A Year in the Life

June 1996-June 1997

Right: Peace in the Middle East remained unstable as the school year began. A crisis
erupted after Israel opened a new exit to a tunnel alongside a plateau, raising suspicions
among Muslims that the Israelis were seeking to change the delicate religious balance of
Jerusalem's Old City. The incident proved to be the breaking point in mounting Palestinian
frustrations with the lack of movement in carrying out peace accords. Demonstrations
followed in which nearly 100 people were killed. Then emergency meetings were arranged
by President Clinton in Washington between Benjamin Netanyahu and Yasir Arafat.

Left: Months after TWA Flight 800 exploded midair in the summer
of 1996, investigators were still searching for a cause. The Boeing
747 jumbo jet plunged into the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of
Long Island, minutes after taking off from Kennedy Airport for
Paris. All 230 people on board were killed. The crash seemed to set
off a series of in-flight disasters, including a number of other crashes
and mid-air hostage situations.

Above: For the first time since the 1993 Gulf War, the American military took action against Iraq and
its leader Saddam Hussein. Iraq sent its troops into the Kurdish enclave in northern Iraq and in retaliation,
the United States launched air attacks against Hussein's southern air defenses. Hussein has abused his
people since the ruling Baath party assumed power nearly 30 years ago. And since the end of the Gulf
War he has continued to assassinate his political enemies.

Right: Boris Yeltsin was re-elected

President of Russia and pledged to
continue the reforms he began five
years ago. However, the 65-year-old
president began immediately to show
the signs of severe heart problems. It
was announced that he had at least two
heart attacks in the past two years and
open-heart surgery, considered the only
solution to his life-threatening disease,
was performed. He recovered from the
surgery and quickly returned to his
duties as President.

Year-In-Review

Right: Olympic gold Medalist Michael

Johnson has what track coaches call
speed endurance - the ability to carry
top speed. He proved he had endurance
plus. Johnson won an unprecedented
double win at the Summer Olympics in
Atlanta. He won the 200 and 400 meter
races. Johnson's performance was
equaled by many other athletes from the
United States at the Games, including
the women's gymnastic team, which
clinched a gold medal with a vault by
Kerri Strug, who performed with a bad
ankle. The Olympics were not without
tragedy, though, as a deadly pipe bomb
exploded in Centennial Olympic Park,
injuring more than 100 people.

the retreat, nobody wanted to leave.

Right: Here, the G.C. Retreat team is seen with hats from many different schools. The hats were exchanged to show

Left: While the retreat had some serious

aspects, the retreatants still had an incredibly
fun time .
Above: The G.C. group gathers for a group hug. Some of the members barely knew each other before the retreat,
however, they all became much closer as the retreat went on.

At about 4:30 on a weekday morning in March, a small group of people met in the parking
lot at G.C. The group consisted of Mike Phillips, senior Kim Lenoci, and juniors Mike
Addabbo, Angela Beaver, Bridget Broullire, Elesha Gamble, Brendan Garvin, Christy
Graves, Matt Hescock, Jeanne Lynch, Toni Mardirossian, and Matt Zogby. Nobody
really knew what exactly was going on. All the retreatants were given was a vague idea called
XBSS and a place named Holyoke Massachusetts. Upon arriving at the retreat center the
retreatants began to meet students from the 13 other Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools
that exist in the Eastern half of the U.S . All of the Schools had very different settings coming
from Maryland, Massachusetts, Brooklyn, Louisville, Birmingham, and Connecticut. At first,
the retreatants stuck together in their school groups, not really mixing with the other schools.
However, after hearing the talks, and getting into the retreat spirit, the students from different
schools slowly began to talk to each other and even make some new friends. The topics
covered on the retreat were things like Diversity, Unity, Leadership, Spirituality, and Service.
Everyone had a chance to express their thoughts and by the end of the retreat everyone knew
the G.C. team as a group of people that knew what they believed and were willing to tell you
about it. Overall, the retreatants said that they got a lot from the retreat. They discovered a
little bit of the Xaverian tradition which Good Counsel was founded on, they gained lifelong
friends, and they learned a great deal about themselves. After returning from the retreat, the
XBSS team founded the XBSS Club which plans to continue the Xaverian Tradition through
service. With this in mind the XBSS retreatants put on the very successful Junior Retreat in
May which over 80 people attended. The entire XBSS Club wanted to thank Mr. Phillips
for his dedication and commitment to the XBSS program and for his help in the XBSS Club.
Also, the retreatants wanted to give a huge " thank you" to Kim Lenoci for giving up so
much time of her senior year to make this a wonderful experience for them, because without
her it would not have been possible.

Spirit Week

The Falcon proudly displays the Spirit Stick at the Pep

Rally on Friday September 27. The classes each earned
points and the class with the most points, the Seniors,
won the Spirit Week contest.

This year, Spirit Week was celebrated the short week of school before Homecoming.
Instead of having the Spirit Stick won by the class with the most spirit at the Pep Rally, the class
with the most points, by winning a contest to decorate the halls, and several competitions for
students most in theme constumes, won. The Seniors won, but only after a tough battle with the
other classes, especially the Sophomores. For the Senior and Junior girls, the most exciting point
of the week came on Thursday night when the Powder Puff Football game was held, with Juniors
winning by one touchdown. The Pep Rally for fall sports, traditionally held on the day of the
Homecoming football game was held outside in the bleachers, due to construction in the gym.
Hosted by festively dressed members of the Student Council, each teams' Seniors were introduced
to the school, amid much applause. The captains then got a chance to tell the school a little about
their sport, ending with a play by the football team.
The theme days were a variety of subjects, including a 70s day, where students dressed
like their parents probably did in high school; and of course Blue and Gold day on Friday. Most
students showed their school spirit by dressing down, and some, like Chris Leverenz, dressed in
more spirited outfits.

Seniors Jen Dean and Chris Donahue show their

school spirit in blue and gold. Seniors were especially
likely to show their spirit in their last year at Good
Counsel.

were not Seniors, Prom was a special evening for everyone.

The Senior Prom was held at the Bethesda Hyatt on May 16, 1997. The theme of the evening,
Unchained Melody, by the Righteous Brothers was complemented by a song composed by
Azal Kahn. Azal's song, which he played on the hotel' s grand piano had been written especially for the evening. In addition, there was a DJ, who played songs that the Senior class
had requested in the weeks before the dance.
The Senior Prom was a moment the entire class had anticipated since the beginning of
April, an evening that would signal the beginning of their graduation process, but also would
signify their entrance into adulthood. Donning tuxedos and formal dresses, the class prepared
themselves for what was supposed to be the most exciting evening of their high school lives.
Commented one Senior, ''I was sad to see it end, it was a really fun evening.'' Those thoughts
were shared by everyone who attended the dance.

time taking pictures at each other's houses before

Senior Award Ceremony

and Brekfast
On May 30, 1997 the Senior class
gathered for a final meal and an awards
ceremony, as their last meeting at Good
Counsel. At the Senior Breakfast, which
preceeded the formal awards ceremony, Mr.
Bates and other teachers were able to present
awards they thought fit the Class of 1997.
Among the awards presented were "Biggest
Brown-nosers," which went to AJ Finch and
Debbie George, and "Best Impersonator,"
which Chris Convey received for his
impression of Ms. Nichols. Other students
were recognized for their scholarly ways,
Norman Lo and Monica Welker with the
"There Is Life Outside of Math/Science"

Awards, or for their untiring work with the

wrestling team, Tara and Colleen Nattrass.
These awards were meant by the teachers and
administrators to be fun and light-hearted,
unlike the Awards Ceremony that followed in
the gym.
As the Class of 1997 processed into
the gym, wearing royal blue caps and gowns,
there was a sense of anticipation and finality. It
seemed as if, with the recognition of the past
four years condensed into two hours, an era
was ending at Good Counsel. Represented by
speaker Greg Pflaum, the Class remembered
the past four years, and congratulated
themselves on a job well done.

On September 28, 1996 the students of Good Counsel enjoyed their Homecoming
Dance in the gym, the summation of a week long celebration of spirit and community. The
theme song, Wonderful Tonightby Eric Clapton, was voted on by the students and was played
as the last dance. The decorations, especially the balloon arch that greeted students at the
bottom of the stairs, were appreciated by all of the students. The K.ing,Mike Dillon, and Queen,
Jannelle Cortes, had been voted on by the Senior class and led the evening's festivities.
Planned and put on by the Student Council, most of the student body attended and
the activities were a big success. Beside the dance, the Student Council planned a number of
activities for the Homecoming football game the night before, including the presentation of the
Homecoming Court to the student body. The excitement of Homecoming weekend was
enhanced by the football team's win against McNamera on Friday, September 27, 1996.

Varsity Football

The Falcons had a

wonderful season in 1996, winning
thei r last 8 games in a row and the
Dallas Shirley Bowl at Byrd
Stadium. Their 10 wins were the
most ever and their league record
was 7-1 which was the best in the
WCAC. Things started slowly as
they traveled 300 miles to play a
Virginia State semi-finalist in
Pulaski County. The practice at
Virginia Tech was a treat, but
Pulaski taught them that they still
had a long way to go to be a strong
team. A week later they traveled to
Fairmont Heights where a strong
defense and long touchdowns by
Seniors Kenney Gaskins and
DougBostgotthemthewin. Next
came a hard fought los s to
Georgetown Prep and a very
sati sfying shut-out of the big, fast
John Carroll Lions. At 2 and 2 they
met the undefeated McNamara
Mus tangs. Their go-ahead
tou c hdown was erased by a
penalty and they were unable to
repeat their 1995 upset. They
certainly had not realized that they
would not lose again. Their streak
began with a home win over
Bishop Ireton and a road win at

Pallotti. They traveled to St

John's on Sunday afternoon,
went ahead 14-0, added two
Chris Kark field goals and hung
on for an exciting win. Their first
game against Dematha in five
years was at GC the next week.
They had not beaten the Stags
si nce 1970! Encouraged by
Coaches Todd Dickerson and
Carlos Smith who remembered
their 1968 tie that shocked
Dematha, the Falcons upset the
undefeated and top-ranked
Stags! Two challenges remained
in the regular season. They
struggled early but eventually
beat Paul VI. Then on a cold and
wet Saturday night in Arlington,
the Falcons, led by Gaskins and
Bost, fought back in the fourth
quarter to defeat a determined
O'Connell team. Their semi-final
game was a rematch with Paul VI.
Tony Ceballos'84 yard kick-off
return sparked a decisive win.
At Byrd Stadium they completed
the season with a terrifically,
satisfying team victory over St.
John's. A wonderful season
ended with their best possible
effort.

Playing Well Together:

Boys' Varsity Soccer
ByNovember5, 1996, witharecordof
6-5-4, the soccerteam was hoping to upset rival
Paul VlandDeMatha before entering the WCAC
tournament on November 12. "We need to win
some of these tough games so we can get ali ttle
momentum going into the playoffs. We have an
incredible amount of talent, but we are stuggling
a little bit because we aren't playing well
together. If we could unite as a team we could
win the division," said goalie Jason Lawrence.

The Falcons were led by senior captainsJason

Lawrence and Steve Corsini, who always
seemed to provide the team with some needed
intensity. Juniors Nick Essig, Kevin Kessler,
and Nick Fullenkamp are also playing extremely
well, according toLawrence. "We're struggling
a little bit on defense, but Jason has saved us
a bunch of time. He is one of the best in the
league," said Corsini.

As of early November, the Falcons

were in fourth place in the WCAC, butLawrence
felt that they could have gotten to the
championship on November 12. However, with
a 1-0 lead and two minutes to go in the game, the
Falcons allowed Gonzaga to score and tie the
game. "If we let important games like that slide,
wewon'tmakeit. However, we'renotgoing to
let it happen again," said Lawrence.

s Freshman Baseball

Success isn' t always defined by who won the most games or who had the most hits. This year's J.V. Baseball team discovered this as
their successful season came to a close. They may not have won all of their games, but they learned to play as a team, and worked on
improving their individual skills. Led by Coach Pat Messett, and captains Kevin Messett, Matt Sahadi, and Rob Robinson, these
fourteen sophomores and three freshmen grew as a team. No matter what position they were playing, or whether they were keeping
the spirits high in the dug-out, these young men learned the true meaning of success.

When the freshmen aren't batting, catching, or pitching, they're relaxing on the bench
and posing for the camera.

These guys give new meaning to the words ' 'being

on the mound." Whether or not they won, the team
still managed to have lots of fun.

Here comes the baseball team from its victory. For the
J. V. team, it was all about teamwork.

Boys J.V. Baseball

This year's freshman baseball team was a year of preparation

for future Varsity and JV players. All the boys became experienced with high school ball, and learned how to learn and
build as a team. Brian Chap commented, ''We got started off
kind of slow, but now we're doing pretty well." The team,
coached by Burger and Crimm was forced to start at the beginning, as none of the players had been teammates before.
They came together nicely though, especially at the end of the
season, as a I 0-0 victory over O'Connell was a highlight. Hitting was predominantly led by Sam Evans and Pat McCarthy,
and pitching was done by Chris Heizmann. Look for these
boys continuing the tradition of baseball excellence in G.C.'s
future.

Wisniewski, and Bob Hass improved the team's defe nse and were rewarded by April's 3-2 win over " unbeatable" O'Connell. This was the first time ever in
G.C.'s history that the girls had won this to ugh match.
The hard work and dedication of the entire team was
definitel y evident by the excellent performance of the
Varsity team thro ughout the year.

had a fabulous start. With fi ve of its fourteen

players from last year's team, and eight freshman, the girls work hard to come together as
a team. The leadership of captains Claire
Bryant, Danni Serra, and Debbie Leach
was vital for success. With their talent, the
team came off to an 8-0 start, including a big
win over Holy Cross before being defeated
by O'Connell. This defeat pulled the team
e ven stronger. As freshman Maureen Lanigan said it, " We have great hitting and fielding, and work excellent as a team." The team
enjoys playi ng together and the number of
freshman on the team proves that G .C.'s softball program will grow stronger in the future.

The Junior and Senior Softball teams, led by

Mr. Burns (Seniors) and Mr. Ostrowski
(Juniors), had another successful season.
Beginning in April, both teams practiced hard
and played a tough season, crammed intotone
month. The league was led, for the fourth year,
by the Seniors (Good Counsel A), who won the
season with an undefeated record of 8-0. The
Juniors had a few losses to the Seniors and to
Gonzaga A, which they overcame to do well in
the tournament at the end of the season. The
Seniors, who began the season with a four year
winning streak, had two tournament losses to

DeMatha A, who won the tournament but was

defeated by G.C. in the final game to determine
the league champion. TheJuniorteam was also
competitive finishing the season with a 7-5
record. Their highlight ocurred during the
game against the G.C. A team, when thejuniors
battled back early take the lead before losing to
the Seniors' two winning runs. Although many
were considered for MVP,Justin Smith won
the award. The Seniors leave for the Juniors a
few records, including the most sacrifices in a
season, Pat McGivern, and most hits in a
season, Rod Dwyer, to break in next season.

Juniors

The Junior class began their year with excitement, showing their enthusiasm because they were finally
upperclassmen. The eagerly anticipated three day Junior Retreat at Sparks was most cet1ainly the
highlight of the year. Students were able to form new friendships within the class, and the Junior
class as a whole was pulled closer together. This experience, combined with the class' willingness to
usher in the new IB Program at GC, prepared the Juniors for the Leadership ceremony that was held
in May. It was then that they officially began to take on their roles as leaders for the following year.

This year the sophomore class entered school with a new spirit. No longer the newcomers not knowing what to
expect from high school, they began their year with confidence and pride in their class. Throughout the year, their
sense of community grew, as could be seen in their tremendous showing during Spirit Week and at Pep Rallies.
They experienced a year of growth; academically and athletically, as they strived to achieve their very best, as well
as spiritually, as they experienced their first away from school retreat.

Good Counsel has welcomed a new era into its doors. T hey are smart, ambitious, and energetic.
We call them the Class of 2000! With this space-age title ringing in their ears, this freshman class
seems to be the brightest group Good Counsel has seen yet. With the tough admission standards
of GC behind them, this class has made a smooth transition into the sometimes intimidating, fastpaced nature of a high school freshman. From impressive school spirit to enthusias m in retreat,
these freshman show promising potential as being the great leaders of the next century, in addition
to being the "fresh" new faces of Good Counsel.

Michael Murphy
President
An era ended at Good Counsel this year when Mr. Michael
Murphy resigned as President. Looking through yearbooks from
1964-1997, a history of Good Counsel develops along with a biography of Mike Murphy. Good Counsel changed dramatically,
thanks mostly to the hard work and dedication of Mr. Murphy.
He graduated from Good Counsel in 1968 and then went on to
the University of Maryland. He returned to G. C. in 1973 as a parttime English teacher and also assisted at the front desk. The following year, he taught English full time. Throughout the 70's, he
was involved with all the drama productions.
In July, 1986, Mike Murphy became the Principal of Our Lady
of Good Counsel High School. Never would G.C. be the same
again. Change was in the air, and Mr. Murphy brought our school
to the forefront as one of the best in the D.C. metropolitan area.
Physically, the building began to change. Drafty old windows were
replaced and the general condition of the building was improved.
Adding much needed space, Mr. Murphy was responsible for the
science wing and the Rafferty Center. Even the Senior Courtyard
was inspired by him. Perhaps the biggest change though, was the
arrival of female students in the fall of 1987! Enrollment began to
steadily increase, and Good Counsel became the model for many other single-sex private schools in the area. Programs and courses,
supported by Mr. Murphy, helped G.C. to become a School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Most recently though,
the International Baccalaureate Program gave a new status to G.C.
Mr. Murphy's concepts of the future of Good Counselled the Board of Directors to elect him as the President of the school in 1993.
The new President/Principal model enabled Mr. Murphy to concentrate more on the fiscal aspects of running a private school.
Both of Mr. Murphy's children graduated from Good Counsel. His daughter, Tracy, was one of the first girls to graduate in 1993.
His son, Brett, graduated this year, 1997. It seemed to be a blending of family and school growth for Mr. Murphy throughout his
history here at Good Counsel for the past thirty years. His familiar face and winning smile will be missed. As we walk the halls of our
school and prosper through the quality of the education offered here, memories of Michael Murphy will remain alive.

110

President

Charles Dusterhoff
Principal
Arriving with the President/Principal Model, Mr. Charles Dusterhoffbecame Good Counsel's Principal in 1993. His professional
career has been devoted to education. Prior to G.C., Mr. Dusterhoff
was a Montgomery County school teacher and counselor. After
his retirement from the county schools, he went on to become the
principal of St. Judes. He always had a close tie to Good Counsel
though, because it was his school of choice for his children. Paul
graduated in 1992 and Alice in 1996.
Mr. Dusterhoff's Christian character richly blessed Good Counsel when he arrived in the fall of 1993. His good nature and warm
smile made him particularly close to the students. In addition to
his responsibilities as principal, he also taught freshman World
History. Always ready for a good challenge, Mr. Dusterhoff oversaw the development and implementation of the International Baccalaureate Program at G.C. This program pushed our school to the
forefront as one of the most progressive private schools in the D.C.
metropolitan area. The challenge did not stop there though, for Mr.
Dusterhoff. Over the past two years, he was involved with the new
block schedule that will be implemented in the fall of 1997. This
schedule will enable G.C. students to take eight courses each year
and offer more flexibility for honor students. Ninety-minute classes will be interesting next year.
Mr. Dusterhoff was a fair man ... someone who always looked out for the kids. Students knew that his office was a friendly place,
a place that could be trusted for fairness and a Christian atmosphere. The faculty and staff also enjoyed working for " Dusty. "
Congratulatory remarks and his support were always evident.
Mr. Dusterhoff leaves Good Counsel this year, along with the Class of 1997. He arrived with this class and rode the wave of
excitement with them for four years. He will be remembered fondly by all. And always remember ... "Danger Stranger" !

Camp Good Counsel is a summer program run by

the school for less privileged youth. Staffed by GC
students and alumni, Camp GC takes place during
the summer, once school is not in session, and allows
the youth to have fun on the summer break. GC students serve as counselors for their children, who are
often rambunctious and active. The program has
been around for a number of years, and has grown
to include over 100 staff members and children. It
was hard work, the counselors agreed, but one of the
most exciting and interesting service opportunities at
GC. The camp allowed students of all grades to work
with children and see the rewards of their hard work
and dedication first-hand.

Moving On:
Senior Retreat

Senior Retreat has traditionally been

one of the highlights of Senior year, and thanks
to the hard work and dedication of Mr. Kiely
and members of the Planning Committee, this
year was no different. Senior Retreat is different
from any other retreat at Good Counsel, not
only because it is held o n the weekend and is
not mandatory, but also because it is planned
and shaped by each class. This year, the
planners decided to create an atmostphere not
unlike the other retreats, with large group
activies and talks by both seniors and teachers,
small groups, and meditations. Included with
these scheduled activites were lots of free ti me,
which students could spend by themselves or

talking with friends. The groups of about I 00

students came to the retreat with open minds
and forgiving spirits, allowing wrongs to be
forgiven and acquaintences to be turned into
friends. The two days the Senior class spent as
a group were its first class activity, the beginning
of the graduation process that would complete
on June I . The hard work of Peter Mannix,
Debbie George, Bob Doyleand others made the
weekend fun and meaningful for the Seniors,
helping them prepare for the changes that
would accompany their fast approaching
graduation from Good Counsel.

Beginning A Spiritual
Journey:

Freshman and Sophomore Retreats

Although not as well known or celebrated as the Junior Retreat at Good Counsel, the Sophomore
and Freshmen retreats begin the journey that will eventually take all students to Sparks, MD, where they
will finish the retreat program with three days on Junior Retreat. Before that though, students must attend
both of these one day retreats, one held at Good Counsel and the other at Holy Family Seminary on
Randolph Road. Like the Junior Retreat everyone looks forward too, these retreats entail group talks
and activities, but unlike Junior Retreats, these only last one day and focus on one type oftopic. For
freshman, most of the day is spent discussing their adjustment to high school and what they hope to
accomplish in the next four years. The sophomores focus their discussions on relationships, especially
those with the people around them. Small group discussion are supplemented by large talks given by
senior leaders. Megan Mechak, a Sophomore Retreat Leader, said "I think the talks are a good idea
becuase we use our experiences when we write them and that way everyone can begin to relate to what
we are saying." In giving talks and meditations, the leaders were able to explain many things, like how
to deal with parents and a new school, to the retreatants. These one day retreats are preparation for the
three day Junior Retreat that would come. In addition to the Senior Leaders,Fr. Mike andMiss Feerick,
along with community moderators spoke about the importance ofvarious relationships in their own lives.

not mandatory, many Seniors attended the
retreat because they knew it would help them

Junior Retreat:
Bringing the Sparks to Life

A group of Juniors prepares to go outside during their

free time. The free moments at Sparks allowed the
students to get to know each other without being
directed in their conversation, and allowed them to
think about the discussions and talks they had heard.

ThefiveJuniorretreats weredeclared
by the participants to be the most successful in
Good Counsel history. These retreats, led by
seniors and teachers, were designed to give the
Junior class insight into both themselves and
the people around them, especially those they
didn't know well. For this reason, moderators
of the two communities going on retreats make
up small groups and assign rooms based on
people that they haven't seen interact, rather
than putting students with their friends .
Through the open attitude of retreat, people
who thought they had nothing in common
soon learned that many experiences at Good
Counsel are shared by all.
The experience of Junior retreat is
shared by all students at school, it being the last
of the mandatory retreats in the program. Yet,

for most students it is a pivotal time in their four

years at GC. Junior retreat is the time when some
ofthe bestfriendsofhigh school are discovered:
The openness of retreat allows students to
share their feelings with people they never
thought would care. This enviornment alJowed
students to share their experiences and
thoughts in a way many thought impossible.
Through looking at themselves without the
distractions ofdaily life, the Juniors were better
able to develop an understanding of who they
were and what they wanted in the next year. The
Seniors and teachers, leading through sharing
their own thoughts in small groups, talks and
meditations, brought their groups of Juniors to
understandings of themselves they never
imagined possible.

Katie Gray and Terry Bykowski have a quiet

time, Juniors sometimes rekindled friendships that had
been forgotten.

Making the
School Year Fun:
The Student Council
At the beginning of this
year, belonging to the Student
Council seemed like it would be
more of an activity on paper than
one that work was to be done
for; this year's President, Drew
Maurano, proved to Good
Counsel that would no longer be
true. He, along with Vice
PresidentTony Ceballos,
Secretary Anna Cheng, and
Treasurer Liz Bates, made this
year's Student Council one of
the most active clubs at Good
Counsel. Beginning with a kickoff picnic for Homecoming, the
Student Council made itself

the entire year. Homecoming
was a tremendous success, with
most of the students participating in Spirit Week, attending the
Homecoming football game and
the Dance, the theme of which
was Wonderful Tonight by Eric
Clapton. As the year progressed, the Student Council
planned a number of dances,
including the Winter Formal and
mixers with other schools. The
success of these activities was
complemented by a number of
other activities, including the
Haunted House. In addition, the
help of the Student Council
made it possible for a number of
other clubs, including the
Political Science Club, to
participate in activities of
interest to their groups.

the Winter Formal, postponed due
to snow, was held. This dance
ends the celebration of winter
sports teams that occurs at the end
of that season, and is like another
Homecoming for most students.
Thanks to the Student Council,
this year's dance was also a Sadie
Hawkins, with the females asking
the males. This worked out well, in
the minds of many men, who were
glad for the break in having to ask
someone.
The numerous mixers
were perhaps the most successful
dances after Homecoming. These
casual dances offered students a
chance to unwind to the sounds of
a number of DJ s, and were hosted
by many different activities. The
Softball team sponsored the
Spring Fling to help pay for its trip
to Myrtle Beach, and the Political
Science hosted concessions at
another to raise money for a trip to
the Model United Nations.

number of dances: this year,

These dances offered students a
chance to enjoy the company of

Graduation

Final Moments
in High School

On June 1, 1997 this year's

class of Seniors completed their
long journey through high school
with a walk across the stage at
Constitution Hall in Washington,
D.C. For many, this was a moment
that had been eagerly awaited for
most of the past year, a moment
that was to be celebrated as the
beginning of a new part of their
lives. The moment lasted for an
hour, as the class listened intently
to Natalie Branagan, the class
speaker as she described their
evolution from a group of people
to a community. Then, in what was
to be his last speech, the class
heardMr. Murphy describe what
lay ahead of them. For many of
these new graduates, the moment
was perhaps the most important in
their lives so far, yet they remained
jubilant in the face of an uncertain
future, chosing to see the chances
they had been given as a class.
The night before, the
Senior class had joined together
with their families and friends to
celebrate one last Mass. With
readings and prayers by Monica
Welker and AJ Finch,among
others, the Mass was a celebration
of the past four years. Ending with
the Prayer of the Graduates,
written and led byDrew Maurano,
the Mass served as a completion
of the four years the Class of 1997
spent as a community.

Debbie George, Monica Welker,

and Megan Mechak wait to march into
Constitution Hall on June I. Leaving GC
also meant leaving friends who had
become more like family.

Kate Loewe lights a candle at the National Honor Society's Spring induction. Although many people thought the NHS was simply a club
in name, it was active throughout the school on a number of occasions, including Open House.

Drew Maurano, President of the Student Council, discusses the important issues of the school
community with his staff. The Student Council planned and hosted many of the events at GC.

Right: Although treatments for her cancer took up

much of her ti me, Becca never stopped being a
teenager. She and Justin Smith prepare to attend the
Winter Formal.

Above: Becca Lilly as she appeared on the cover of

the Washington Post's Health section. The Health
section chronicled Becca's struggle with cancer and her
unique choice of treatments.
Left: Becca works with preschoolers at St. Andrew's
School, near GC. As pan of her cirriculum at GC, she
would volunteer with the children several mornings
each week she could.

Above: Once Becca returned home from the last of
her cancer treatments, her friends were frequent visitors to the Lilly home. Here, Megan McArdle reads
from a favorite story.
Right: Becca and her family celebrate her sixteenth
birthday with a party.

The Faleon Yearbook

would like to thank
Mr. Jim Parcell,
Washington Post
photographer, for the
pictures that appear
on these two pages.

1980-1997

"I have known Becca for about eleven years.

So, after countless games, slices of pizza, after hundreds
of songs and hugs, I want to tell you how lucky I am to
be Becca's friend. It's funny when you grow up with
someone because you can look back and see how
they've changed- and how they haven' t. Becca and I
have grown from playing "dress-up" and "house" to
actually dressing up for Homecomings and FatherDaughter Dances. Our games with dolls were eventually
replaced with all the little children Becca loved and
cared for. We grew from playing intermurals on
Saturday morning to winning the championship on
Mrs. Berry's eighth grade girls' basketball team. We
grew from being little first graders wandering the
hallways of St. Bernadette ' s to high school juniors
receiving our class rings.
Yet somethings didn't change- her love for
children, stuffed animals, dogs and bats, her ability to
memorize almost every song on the radio. And
Whether we were on a team or not, we loved playing
"horse" or "pig" or kicking a soccer ball around. Some
things do stay the same- her love for life and her ability
to make people smile.

And although a large part of her growing

involved cancer, it wasn' t the first thing you noticed
about Becca. It dido 't keep her from the things and
people she loved. I remember one time this year we
were at lunch, talking and laughing with friends like
normal. Towards the end of the period, she leaned over
and said to me, "Oh, I almost forgot. I have to have
surgery again." A couple of minutes later, she was
walking down the hall, smiling and joking with everyone.
And that was Becca- roll with the punches. She had
more important things to concentrate on- her family,
friends, and ever-busy schedule.
I think it's funny that my mom was one of
Becca's teacher. Because Becca was one of my teachers.
I learned so much from her. I learned how to blow
bubbles out of the back of a station wagon and make
funny faces at the people driving behind us. I learned
how to "double dip" with the people at Camp Fantastic.
I learned that if you're spending the night at the Lilly's
and you feel something sitting on you in the middle of
the night- don' t worry, it's just the cat. . I learned that
if I had an MRI with my braces, I would get stuck to the
roof of the machine. I learned that you can never have

too much ice cream, and it doesn't have to be Christmas

to practice singing Christmas carols. But I really
learned a lot more.
I learned that a smile is one of the best gifts
you can give. Hugs are good, too. I learned that
memories are our most precious possessions. I learned
a selfless grace that placed other people's problems
before her own, no matter how big or smaller. I learned
a love for life, while experiencing its fragility. I learned
her quiet strength, grim determination, dauntless
cheerfulness. I learned courage and bravery too
immense to be measured.
A lot of people have heros. A lot of heros
are adults. A lot of heros are famous or celebrities. But
very few people have a friend who is also their hero.
I do. So Becca- "Did you ever know that you're my
hero? You're everything I wish I could be. And I could
fly higher than an eagle, if you are the wind beneath
my wings. Thank you, thank you, thank God for you,
the wind beneath my wings." We love you Becca."

In Memory of Rebecca Lilly

And now it's time to say good-bye...

The creation of this yearbook has, in fact,
taken three years. As a sophomore, I took over as
editor-in-chief and have been in that position ever
since. The past three years have been a constant
struggle with this monster. I would like to thank Mrs.
Schoemaker, Ms . Kyser, and Mr. Essig, who
shared all they knew and put up with my often inept
knowledge of publishing a yearbook. I would also like
to thank Monica Welker, Tara Nattrass, and
Colleen Nattrass, without whom I would have had
208 blank pages and a boring year. Thank you to the
entire student body for help in filling up this book
through your activites and sports.
