An island “whey”
of life

T
his is Burden Creek.
Not 150 years ago this area was known as
Exchange Landing, and Exchange Plantation
grew vast fields of long-staple cotton; the original source
of sea island cotton. In early July of 1864, it was also the
furthest point that a Federal expedition under Brigadier
General John P. Hatch was able to make it on to Johns
Island during the Civil War.
Today, Kipp Valentine still finds buttons, buckles, and
bits of Civil War paraphernalia when he’s plowing the
fields around Burden Creek Dairy. “One of the largest
Civil War military operations took place here,” said Kipp
as he stood at the end of a short wooden dock, looking

out over the quiet waters of the creek at low tide. Behind
him, a rustle of muted bells, distant bleating and stomping
hooves remind him that it’s getting close to 5:30 – time
to milk the goats.
Burden Creek Dairy, under the ownership of Katherine
and Kipp Valentine, has been making goat’s milk cheese,
or chevré, for the past four years; but that’s not really
when the story of Burden Creek cheese began. It began
on the Valentine’s wedding day, when a friend arrived
with a very unusual wedding present: goats.
“We kept them!” smiled Katherine Valentine. “We
started breeding them and kept the ones we liked.”

From a mixed bag of Nubian, Alpine and LaMancha
goats, the Valentines bred their milking goats for gentle
personalities, summer heat tolerance and, of course,
quality of milk and butterfat content. While Nubians
have excellent butterfat content and therefore perfect milk
for making cheese, said Katherine, their personalities are
a little lacking. “The Alpines are much friendlier,” said
Katherine, “and they tend to be healthier.”

Town financials
“Activity on the island is at least holding
equal to last year and building activities
are strong,” Mayor Holtz was happy to
announce, though the town is still a little
behind on business licenses. For the three
months ending in March, total revenues
are $194,207.77, only a little behind
last year-to-date’s total of $200,853.50.
Total expenditures are $122,636.37
($16,494.52 less than budgeted) and
excess of revenues over expenditures is
$71,571.40, compared to $97,122.35
from last year. “We’re still above budget,
still ‘making money’ as they say in
business,” smiled Holtz.
Roads committee
Councilman Sam Reed stated that the
Road Committee is continuing to meet
with the County Council concerning
Johns Island’s roads, and they are still
waiting on the LPA report, which should
be ready by late May. “We continue
to feel confident, but it’s like pulling
teeth,”said Reed. “It’s not easy.” To help
move the issue forward, a special Roads
Committee meeting was scheduled to
be held the Thursday after the Council
meeting.
“Because of the upcoming changeover
in County Council and Council
members leaving, we’re not sure if they’re
still focused on our problem,” said Holtz.
“We’re concerned about the Council
being able to move on the issue when the
study is complete and we’d like to have

Town website on its way
Councilman Jerry Cummin reported
that the website committee would meet
the Thursday after the Council meeting
and decide between the three companies
currently being considered to create the
town website, but Cummin cautioned
that it wouldn’t be a quick process. “The
implementation will take six weeks or
more,” said Cummin. In the meantime,
however, Shawna Jarrett of the Seabrook
POA is working on some temporary
improvements on the website and
Cummin encouraged everyone to visit
it and check out her work. “There are
some wonderful pictures by Bob Heir,
and links to the Marina, Freshfields and
the Club,” said Cummin. “We appreciate
the loan of her by the POA.” The town

Public Safety
Councilman Rob Savin stated that the
Disaster Preparedness plans are moving
along well and badges are being made for
first responders so that they can return to
the island in the event of an evacuation.
Approach to Seabrook road
improvements
Town Administrator Randy Pierce
addressed two issues on which the town
has been working. The drainage issue
along the Parkway will be finished up
in mid-May, and salt-tolerant grass will
be planted in the bare areas and where
the turf has been damaged by careless
drivers. Piece said the drain should work
much better and should flow out with the
tide. The total cost of the project came in
at just under $17,000.

Before going into the business of Council,
Mayor Wert asked for a moment of silence
for Sid Williams and Earl Carrara, two
Kiawah citizens who recently passed away.
The mayor asked that everyone take the
moment to offer their hopes and prayers to
the families.
First reading of the 2010/2011 budget
In response to a public hearing held just
before the Council meeting, Mayor Wert
stated that the Council would work to
answer several questions pertaining to the
budget during the next Council meeting
in June. He pointed out that this year’s
budget has been cut back considerably
and that currently, all charitable giving
has been cut out entirely. “This was
painful for all of us,” said Wert, “but
if we’re in excess when the new budget
comes in, we will meet and give the
excess funding to charitable organizations
that have been cut to zero this year.”
Council approved the first reading of the
budget unanimously.
Kiawah bridge revetment proposal
Councilman Steve Orban has mentioned
the erosion around the bridge on the
Kiawah Island Parkway during past
Council meetings, and during the past
month has had the situation evaluated.
“It’s not quite an emergency, but
something needs to be done,” said Orban,
pointing out that there is significant
erosion along the banks underneath
the bridge and the slope has increased
by a significant amount, mainly due to
the excess of rain this past winter. After
requesting proposals from Thomas &
Hutton and Collins Engineers, Collins
Engineers (the company that worked on
the bike path at Cinder Creek and Night
Heron Park) has agreed to design an
erosion control system and submit it to
DHEC/OCRM for $9500, contingent
on the assumption that no new survey
is required. If a survey is required,
Collins offered to perform the survey and
required delineation of the Critical Line,
and submit it to DHEC/OCRM for
$12,500. Council unanimously approved
an award not to exceed $25,000 for the
project, though Orban restated that they
could hopefully do the project for much
less than that. “It’s really a small job, only
about 150 feet needs to be stabilized,”
said Orban.
Solid waste removal agreement
Town Administrator Tumiko Rucker
recommended the approval of Carolina
Waste Services, LLC to perform beach
solid waste and recycling collections
on the Kiawah beach in the amount
of $40,500 per year for two years. As
they were the lowest qualified bidder
and the overall difference in cost to
the Town is an additional $4,500 per
year, the Council approved the contact
unanimously.

Piano series returns and Arts Season Finale
Councilman Lipuma ran through the
Arts Council events in April, stating that
all of the events were well attended, and
the Piccolo Preview performance at the
Church of Our Saviour with violinist
Yuriy Bekker and jazz saxophonist
Lonnie Hamilton was very impressive.
Because the Arts Council had a little
extra funding left over for the year, two
Piano Series encores will be held at the
Sandcastle on May 19 and May 26 from
4 p.m.– 6 p.m. on both days. “Bring a
friend, a bottle of wine and some cheese,
and enjoy the music and the surf,” smiled
Lipuma. The final Arts Council event for
the year will be a Zydeco performance by
accordionist J. J. Caillier and his band at
Night Heron Park on June 30 starting at
6:30 p.m.
Lastly, Lipuma announced that the
town received a very nice letter from
Jane Riley of Communities in Schools,
thanking them for the two town-
sponsored performances of Peter and the
Wolf at Angel Oak Elementary and Haut
Gap Middle, both of which were very
well attended. Riley also sent her letter to
the Post and Courier and it was printed
in the “Letters to the Editor” section.
Bike path etiquette
Councilman Orban announced
that some “rules of the road” will be
published in the next Town Notes
regarding bike path etiquette due to
some recent concerns. He also noted that
the Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) training through the
Kiawah Island Community Association is
underway and trainees should be certified
and available as needed by mid-summer.
The annual beach meeting is coming
up shortly, where all parties with interest
in beach safety (fire, police, beach patrol,
the Resort, etc.) will meet and go over
beach safety procedures and situation
handling. The KICA Safety Committee
has formed a small subcommittee which
is looking into the issue of dogs on the
beach and will submit their information
to the Town Council. “We’ll hear from
them, look at the ordinance and see if we
can change anything or keep it as is,” said
Orban.
Finally, Orban ran through the 2009

municipal court report and 2009 daily
activities report from the Charleston
County Sheriff’s office. The municipal
court report stated that Kiawah Island
handled 239 traffic, criminal and town
ordinance cases, and the Charleston
County Sheriff’s Deputies reported an
all time high of 432 traffic counts during
2009, up from 246 in 2008. Of the
contacts made, only about 40% resulted
in the issuance of a citation. The complete

Kiawah is green and giving
“It never ceases to amaze me, the
green conscience of this island,”
said Councilman McHugh before
announcing that 190 people are already
signed up to volunteer with the turtle
patrol. Monitoring of the beach for sea
turtles will continue from May through
October and McHugh reminded
everyone to turn out their lights at night
to keep hatchlings from crawling in the
wrong direction. McHugh also noted
that the Town of Kiawah provided
transportation for kids from Haut Gap
Middle School recently so that they could
go on a nature walk with Town Biologist,
Jim Jordan (see page 15).
Lastly, McHugh stated that Jim Jordan
will provide info on where he believes
bird sanctuaries should be along the
beach in regard to the dogs-off-leash
ordinance review.
Roads and oil spills
There’s still no report from LPA, the
group reviewing the potential for the
Johns Island Greenway and/or possible
expansion of Bohicket and Main roads,
said Councilman Al Burnaford, but they
should hear something by the end of
May. “One of the things slowing it down
is Boeing and the amount of work and
cost going into the North Charleston
road issue,” said Burnaford. However,
from preliminary info provided, it seems
that the Greenway option is at the top of
the list.
And in regards to the oil spill in the
Gulf, Burnaford stated that the Town
will be meeting with the County and
discussing what needs to be done in the

The District 8 Debate
In light of the upcoming County
Council and State House elections, the
Johns Island Council hosted two debates
during their regular Council meeting.
Republicans Fran Roberts and Thomas
Legare for County Council District 8,
and Republicans Anthony LaMantia and
Sean Pike for State House District 116,
were asked to present some information
about themselves before taking questions
from the audience. Democrats for these
seats will be heard during the June 3
meeting of the Johns Island Council.
Primary elections will be held on June
8, 2010. (Because their district does not
include Kiawah and Seabrook, Pike and
LaMantia’s debate was not included).
Elections for the Johns Island Council
were also held during the meeting.

Sam Brownlee were all reappointed to their
positions, and Jean Townsend was elected
as Secretary. There are currently four board
member positions open on the Council. If

Candidate Thomas Legare introduced

long history on the island and asserting
that his main issue is quality of life. He
is one of the founding members of the

agriculture, from a $34 billion industry
to a $50 billion industry by 2020.
Candidate Fran Roberts grew up in
West Ashley and served in the military
for five years before taking over his
family’s sign industry in 1987, which
he again turned over to his sons in
2007. Roberts has already served as a
Charleston County Councilman in
2000, and served on the Hollywood
Town Council as a Councilman and
Commissioner for Hollywood’s Board
of Zoning Appeals. He also served as a
Planning Commission board member for
the town of Ravenel, and served as the
Community Development Grant Advisor
for Charleston County.

“Johns Island already has development.
If elected, the first thing I would do
is balance the budget. We are wasting
money like there’s no tomorrow.”
Q: Would you have a public forum
before County Council meetings? (The
questioner elaborated that committees
often hold meetings and then take
their decision to council without
holding a public hearing.)
Roberts: I want to think that, when I
was there [serving on County Council],
we listened if the public had something to
say. I think it’s wrong not to have public
opinion before a vote. If you’re sitting in
that committee and I’m the head of that
committee, we will hear you.
Legare: I absolutely agree, it absolutely
needs to be
changed and it’s
one thing I hope

Q: How to
do you feel
about the I-526
extension
and the Cross
Island Parkway
(Johns Island
Greenway)?
Roberts: 526 is
already a state
issue and has
already been approved. After 40 years it
needs to happen. As for the Cross island,
we need to find a proper way to get it
there. I would say go down the power
lines. I travel Bohicket and River Roads
every day, and there are certainly some
trees that need to be moved back from
the road. I also signed a petition saying
that we need more law enforcement on
the island to help improve safety.
Legare: We’re already laying off teachers
and state troopers; where are we coming
up with the funds to build a 40-year-old
project? We can come up with another
way to move traffic. I don’t know if a
Cross Island road is the best solution,
but it’s s a start. If we spend $150 million
to make a road safer on Johns Island, I
want to make all of it safer, not just an
express highway that goes from Maybank
to Kiawah and Seabrook. Whatever your
political leaning, though, we don’t have
the money to build 526.
Q: Legare, where did you get $150
million number? What if it [The
Cross Island Parkway/Johns Island
Greenway] came in at under $50
million?
Legare: We don’t have $50 million;
we don’t have $150 million. Even if it’s
free, it will destroy lives and go through
homes. It’s a property rights issue, and it
won’t solve safety issues on Johns Island.

Beach Safety week proclamation
Mayor Holtz proclaimed May 24 – 31,
2010, to be National Beach Safety Week
on Seabrook Island. “This is our support
for safety rules,” said Holtz. “It’s very
important. I see kids out there on sand
bars and people still go out there even
though signs say that it’s dangerous.
People just need to be careful.” Council
approved the proclamation unanimously.

Q: What is the solution to traffic on
the east end of island? How do you get
traffic to that end of the island?
Roberts: if the best solution is the Cross
Island, then it needs to be funded. It can
be buffered so it’s only a straight shot and
won’t take away that many oak trees or
houses, according to the studies I’ve seen.
Legare: I will work with the towns of
Kiawah and Seabrook and look into
lower density, such as the Mullet Hall
development. 1200 homes there are way
too many.
Q: What are two most important
issues facing Johns Island and what
would you do to fix them?
Roberts: If I am selected to Charleston
County Council again, it’s the entire
Charleston county that I would have to
vote on. There are big issues on Johns
Island, but it’s too late to stop growth.
Legare: We discussed some of the big
ones earlier, but another thing that we
will have to deal with is garbage.
Q: How would you handle the school
budget?
Roberts: Charleston County doesn’t
charge you for the schools, the school
board does; Charleston County just
collects it for the schools.
Legare: Charleston County Council
doesn’ t have anything to do with it, but
I would advise everyone to stay on top of
school board elections.
Q: What one thing would you like to
see changed in Charleston County
Council?
Roberts: I would like the Council
members to keep in mind that they
don’t just represent one district but the
entire county. I would also like to see a
county supervisor where the Chairman
is also the administrator, similar to
Berkeley County. I would like the
three years he has lectured at Clare Hall,
University of Cambridge; University of
London; Yale University; and University
of Virginia. He is publisher and editor of
Journal for Preachers, a quarterly journal
of homiletics. He has been a visiting
fellow at Clare Hall College, University
of Cambridge, and has been elected a Life
Member of Clare Hall.
Dr. Clarke’s primary scholarly interest
has focused on religion and slavery in
the American South. His publications
include Wrestlin’ Jacob, A Portrait of
Religion in the Old South (1979), for
which he received Author of the Year Award
from the old Dixie Council of Authors and
Journalists; The Seminary Presidency in
Protestant Theological Seminaries (1995);
Our Southern Zion: Calvinism in the
South Carolina Lowcountry 1690 – 1990
(1996), for which he received the Francis
Makemie Award from the Presbyterian
Historical Society. He is also editor of Exilic
Preaching: Testimony of Christian Exiles in
an increasingly Hostile Culture (1998).
Dr. Clarke’s most recent and important
work is Dwelling Place: A Plantation
Epic (2005), for which he received the
2006 Bell Prize from Georgia Historical
Society for best book on Georgia history;
the Bancroft Prize given by Columbia

citizen-responsible. Many times they
won’t return calls, but I do. Also, the
majority of citizens in rural area cannot
go out to North Charleston for the
County Council meetings, and I think
their representatives should go to their
particular areas on occasion and listen to
their people.
Legare: I agree that many County
Council members have forgotten that
they represent the whole county. I
don’t know if a county supervisor is the
best way, but there are a lot of ways we
can improve services. People on Johns
Island can come to meetings on Johns
Island a lot easier than they can go to
County Council. That’s a big thing that
County Council can do; coming to their
constituents.
Q: One-third of Johns Island belongs
to the City of Charleston. Should we
be doing something like James Island
did? Should we be fearful of being
taken over and should we be defensive?
Roberts: As the City develops, it will
bring sewer and water. Those areas that
were annexed were annexed only because
they asked; there was no hostile takeover.
Legare: This is probably semantics, but
only one-fourth of the land, including the
airport, is in the city. The Urban Growth
Boundary is in the city and in the center
of island. That’s where heavy, dense
development is allowed. I always thought
it would be great if we could have our
own municipality, but now we see what’s
happening with James Island and how it
has deteriorated. We just need to hold the
City of Charleston to their promise and
not allow them to annex outside of the
Urban Growth line.

Yemen: The next
American challenge

Y
emen is a very new country. It
is a very ancient land. For many
centuries, it existed as South Yemen
and North Yemen. South Yemen is a plain
stretching from the highlands southward
to the Gulf of Aden. The population is
circa two million. The capital was Aden.
North Yemen has a population circa seven
and a half million and stretches from the
highlands to the Great Sandy Desert in
Saudi Arabia. Yemen is the southernmost
tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Its capital is
San’a. Immediately east of South Yemen is
Oman. Saudi Arabia is directly north and
west of Yemen.
Yemen’s first known civilization was the
Minaeans (1200 – 650 BC). The Sabaens
settled in Yemen in 930 to 115 BC. In 115
BC, the Himyarite dominated the area. In
the seventh century, Yemeni were converted
to Islam. They are predominately Muslim
today. In the year 1980, the North and
South Yemeni wrote a constitution which
united the two countries. There is only
an uneasy truce between the North and
South today. South Yemen is controlled
by the government from San’a, the capital,
to Aden, its seaport. The wealthiest part
of Yemen is Aden, where the Yemen oil
refineries are located. Like Afghanistan,
North Yemen is a mountainous tribal
country. The tribal war lords and their
militias pay little attention to the Yemen
government and army.
Al Qaeda has been very active in Yemen.
On October 12, 2000, they attacked the
USS Cole docked in the Aden harbor.
Seventeen American sailors were killed
and thirty five injured. A few Al Qaeda
leaders were arrested and sent to prison.
They later escaped into the mountains of
North Yemen which are controlled by the
tribal war lords. The Yemen government
has not been anxious to pursue them.
We have reports that Al Qaeda has
been rooted out of Iraq, Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Where did they go? They went
to Yemen. Al Qaeda has totally infiltrated
the mountain tribes of Yemen. They are
building roads, schools and hospitals.
They are providing food and shelter for
the people. Guns, munitions, money and
food are reaching the mountain tribes. Al
Qaeda is actively recruiting and training
the desperate young people of Yemen.
There is another force with which we
have to contend. The Taliban are being
pushed out of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
A few years back, the Taliban were home-
bred Afghan terrorists. Today, Pakistan
also has its home-grown Taliban. It was
the Afghan Taliban that provided Osama
Bin Laden with the training camps
in Afghanistan. The point is that the
Taliban and Al Qaeda have similar goals.
Al Qaeda is a pan-Arab organization
of Islamic terrorists. The Taliban are
nationalist Islamic terrorists in Pakistan
and Afghanistan. Both are determined to
kill Americans and Israelis.
The latest media reports indicate some
success on the rooting out of Taliban in
both Pakistan and Afghanistan. If they are
being pushed out, where will they go? They
will join Al Qaeda forces in Yemen. How
will they get there? By land they can pass
through the Arab Emirates and through
Oman. By water, small boats can easily
navigate the Gulf of Aden. From where
will the money, guns and food come? Iran
and other Arab countries sympathetic
to both the Taliban and Al Qaeda will
gladly supply what they can. In regard to
Iran, it is a straight shot from Iran to ship
arms, munitions, food and crude oil via
the Persian Gulf through the Straits of
Hormuz, to the Gulf of Oman into the
Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The
reverse trip takes Yemen refined oil back
to Iran. The Iranians are Shiite Islamists.
The Taliban are Shiite Islamists. Al Qaeda
is primarily Sunni. With America and
Israel as their targets, I am sure they will
discover areas of accommodation.
The joining of forces of Al Qaeda
and the Taliban is just a matter of time.
Yemen will be the next and perhaps the
most difficult challenge to America, Israel
and the West. Iraq and Afghanistan will
be too occupied with maintaining stabilized
governments. They will not be of much help.

Denario of Tiverton Farms, a dried herb
farm located in Goose Creek, Katherine
and Kipp began adding herbs d’ provence
and cracked black pepper to their cheese.

Gullah Heritage Celebration

I
n early January 2009, the Wadmalaw Island Community Center ended all of
their senior programs due to budget cuts. The programs, in which many island
seniors participated, were geared toward improving seniors’ quality of life and
preventing them from concentrating on illness and negative issues. Since then,
the newly formed Wadmalaw Island Citizens Improvement Committee (WICIC)
has been sponsoring several fundraisers in order to bring back the center’s senior
programs.
This May 15, WICIC will host a Gullah Heritage Celebration. The festival
will be the committee’s largest effort toward restoring the senior programs, which
WICIC is hoping to restore in June of this year. The committee is also hoping to
include nutritional programs along with the Center’s standard activities.
Our last festival, held in September 2009, drew more than 600 people to the
Community Center, and we hope to double the numbers at this Event.
This year, the Gullah Heritage Celebration will include food prepared by Gullah
Cuisine of Mount Pleasant; an auction of quilts made by senior citizens of the
Wadmalaw Island Community; a local art auction and auction of an original
djembe drum from Ghana, Africa; Gullah storytelling; singing and much more!
During the event, attendees will also have the chance to purchase signed copies of
the newly published cookbook, Gullah Cuisine: By Land and By Sea, featuring
recipes by Gullah Chef Charlotte Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins will be in attendance from
2 p.m. – 4 p.m. to sign copies.
The Gullah Heritage Celebration will be held on May 15 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Middle school students visit Kiawah Island with e-mentors
O
n Tuesday, April 27, 2010,
21 students and 14 adults from
the Communities In Schools
(CIS) E-Mentoring Program at Haut
Gap Middle School visited the Heron
Park Nature Center on Kiawah Island.
The students and mentors participated
in guided bike tours on the beach, spent
time learning about Kiawah Island
wildlife from a naturalist at the Heron
Park Nature Center, and ate lunch
in the park. The day was organized
by Robin Haggard, Communities In
Schools Student Support Specialist,
and Kate Parks, a Project Manager
with the Coastal Conservation League.
Ms. Parks’ mother, Kathryn Parks, is a
Kiawah Island resident and a mentor in
the program.
The students filmed their trip and
collected supporting materials so that
they could create a presentation on their
adventure for their classmates.
“I enjoyed riding a bike for the first
time, learning about local animals from
my mentor, and our delicious lunch,”
said Andrea Poteat, an eighth grader at
Haut Gap Middle School.
The Town of Kiawah Environmental
Committee and the Kiawah Island
Nature Program covered the cost of

students. Newton Farms donated lunch
for the entire group.
The E-Mentoring program at Haut
Gap matches adult mentors with students
and asks for weekly correspondence via
email. The students meet face-to-face
with the mentors at the beginning and
end of the year. In addition, mentors
are encouraged to also act as tutors to
their students or visit them during lunch
hours.
Communities In Schools of the
Charleston Area, Inc. is a local
non-profit organization whose
mission is to surround students with a
community of support, empowering
them to stay in school and achieve in
life. The overarching goal of CIS is that
all students complete high school. CIS
provides dropout prevention services
in Charleston and Berkeley counties
to 4,500 students and their families in
nineteen public schools, including St.
Johns High School, Haut Gap Middle
School, Angel Oak Elementary and
Frierson Elementary, all of which are on
Johns Island or Wadmalaw Island.

Golf Classic
A Tribute to Pete Radding

T
he Charleston Breast Center will
hold its inaugural golf tournament
on Monday, June 7, at Cassique
on Kiawah Island. The tournament is a
tribute to the late Pete Radding who died
in a plane crash on October 21, 2009, in
Summerville.
Pete Radding was a remarkable
man who is greatly missed. His career
with Corning Corp. as an executive
helped to forge Corning’s vision in
telecommunications and fiber optics.
His hobbies included working as a HAM
radio operator for numerous emergency
response disasters. He also enjoyed
aviation, and flew missions for Angel
Flights to transport critically ill patients
in need of specialized medical care.
Pete received the Golden Knight Award
from Clarkson University’s Alumni
Association for career achievement and
community service. He also won the
Angel Flight Pilot of the Year award for
his volunteer efforts, but Pete’s legacy to
the Charleston area is the many lives saved
through the Charleston Breast Center
(CBC). Pete played an instrumental role
in the strategic planning and launch of
the CBC. It was Pete’s vision to establish
the CBC as a non-profit facility to provide
services to all women, regardless of their
ability to pay. Words cannot express our
gratitude to Pete for the thousands of
hours of volunteer work and his direction
for the center.
In honor of Pete and his incredible
legacy, Radding family friend and
six-time winner of the LPGA tour Val
Skinner will be participating in this year’s
tournament. Val is now a Golf Channel
and CBS golf commentator, and The Val
Skinner Foundation, a program designed
to raise awareness among young women
about breast cancer, was named by Sports
Illustrator as one of the Top 10 pro
athlete charity endeavors. Val made this
commitment over 10 years ago after one
of her close friends on the LPGA tour,
Heather Farr, died of breast cancer at the
age of 23. Val will be offering a challenge
during the tournament and will speak at
the Awards Program.

10th Annual Women Build

W
ith a grand kick-off on Saturday, April 30, this year’s Sea Island Habitat
for Humanity Women Build project is officially underway with anywhere
from 30 to 40 women working on the 1,100 square foot home at any given
time. Even with a rainy washout on Tuesday, the new home was already standing on
its foundation with four walls up, the interior walls squared and two-thirds of the roof
support beams in place on Wednesday morning.
With the help of more than 18 women from Kiawah and Seabrook Islands and
several Lowe’s volunteers, as well as former First Lady of South Carolina Jenny Sanford,
the building was moving quickly toward the goal of a complete exterior by Saturday,
May 8.
“We’ve had a great turnout,” said Molly Coffey, Outreach Assistant for Habitat. “We
have about 35 women working every day and all 210 volunteer slots filled for the week.
Many of these women come out on multiple days, as well.”
The three bedroom, one and a half bath home, which is expected to be completely
finished by late summer/early fall, will go to Maribel Martinez and her three children,
and will be the “greenest” home ever built by Habitat. It will feature hariplank siding,
spray foam insulation and a solar hot water heater.
“This will all help to keep the utility bills low for the Martinez
family and also leave a smaller footprint on the environment,” said
Coffey.

Kiawah celebrates classic cars

espite drizzling  rain and gray skies,  the third annual Cars in the Park auto
show, presented by the Kiawah Island Community Association,  was a
smashing success! Over 300 automobile lovers of all ages  enjoyed leisurely
strolls through rows of classic and exotic treasures displayed throughout Kiawah’s Night
Heron Park soccer field. From a 1931 Ford Model A to a 2009 Lotus Exige 260, a rare
1949 MG TXECU to a 2003 Ferrari 360 Modena, this event included over 70 beauties
from all eras of motor vehicle history. Following the show, registered vehicles made their
way down Governor’s Drive to the Ocean Course and back in a 16-mile parade of cars.
Both participants and spectators left the event with an appreciation of the craftsmanship
and history of these unique vehicles.

n Monday, May 3, a small group of engineers, contractors and planners gathered
together at Cassique Club House on Kiawah Island to dedicate a project almost
15 years in the making. The Kiawah Bike Path, completed earlier this year,
was a significantly time-consuming effort that resulted in a beautiful, scenic and most
importantly, safe means of walking, biking or skating from Kiawah to Freshfields Village.
Kiawah Island Mayor William Wert thanked everyone for the time and effort they put
into make the bike path a success, and the first dedication plaque created for the bike
path was given to Councilman Steve Orban during the last Town Council meeting for
his tenacious efforts in making sure that the bike path project came to fruition and was
completed on time. Charlie Arrington, in-house designer for Kiawah Design Partners,
was especially thanked by the Mayor for giving the bike path “a beautiful front door.”
