removed and a stint put in, tests at the Mayo Clinic indicated the tumor was still quite large and hadnt shrunk as
much as the doctors had hoped it would. It was then that
Manning received devastating news. To ensure the cancer would not come back, Mannings doctor advised her
to have her leg amputated. There was an eighty percent
chance it could come back if the leg would not have been
removed. The surgery was scheduled for the next day, Nov.
6.
I had 24 hours to swallow that this leg will be gone,
said Manning. The next day in my hospital room, before
surgery, my daughters Ashley and Aundrea would not let
go.
While being prepped for surgery in the operating room,
Manning drew strength from God and her blessings from
heaven, five of her babies who died from miscarriages and
a nephew who also had passed away too young.
A priest came in to pray over me, she said. It was
so touching and calming because when he was praying,

STAFF WRITER
For some, a miracle might be a winning lottery ticket or a state basketball championship.
But for others, life itself is a miracle.
Stephanie (Edling) Borgerding, formerly of Sauk Centre, traveled from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, the beginning
of June for a week to visit family and friends, sharing her
story of how she fought cancer not only once, but twice in
her lifetime. She gives it all to God, as she utilized Him in
so many ways to find hope and strength, even at her weakest moments.
You never think cancer is going to touch you or your
family, Borgerding said. My whole story was a complete
miracle. It really helped me realize how strong I was.
When Borgerding was 16 years old, she met her future
husband, Conrad, at youth group in Sauk Centre. Borgerding graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 2008. In
2009 she married Conrad Borgerding and the two of them
moved to Ellsworth AFB, S.D., where Conrad was stationed in the Air Force. A year later, Conrad was deployed
overseas. The Borgerdings are currently stationed at Hill
AFB, Utah.
In 2012, having just turned 22 and excited to graduate
from college, life suddenly sped up for Borgerding. She
was diagnosed with a sinus infection that continued to get
worse.
I first visited my primary doctor and they diagnosed
me with a sinus infection, Borgerding said. I was prescribed painkillers which did not helpthe pain worsened.
A few weeks later, Borgerdings pain and pressure
again became unbearable, and she demanded more to be
done, so the ENT performed exploratory surgery where he
found a tumor that had grown to the point it had broken her
nose and her eye was out of the socket, distorting her vision. The doctor sent a biopsy to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for diagnosis.
The earliest appointment Borgerding was able to
schedule was three weeks out, and that was far too long.
She knew she needed to be seen immediately.
Conrads grandmother, Darlene Lester, had a connection at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and was able to make
it possible for Borgerding to get in and receive the care
she needed instead of waiting in Rapid City for the results.
During the week between the biopsy and the start of the
treatment, the tumor had grown from the size of an orange
to the size of a grapefruit.
Once at the Mayo, Borgerding was diagnosed with
Stage 3 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma; a rare soft tissue
pediatric cancer.
It was honestly a miracle to get into the Mayo so
quickly, Borgerding said. There were people waiting for
months outside in the lobby area, hoping to get even a few
seconds to speak with a doctor. I believe it was divine intervention that ultimately put me in the hands of Dr. Arndt
who specializes in Rhabdo before it was too late.
Borgerding has no family history of cancer and Rhab-

a power port for chemo and had to wear braces on her legs
to walk due to the nerve damage caused by the chemo.
I still have some nerve damage in my feet today, but
its significantly better, Borgerding said. Chemo takes
everything out of you.
After nine months of treatments, which included 83
chemo treatments and six weeks of daily radiation, Borgerding was declared cancer free. The Borgerdings were
granted a humanitarian move by the Air Force to Hill AFB,
Utah, so the couple could be together for quarterly follow
-up scans at a nearby hospital that is able to treat Rhabdo
patients. She finally had enough energy and time to do the
things she loved.
In 2013, during her remission scans, the Borgerdings
moved to Hill AFB in Utah. Remission scans required her
to get her blood drawn, an MRI, a PET Scan and a CT
Scan.
Around Christmas time, she felt a lump at the base of
her neck in a lymph node. She called the oncologist and
scheduled an appointment for the beginning of January.
After biopsy results came back, it was confirmed she
had another battle to fight against Rhabdomyosarcoma.
Borgerding was hospitalized at the Primary Childrens
Hospital in Salt Lake City for her second fight, where Conrad and her mother, Stacey Edling, were there for her, providing the love and support she needed.
There were specific protocols and chemo for Rhabdomyosarcoma that can only be treated by pediatric oncologists. This made Borgerding one of the oldest patients in
the entire hospital.
Borgerding remembers the kids riding trikes down the
hallways and playing, just as kids do.
It made me realize that kids fight with so much more
hope than adultsthey dont play the poor me card because they dont know any different, Borgerding said.
The fact that I was fighting next to these little superheroes
filled with so much hope was a miracle in itself that gave
me more strength to fight.
Friends have expressed how Borgerdings faith and
positive attitude through her fight with cancer have inspired
them and helped make their life struggles more bearable.
Having friends and family alongside to pray and support
her made coping with cancer much easier.
Whenever I was having a down day, someone would
give me a few words of wisdom or an inspirational quote
to get me through the day, Borgerding said. God has really used me to reach out to other people and inspire people
through my fight.
Borgerding shares what cancer taught her:
Cancer changes people, it sculpts us into someone
who understands more deeply, appreciates more quickly,
hopes more desperately, loves more often and lives more
passionately.
What God is bringing you through at this very moment is going to be the testimony that will help bring someone else through their trial. Your greatest test is when you
are able to bless someone else while you are going through
your own storm.
Stay strong, make them wonder how youre still
smiling because each day is a gift, so dont send it back
unopened. Always remember your life is your message to
the world, so make sure its inspiring.
A year later, Borgerding was once again cancer free
and decided to go visit her brother, Drew, in Florida. Because of a weaker immune system she came down with a
strep infection in her bloodstream causing her to get Scarlet Fever. She had to be quarantined in a Florida hospital
for a week.
Now, life is a little bit different, Borgerding said. I

Rachel (Mayers) Von Wahlde, a native of Freeport, was inspired at a young age to go into nursing.
Growing up in high school, she helped care for her
grandma who told her she would make a great nurse.
Von Wahlde, 34, started nursing at CentraCare
HealthMelrose in 2002 as an LPN after graduating
from St. Cloud Technical College. She continued to
work at the hospital and in 2006, she completed her
degree at Fergus Falls Technical College with her
RN.
In 2005, Von Wahlde got married to Mike and
moved to a dairy farm in Melrose, where they are
raising three children together; Madisyn, Greta and
Luke.
Von Wahlde has worked at a hospital, nursing
home and within the last one and one-half years has
been working as a chemotherapy nurse, along with
being a surgical nurse and an OB educator at the clinic twice a month.
Von Wahlde said there are three trained chemotherapy nurses at CentraCare HealthMelrose. The
role of the three nurses is to work within the outreach,
chemotherapy and OR departments.
Approximately 20 chemotherapy treatments are
completed in a month with each visit on average lasting at least four hours.
Von Wahlde said the typical day for a patient follows this format: the patient comes in the morning
and labs are drawn. The results are reviewed to make
sure they are within the correct parameters. Next, the
pharmacist is notified to prepare the medications and
chemotherapy as ordered. If the results are good, according to their treatment plan, the patient will receive pre-treatment medications, which generally
include anti-nausea medications. Once infused with
those medications, the patient has a 30-minute wait
to make sure the medication is in and working. The
chemotherapy starts after that.
All chemo drugs are administered differently.
Some are through an IV and some are an injection,
Von Wahlde said. Some treatments may infuse over
10 minutes and others may last for two hours.
Prior to starting any chemotherapy infusion, two
nurses perform safety checks to be sure the correct
dose is given to the correct patient.
As a chemo nurse, Von Wahlde is responsible
for making sure the patient is treated properly.
First, she goes through an assessment with
the patient. If a patient has changes in symptoms, increased fatigue, fever, cold symptoms,
Von Wahlde will notify the oncologist to determine if the treatment should be continued. She
is always on the lookout for signs of a reaction
and is ready to implement the proper procedures if there is any reaction.
Von Wahlde gained more and more appreciation for her work and compassion for the patients she
helped treat.
It is important that I treat patients like another person and not an illness, Von Wahlde said.
I try to help them stay positive and try to be a good
listener.
By far, the most rewarding aspect of being

Aided by a walker, Manning is determined to use her

entire lower limb at the hip level), Manning will need the
robotic device which will include the joints of the hip, knee
and ankle. Manning will be fitted for the leg on June 15,
just nine days prior to her walk in the Relay for Life.
I was told I could use a golf cart at the event, but I am
determined to walk it, said Manning, who has taken part
in the Relay for Life with her family the last eight years,
walking for other people.
I could sit back and watch the world pass me by, or
I could continue on and be part of it and thank God every
day that I am here and can see my kids grow up, said a
determined Manning.
