The New Orleans Class

Frigate
An Early Ancestor to the Galaxy Class
By:

Commodore Ken Tyrell

Commander - 5th Strike Group

The New Orleans class frigate was created in response to the lack of serious scientific capabilities of the
Steamrunner class, as well as the extreme expense of the Ambassador class heavy cruiser. The New Orleans would
provide better scientific and exploration capabilities than the Steamrunner, but be inexpensive enough the be
procurred in numbers far greater than the Ambassador.
GENERAL APPEARANCE

The New Orleans class was both a successor to the Ambassador and a precursor to the Nebula and Galaxy
classes in design. Both the saucer and engineering sections share a distinct similarity to those used on those two
classes, as do the warp nacelles.
PROPULSION AND POWER SYSTEMS

The New Orleans class mounts the Leeding Energies LF-30 warp drive, the latest iteration of the original
LF-10 developed for the Ambassador. The Kloratis FIG-3 impulse drive system was also fitted.
TACTICAL SYSTEMS

A controversial decision was to not mount any photon torpedo launchers on this vessel, instead relying
on seven Type IX phasers for offensive punch. This was decided due to the fact that too much internal space
would have to be dedicated to torpedo launching mechanisms and storage, impacting on the scientific suite. As
things were quiet at the time, and such vessels were not designed to operate on the extreme frontier, the
tradeoff was considered acceptable. The FSP shield system and TACAR fire-control system from the Ambassador
class were fitted.
COMPUTER SYSTEM

The New Orleans carries the M-13 isolinear computer system. A significant improvement on the M-12
Duotronic unit, it packs more processing power and storage capacity in the same space. The new system uses
isolinear optical chips composed of linear memory crystal material. This new technology is expected to replace
duotronic-based computers in all new starship and computer systems.
SHIPS FACILITIES

The New Orleans class has facilities similar to those of the Ambassador class, but with a smaller crew size
of 460. Scientific and sensor systems are the equal of the Ambassador, with minor improvements made over the
intervening years between the two ships.
DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION HISTORY

The U.S.S. New Orleans and her sisters started to enter Fleet service in 2335, roughly in concert with the
U.S.S. Steamrunner. In 2356, the Federation went to war with the Cardassian Union. At this time, the lack of a
photon torpedo launcher became a significant liability to the New Orleans class, which suddenly found themselves
unable to defend themselves against Cardiassian ships equipped with such weapons. All New Orleans vessels
were immediately withdrawn from areas of conflict and redistributed in more safer areas of the Federation.

1005

However, it was immediately obvious that this situation could not be tolerated. The ships phaser and
shielding were equal to the Ambassador class, which was deeply involved in Fleet operations against the
Cardassians. The ASDB convened a special design team to determine how to add photon torpedo launchers to
the New Orleans class as fast as possible.
In two months of round-the-clock meetings, the team figured out a way to mount three of the new Mk 80
photon torpedo launchers in special bolt-on tubes to the ship. Two were placed on top of the saucer, and a
third placed underneath the secondary hull. The result turned the New Orleans into one of the most powerful
combat vessels available. Launchers were immediately built and all of the ships were sent to the yards for
modification. This process took about a month and the ships were then deployed to the front lines with groups
of Steamrunner class ships.
CONCLUSION

The new photon torpedo launchers greatly improved the combat effectiveness of the New Orleans class
while sacrificing none of her scientific and exploratory capabilities. The initial ships modified suffered some
minor reductions in top speed and maneuverability due to stresses imposed on the mounting brackets and the
effect of the pods on the ships warp dynamics. All ships in the yard were modified to mount the launchers more
securely, and improvements in the Structural Integrity Field generators have eliminated the maneuverability
issue, though top speed is now .2 warp factor lower. A total of two-hundred and fifty New Orleans class starships
are planned between 2330 and 2365.

Commodore Tyrell is the commander of the 5th Strike Group, and was the first group to receive New
Orleans class frigates.

The Saber Class Scout-Escort

Modular Construction Pays Big Rewards

By:

Captain Mturr
Commanding Officer - Starship U.S.S. Yeager * NCC-61947

Starfleets emphasis on new ships in the early twenty-fourth century was on large explorers and, later,
mid-to-large cruisers and destroyers. Smaller escort duties were handled by the older Miranda class ships.
However, these vessels were pretty much outmatched by Orion and Klingon pirate forces, requiring the
assignment of Excelsior and Steamrunner class ships to escort duties on the more important convoys.
While this insured the protection of the convoys, it also cost a great deal of money. Therefore, a new
class of small escorts was needed to provide convoy security, patrol of trade routes, and defense of important
trading zones.
The Saber class had recently entered service as a scoutship. The SSDAC and ASDB quickly came to the
conclusion that the Saber would also make an excellent escort platform, saving the development costs of a new
class and providing ships far sooner.
GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Saber class is one of the smallest vessels in general Fleet service. The vessel is also highly modular in
nature. This allows smaller independent shipyards to fabricate the major subassemblies, which are then shipped
to a larger Starfleet facility for final assembly. The independent yards have entered into a fierce battle to offer the
most competitive advantage, resulting in significant cost savings as well as improved construction and delivery
times.
PROPULSION AND POWER SYSTEMS
The Saber class was fitted with the LF-25 warp drive, a smaller and more efficient version of the LF-20
used on the Steamrunner and FIG-2 impulse system. The result is a vessel capable of high speeds and extended
duration both important for the duties she was developed to perform.
TACTICAL SYSTEMS
As an escort, the Saber class needed to be well-armed. As such she carries four of the new Type X phaser
emitters developed for the Galaxy class, as well as two Mk 75 photon torpedo launchers. The FSP shield system
provides exceptional fire-dissipation rates, allowing the ship to stand-to and hammer it out with far larger
vessels.
COMPUTER SYSTEM
Trying to fit the M-13 Isolinear computer system core into the Saber class proved quite a problem. However,
the tactical and propulsion systems required this model. They were finally able to do so, but a great deal of
storage capability has been removed to allow the core to fit in the space alotted. This is not considered a problem,
however, as the ships computing storage needs are minimal. The lack of extensive data storage does limit her
usefulness as a scout, however.
SHIPS FACILITIES
The facilities for the Sabre class are considered adequate for her role. They are quite small compared to
her larger sisters, but they are still comfortable. Amenities such as personal replicators have been removed, the
crew sharing a meal in one of two large messhalls. The Saber class was designed to carry up to 200 people in

1009

emergency situations, though the quarters are little larger than a bed and a set of chairs.
DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION HISTORY
The Saber class entered service in 2343 and production plans call for ten vessels a year to be built at
various shipyards. Due to the modular nature of the design, Starfleet has been awarding most of the contracts to
independent yards, freeing up the Fleet yards for the larger Cheyenne and Steamrunner classes.

Captain Mturr is the Commanding Officer of the Saber class U.S.S. Yeager.
