1. Setting the torque wrench:

1.1

Fig. 1 shows a torque wrench with setting insert.

1.2

Setting to the prescribed torque loading has to be done with the attached setting key 4 after having
removed plug screw 2 from end of handle 3. Setting will be found correct if the movable scale mark is in
line with the desired scale mark on the fixed scale.
Calibration refer to 4.

2. Assembly instructions:
2.1

Threads of screw and nuts as well as contact surfaces must be clean. Damaged necked-down bolts (antifatique bolts) - damage by notching, corrosion etc. must not be used again. In case of piston seizing or
bearing troubles, new necked-down bolts must be used, except for the case, that existing testing facilities
confirm perfect condition of screws/bolt.

2.2

Lubricate threads and engaging surfaces with fresh engine oil.

2.3

When tightening, hold torque spanner at milled grip with one hand only, in a way, so that a right hander
with its forefinger and a left hander with its small finger slightly touches the grip ring (the grip length
doesnt matter!). Pull (dont push!) always with constant speed and force (not jerky) keepling a right angle
to the spanner. Stop tightening immediately upon releasing.

2.4

Tightening of parts placed overhead of gaskets: Screws should not be turned by more than 60 to 90 in
one turns. After all the screws concerned are turned by the same angle, repeat this procedure until the
wrench releases. If tightening is carried out correctly, the respective opposite bolt or screw should make
the torque wrench release at the same angle.
If a greater angle should be found necessary on the second screw, this proves that tightening had not
been carried out in a symmetric manner and, therefore, the first screw has to be slackened an adquate
amount until the releasing clicks of the torque wrench come all up at the same angle.
Tightening shall always be carried out crosswise with frequent change from screw to screw.

2.5

Tightening of parts without gaskets: Tightening in several sequences and in short and hard strokes (with
a light alloy or platic mallet) on screw head or workpiece. Then retighten. If retightening is possible, the
procedure (with the mallet) must be repeated.

2.6

Note that it is still possible to continue tightening after the torque wrench has clicked over. Therefore stop
tightening immediately when the torque wrench clicks over.

2.7

Attention! Components connected through a locking element (annular spring-locking element) must not
be treated as described in item 2.5 after being tightened with a torque wrench. If a mallet stroke is applied
to the thrust piece which transmits the initial stress of the screws onto the locking rings, friction of the
element will be overcome and displaced. Such stroke would put additional load onto the component
which is not calculated and not permissible. Concerning the procedure as mentioned in item 2.5
(repeated) retightening could lead to a so-called cold welding of parts and elements which would make
later loosening impossible.

3. Slackening of necked-down bolt (anti-fatique bolts):

Bolts being in opposition to each other should be slackened alterntatively in several sequences. Never
loosen the one bolt fully before loosening the other one. If more than two bolts are involved, loosen in
criss-cross pattern in several sequences (step by step).
When slackening in this manner, screw seizing may be prevented. First slaken in steps of 1/4 turn only
until the tightening torque is eliminated and the screws, bolts or nuts may be easily removed.
3.1

For particular observation:

Reduced shaft screws must never be opened when on operating temperature.
In case of necessity of fast unmounting works to be carried out after engine shut-down, so immediately all
the crankcase cover have to be opened for a quicker engine cool-down. Only after the reduced shaft
screws to be untightened, in particular the cylinder head bolts, have cooled down so far that they can be
touched continously (below 40 [104 F] to 45 C [113 F]), the reduced shaft screws may be opened.

4. Calibration of torque spanners:

The torque wrench is to be calibrated every year in cases of doubt a calibration is to be carried out earlier.
4.1

Procedure:
Put torque spanner into special calibrating balance and operate exactly as described under chapter 2.3.

4.2

Calibrating points:
for torque spanners with fixed settings at the respective setting point.
Firmly adjusted spanners are povided with a metal sleeve on which it is written Firm adjustment XYZ.
These spanners - independent from their reading on the scale - shall not be modified in their setting.
for torque spanners which are used with different setting points, calibrating to be carried out alltogether
threetimes at lowest
at medium
at maximum scale value.

4.3

Accuracy of calibration:
for torque spanners with fixed setting points the release point, deviating from the spanners scale, may
be corrected to the required NOMINAL according to attached label (tolerance of reproducibility +/- 6 %).
for torque spanners to be used with different setting points, the release torque indicated on the
calibrating device shall not deviate more then +/- 6 % from the scale value at the three precisely
adjusted scale values
the reproducibility shall be within the tolerance over all three attempts
Spanners which do not fulfill the above requirements shall be separated.
