PART-1
Dear Student, Firstly Control the random dynamic response of your heart beat and mind
and make those to respond in Steady State. Read the Question carefully and answer with common
sense.
Answer any four questions.

4*15M=60M

1. Find the forces acting on each floor of an in-fill framed 04 storey building above ground level,
which is resting in Zone-V on soft soil and each storey height is 3.6m. The building consists of 2
bays in both horizontal directions (say x, y).The bay length is 3.5m and 4m in X & Y directions
respectively. Consider density of concrete as 25 kN/m3 & In-fill as 18 kN/m3.
Columns size 0.3 m*0.4m, Beams size 0.25m*0.3m, Thickness of slab 0.15m.
Assume the building as educational building and assume necessary data required as per IS Codes
and clearly mention the assumed values.
(15M-40min)
2. a. Derive an expression for the steady state response of a Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF)
system with damping under P1 Sin (1 t) + P2 Cos (2 t) loading?
(9M-max.25 min)
b. Find the natural frequency of the system shown in Figure: 1
(6M-15 min)

3. a. Find the acceleration transferred from the base to the system of mass which is connected to
the base by a spring of stiffness K and damping C when ground is displaced by Y = Y0 COS( t).
Explain briefly how the transmissibility changes with damping, with the help of rough plot? (8M15 min)
b. Design a suspension system for a Volvo XC60 high end luxurious car of weight 1900kg and 4
setter capacity, consider the max. Weight of person as 90 kgs. To provide the max comfort it is
tested on a rough road which is idealized as sine-wave represented as A*Sin (Lt). Where L is wave
length 2.4m and A is amplitude 50 mm. The max testing speed is 80 kmph. The max acceleration
that can transfer is 0.05g.Assume damping as zero. (7M (10 R+ 10 solve) min).
4. a. Design an Accelerometer when ground is displaced by Y = y0 Sin ( t). Properly explain the values
of Values considering from the plots with sketches. (6M-10 min).
b. Write the Equation of motion for Multi-degree freedom system by considering xi as the relative
displacement of the i th mass (mi ) w.r.t ground at that instant (i.e, from displaced position of
base) in the direction opposite to the ground motion, when the ground is displaced by Xg from its

c. Find the log-decrement after 4 cycles for a SDOF system for which damping ratio is 0.1 and
natural frequency is 6 Hz. (3M-5 min)

5. Explain the effect of damping in case of SDOF systems in free and forced vibration with the help
of mathematical equations and physical interpretation and of rough plots?
(15M -25 min)
6. a. Derive the solution for a SDOF system under ramp loading, clearly describe the ramp loading
function (8M-20 min).
b. Explain the Phenomena of vibration control of a SDOF system by adding on more mass over the
top and with the help of mathematical equations (7M-15 min).
