“It’s a funny old world.”
It was reported in the press recently that a church in the
West Midlands erected a large cross, for which they received
a bill from the local council because it was classified as an
advertisement. You do begin to wonder if some people don’t
have anything better to do?
On the other hand, perhaps the council were right? Stop
and think about all the people you know, or have passed on
the street, or seen on the telly - who wear a cross. Loads of
people! Some glossy magazines have full-page ads for
diamond studded gold crosses, because they are so popular.
It must be the most well known symbol in the whole world
but do we give it a second thought?
A Christian minister put a miniature model of a gallows
around his neck and said, “What do you think of my new
necklace?” His point being that w e can wear a cross and
forget that it was a means of execution. However, that is not
why people wear a cross. The cross is a sign of hope, but it
hasn’t always been that way.
The person who made it so was Jesus Christ, whose birth,
life, death and resurrection are still remembered and
celebrated after 2000 years. He addressed the two big ones
about our existence on earth: What’s life all about? and,
How do we make sense of death?
What better way could God advertise this than through His
Son, and what His Son did for us by breaking through the
death barrier and opening up the gift of life beyond the
grave? Next time you see a cross call to mind God’s message
to YOU…“This is how much I love you.” Have a joyful Easter.
Christian greetings,

Saturday Monthly Informal Worship
The next informal worship at the Baptist chapel will be
on the second Saturday in May,
4.00pm 13th May 2006.
As the school holidays are the two weeks leading up to
Easter it was decided to miss the second Saturday in
April as many people will be committed to family
activities, as well as attending special Easter services.
A big ‘Thank You’ to Sherfield School for hosting
our March worship, and for the guided tour and
wonderful tea that was enjoyed by about 20 people.

Holy Week
On Maundy Thursday, 13th April, at 7.00pm in the Liddell Hall,
there will be a celebration of Jesus’ Last Supper in the form of an
Agape Meal, to include holy communion. This is an ecumenical
service and Christians of all denominations are invited.
On Good Friday, at 11.00am, there will be an
Hour at the Cross meditation in St Mary’s Church,
Stratfield Saye. All are welcome.

For details of Easter Sunday services please see the front cover.

Prayer for the Month.
1 Cor inthians 15 : 54 - 57
When the per ishable has been clothed with the imper ish able, and the
mortal with immorta lity, then the saying that is wr it ten will co me true:
"Deat h has been swallowed up in v ictory." "Where, O deat h, is your

power of sin is the law. But than ks be to God! He giv es us the victory

GRANNY’S ATTIC
SALE
Reported by Sheena Archer.
Thank you very much to all
those who helped before,
during and after the sale on
Saturday 11th March and to those who donated items for sale.
It was commented that the tents erected in Donald and Elizabeth
Dawson’s garden, for the sale, resembled the eve of Agincourt,
but they went some way to protecting us, as a cold sleet fell, just
as the sale opened. However the sun soon came out again and
bargain hunters arrived. It was a very pleasant and friendly
occasion that raised £600 for the St. Leonard’s Restoration fund.

PERCY’S PLANT SALE

Prepare your pots a nd plots.
The sale will be held on Saturday 13th May
at Orchard Lea, Sherfield on Loddon.
Details in the May edition of this magazine.
Please bring you plant donations to:
1 Orchard Lea on Friday 12th May. Thank you.

EASTER !

It’s origin The derivation of the name ‘Easter’ is uncertain.

According to St Bede (673-735), it is connected with an
Anglo-Saxon spring goddess called ‘Eostre’, an ancient
pagan festival at which eggs were exchanged, hence Easter
Eggs. As people were converted to Christianity so, as with
Christmas, the festival was ’christianised’ celebrating Christ,
the Son of God. *

Its Message The Feast of the Resurrection of

Christ is celebrated at Easter, being the oldest
and the greatest of the Christian festivals, with
the proclamation…
“Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again!”

Its Date Why does the date of Easter change each year?
The answer is because it is linked with the stages of the
moon, the lunar calendar. The date of Easter is always: the
first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the 21s t March,
the spring equinox. If you don’t believe me check your diary.

What does Easter mean TODAY? I did a quick “vox pops”

of some people in our parish to find out what Easter means
to them. PTO. to read what they said………….

A peaceful and joyful Easter to you all. Bob Politt

Question: What does the festival of Easter mean to you
as a Christian? or What event/s in your life brought the
message of Easter alive for you?

Good Frida y 1956

“Shouldn’t we go to church on Good Friday”, asked a 17 year
old boy. “There’s no service in our church”, replied his father.
“But there is one on today in another chapel”, said the boy.
So they went. The boy was the only one under 50 and was
pounced on by the minister after the service.
Trapped the boy stood there reading over
the minister’s shoulder the verse on the
notic e board — John 3 : 16 — “For God so
loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life”. And God
said to the boy, “that is what Easter is about”
and that is how I became a Christian.
John Williams, Retired GP

Some years ago I bought a few 6” nails –

I don’t know the reason or even if any
were ever used, but they have remained
in the tool shed ever since. As we were
erecting the tents for the recent Granny’s
Attic Sale I was asked if I had any 6”
nails to anchor some guy ropes.
Remembering the ones in the tool shed I
said “yes” and they were subsequently retrieved and used. I
have now kept them where I can see them daily. They remind
me of the nails that pierced the hands and feet of Jesus. It
makes me think of the suffering he went through on the cross
to pay for our sins. Just to look at those nails…..
After Easter I will put them away until Lent next year.
Donald Dawson, Re tired Doctor

25
It's easy for Easter to become something
that you just do - give up something for
Lent, attend church, buy and give Easter
eggs. If you can get yourself out of that
groove, Easter can be a great time for
reflecting on themes such as sacrific e,
restraint, obedience, temptation.
I suppose for the most part I live my life
in a very individualistic way and it's a time for repentance.
It's a time for focusing on the purpose of our lives here on
earth and what Christ would like our legacies to be.
Ka re n Blakeley - Organisational Psychologist

Easter is the most important thing God has

ever done or will ever do for us. If we embrace
it, Jesus’ sacrifice forgives our sins, giving us a
direct channel of communication to our creator,
ultimately enabling us to be with him in heaven.
I find Easter quite humbling.
Ian Goodall, IT Manager

The fact that Jesus was there

on the Cross to endure all that
pain and anguish for us
to make us new again is so
humbling and comforting.
Milly & Dave,
Grateful Pensioners

Good Friday and Easter are about hope

conquering despair and giving us all the
chance to start life again. A life of joyous
awareness that God Loved, God Gave.
I believe and I have Everlasting Life.
Pe te r Gould, Retired Ba nk Mana ge r

26
"Good Friday and Easter Sunday can be
difficult to get your head around. I have cried
out to Him for help when really desperate and
somehow He has been there....I talk to Him on
and off every day, I have a relationship with
Him. The fact Easter happened show God's
immense love for me and everyone else and
my response is to love him back. No one can
take away and disprove a friendship, I have a
living God who wants to be invol ved with me, its an offer I can't
refuse."
Anne Hemmings
Proprieter of Ede n, Ladie s clothe s, Odiham

Easter for me is a tim e of spiritual rebirth.

Over the course of Lent I consider all the
wrong things that I have done (and continue
to do!), and how Christ died to save me from
my sins. Subsequently, His resurrection
reminds me that if I truly repent of my sins,
I am reborn in His name.
Ke vin, Laboratory Director

The Easter message is truly amazing and the main reason I

became a Christian. God loves us so much that he sacrificed his
only perfect and sinless son. I have two sons of my
own and so this is beyond my imagination - what an
incredible gift of love and grace. The crucifixion and
resurrection of Jesus means that anyone, whatever
they may have done, who asks God’s forgiveness
and lets him into their life, will be forgiven and inherit
eternal life. This is a love which excels all others
and is offered to anyone who wants it. Amazing.
Claire Osborne, Full-time Mum and occa sional Editor!

Parking for Bramley School
Unfortunately this continues to be a problem. Parking is difficult at the
end of a school day. However parking in front of res idents driveways is
not acceptable. The school has s ent out letters as king parents not to
obs truct the driveways . Parents have also been spoken to about not
causing an obstruction. It would appear that some people are ignoring
what has been as ked of them. It has been decided that if vehicles are
found to be obstructing a driveway, the regis tration number will be
taken and the driver spoken to by school staff. If a vehicle continues to
cause an obs truction then the police will be notified. It is realis ed that
children need to be collected and people need to park, all the res idents
ask is that their driveways are not obstructed.

The Women’s Institute
Re ported by Val Denny

Our meeting was on what the Met. Office has now decided is the
first day of Spring, March 1st. We had, however, a wintry day
and a very snowy meeting. Our speaker, Rhys Jones, told of his
ambition to climb the highest mountain in each continent (all well
above the snowline, of course). Rhys, though just turned twenty,
only has Everest left to climb. He started with Mount McKinley,
(in Alaska, I think,) and the most recent, at the second attempt
was a high peak in the Andes. His photographs were absolutely
stunning—snow, glaciers, blue skies and breath-taking views.
He is also an excellent speaker and kept us amazed and
entertained for more than an hour. He showed us his equipment,
including the BOOTS, whic h no doubt explain why he still has
the full complement of toes and fingers in spite of the wind and
cold on the mountain.

Next month Gwen Appleton tells us, “I don’t want to complain

but—” which sounds light-hearted for our birthday meeting.

Kathleen Gaiger discussed the project for National’s ninetieth

birthday—an embroidered linen cloth for our table at the
meetings; we have seven volunteers for the North Basingstoke
Group round of the quiz (read your newspapers, ladies!); we
need a larger coach for our outing to Malmsbury and Abbey
Gardens; we are to take a table in the Calor Gas Competition
and do the teas for the same. It’s just one mad whirl!

We have some splendid bakers in this W.I. and the teas always
send us home happy.

NWR met recently to discuss the Philosophies of Life. Various

philosophies were discussed such as, treating people as we would
wish to be treated ourselves, you've only got one life so make the
most of it, never put off 't il tomorrow what you can do today, or
alternatively, leave 'til tomorrow what you haven't been able to do
today! Other suggestions were: be punctual, drive as though you
have a police car following you and never go on holiday without
cleaning and tidying the house! Its amazing how many sayings we
have to try to dictate how we organis e our lives. It generated a lot
of lively discussion.

Our next meeting is 'Making a Difference' when we will be discussing

people who have changed the world in which we live. NWR will be
represented at the Calor 10th anniversary competition on 19 April
and will be keeping our fingers crossed for a win!

In May we will be visiting Exbury Gardens when we will join our old
friends, Gail and John Bannister who used to live in Sherfield.

For further information on NWR, please ring 882106.
