust towards the manner by the programs will be carried out; this is to
accommodate the true essence of each program to the different groups of people
that have different understanding towards matters such as smoking. The
government must also be able to distribute these programs equally in urban and
rural areas therefore not having it confined in urban areas only to properly inform
individuals.

PERSONAL REACTION

Although the research was confined in China I do believe that it could be done here in the
Philippines also. The research stated that the best way for educational campaigns to be
more effective was through the integration of media but the that would be too expensive for
the Philippines even more so that the Phl. Government does not set education as the top
priority. The Philippines also has its own policies when it comes to smoking like the R.A.
9211 which talks about the regulation of the packaging, use, sale, distribution, and
advertisement of tobacco products. I think that further compliance and implementation of the
law might be helpful and further teaching of this might guide people towards their
awareness.
As a future nurses I really believe in the power of disease prevention and one of the ways to
prevent disease is through education. The research emphasized on educational campaigns
and smoking bans, both of which would be very helpful for people to see the benefits of not
smoking and reshaping peoples minds to the thought that smoking is socially acceptable
and normal in society.
What nurses and future nurses can do is to do the best of their abilities to teach people of
ways on how to prevent disease. What I liked most of this research is that towards the end
of the research, in its conclusion, it emphasized the need for policy- makers to consider the
individual-level factors in administering this educational campaigns on tobacco control, this
is to ensure that the programs would be effective for all, since major characteristics of
people serve as a big factor towards their understanding and perception of things. This
helps to enhance the strengths of each individual.
