PARISH OFFICE CLOSED

In this season of graduations and ordinations, we are naturally focused on careers and vocations.
Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg rejoices with the family of Fr. Gabriel Greer, who was recently
ordained in Wichita by Bishop Kemme. He now becomes Another Christ with a sharing in His
Divine powers of the Eternal Priesthood. All who know Fr. Gabe wish him the highest holiness and
happiness of life in the Priesthood of Christ. He celebrated his First Mass of Thanksgiving to an
overflowing crowd in his home parish of Lourdes last weekend. For the first time, his priestly hands
raised aloft the Body and Blood of Christ consecrated by his own New powers of the Priesthood.
This was his day of glory after many long years of study and training. Fr. Gabe graduated from St.
Marys-Colgan in 2008. Bishop Kemme has placed him at the Church of the Magdalen in Wichita
where he will begin his priesthood. Fr. Gabes younger brother, Derek, whom I taught while at
St.Marys-Colgan, has indicated a strong interest in a similar vocation and has had some seminary
training. Fr. Gabe said that Derek is on track, God willing, to be ordained in three years.
This is a good time to mention that St. Josephs parish at Arma produced a priest in the person
of Fr. Joseph Gorentz. He and I were in the same class in Arma schools from kindergarten through
high school, graduating in 1953. We then commuted to PSU together for three years. He left for the
seminary in our college senior year; however, I wasnt surprised because he spoke of a vocation off
and on beginning in high school. He came from a family of devout Catholics and he took his
religion seriously, to the point of nudging me many times during our years together that I should
join the Church. After nearly ten years of preparation for his lifetime vocation, my dear friend, Joe
Gorentz, became Fr. Joseph Gorentz on a Saturday in late March of 1966. The next day, Palm
Sunday, he returned to his home parish, St. Josephs, to offer his First Mass of Thanksgiving. What
a joyous occasion it was! After a short stint at Holy Name in Coffeyville, he was assigned as assistant
pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg about 1968. From there, he went to the Newman
Center on the campus of Pittsburg State. Therefore, being near his hometown, we saw a lot of him
in those years before he was moved to Wichita. Often, he would substitute at St. Josephs when our
pastor had to be away. Several times, I was lector for his masses and I recall looking up at him as he
performed his special calling and Id think of those earlier years when we were in high school and
the amusing times we had. Oh, he never let up on me with the Catholic thing; each time he came
home from seminary before and after Helen and I were married in 1962, the conversation would
drift to what had I decided to do about my relationship to God. When our first child was born, Fr.
Joe was there, holding and playing with him. He insisted on our meeting the Arma pastor in 1964,
Fr. John Reinkemeyer. He set up the meeting for us and for my brother, Richard, and his wife,
Nancy. After that first meeting with Fr. John, the die was cast! We were all baptized on Dec. 24, the
night of the First Mass in our present church. He wasnt going to rest until that happened and it
was the most incredible event of our lives and we have Fr. Joe to thank for introducing us to Fr.
John. This is only one instance of Fr. Joes pursuit of souls. Our incoming priest, Fr. Floyd
McKinney, would become another. Fr. Joe worked tirelessly for 13 years evangelizing, but cancer
took him in early 1979. I knew of his potential and I often think of what more he would have
accomplished.
