Bronopol does not accumulate in the environment and has
been shown to be inherently biodegradable. Under normal use
conditions, Bronopol will not cause problems either to effluent
treatment plants or to the environment following discharge into
wastewater. Bronopol is toxic to algae and daphnia but less
toxic to fish. The log POW is low, indicating that Bronopol has a
low potential to bioaccumulate. In the E.U., Bronopol is
classified as dangerous for the environment (R50).

Environmental Profile

Protectol GA 24 / Protectol GA 50
Glutaraldehyde has been shown to be readily biodegradable
and has a low potential to bioaccumulate. Under normal use
conditions, Glutaraldehyde will not cause problems either to
effluent treatment plants or to the environment following
discharge into wastewater. Glutaraldehyde is harmful to fish
and daphnia but is very toxic to algae.
Protectol DA

Protectol TD

2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is of low to moderate acute toxicity

to daphnia and fish and is of low acute toxicity to birds.
2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is not classified as dangerous to
the aquatic environment.

Aseptrol

Dazomet is readily biodegradable. Under normal use conditions,

Dazomet will not cause problems either to effluent treatment
plants or to the environment following discharge into wastewater.
Dazomet has, however, been shown to be very toxic to fish and
daphnia but is less toxic to algae.

Protectol DB

Protectol DZ

When used as recommended, tetramethylolacetylene diurea will

cause no inhibition of activated sludge in sewage treatment plants.

Protectol TD

Protectol PE / Protectol PE S

Protectol DB

Aseptrol Chlorine Dioxide Technology

Phenoxyethanol is readily biodegradable. Experience gained in

running effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has
shown that concentrations of up to 1000mg/l are unlikely to
disturb the efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxyethanol is of a
low acute toxicity to fish and daphnia.

Dibromonitrilopropionamide generally hydrolyses rapidly in water

through aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. It is of moderate
toxicity to terrestrial mammals and birds if they are exposed
orally to concentrated doses but under usual circumstances,
dietary toxicity to birds is low. Without any mitigation measures,
DBNPA poses a high risk to aquatic organisms. In the E.U., it is
classified as dangerous for the environment with risk phrase; R50
- very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Aseptrol products are a new addition to BASFs biocide range

and feature a unique and patented technology, which enables
the controlled release of chlorine dioxide into air or water from
a powder, dissolving tablet or sachet. Aseptrol products are
specially engineered with proprietary activators that combine
with chlorite salt to generate chlorine dioxide gas at precise
rates and in controlled concentrations, whenever in contact
with water or moisture in the air.

Protectol KD

Aseptrol products can be used to control a broad range of

microorganisms, viruses, spores, protozoan cysts and biofilm
deposits in several applications. Typical examples include hard
surface, dental, hospital and animal house disinfection, industrial
cooling water, odour control, pools, spas and emergency
drinking water.

Protectol PP
Phenoxypropanol is biodegradable. Experience gained in running
effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has shown that
concentrations of up to 2000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the
efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxypropanol is of low toxicity to
fish and daphnia but it is harmful to algae. Phenoxypropanol is not
likely to bioaccumulate due to a low log POW.

N-cyclohexyl-diazenium dioxide, potassium salt, is readily

eliminated from water. Under normal use conditions, inhibition
of degradation activity in activated sludge is not expected when
the product is correctly introduced at low concentrations.

Protectol HT
1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is readily
biodegradable. However, under normal use conditions, the
product should not be discharged into waterways without prior
treatment.1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is
harmful to fish and daphnids.

Protectol FM 85 / Protectol FM 99
Formic acid is readily biodegradable. Under normal use conditions,
inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not
expected when the product is correctly introduced at low
concentrations. Because of a low log POW value, bioaccumulation
in organisms is not expected.

Protectol DF
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is moderately biodegradable. Under
normal use conditions, inhibition of degradation activity in
activated sludge is not expected when the product is correctly
introduced at low concentrations. In acute studies,
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is not harmful to fish.
Protectol GL
Glyoxal is readily biodegradable. Effluent discharge into sewage
treatment plants has shown that concentrations of up to
1000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the efficacy of activated sludge.
In acute studies, Glyoxal is not hazardous to algae, daphnia or
fish. A low octanol / water coefficient also indicates a low
potential to bioaccumulate.

Aseptrol Chlorine Dioxide Technology

Phenoxyethanol is readily biodegradable. Experience gained in

running effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has
shown that concentrations of up to 1000mg/l are unlikely to
disturb the efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxyethanol is of a
low acute toxicity to fish and daphnia.

Dibromonitrilopropionamide generally hydrolyses rapidly in water

through aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. It is of moderate
toxicity to terrestrial mammals and birds if they are exposed
orally to concentrated doses but under usual circumstances,
dietary toxicity to birds is low. Without any mitigation measures,
DBNPA poses a high risk to aquatic organisms. In the E.U., it is
classified as dangerous for the environment with risk phrase; R50
- very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Aseptrol products are a new addition to BASFs biocide range

and feature a unique and patented technology, which enables
the controlled release of chlorine dioxide into air or water from
a powder, dissolving tablet or sachet. Aseptrol products are
specially engineered with proprietary activators that combine
with chlorite salt to generate chlorine dioxide gas at precise
rates and in controlled concentrations, whenever in contact
with water or moisture in the air.

Protectol KD

Aseptrol products can be used to control a broad range of

microorganisms, viruses, spores, protozoan cysts and biofilm
deposits in several applications. Typical examples include hard
surface, dental, hospital and animal house disinfection, industrial
cooling water, odour control, pools, spas and emergency
drinking water.

Protectol PP
Phenoxypropanol is biodegradable. Experience gained in running
effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has shown that
concentrations of up to 2000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the
efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxypropanol is of low toxicity to
fish and daphnia but it is harmful to algae. Phenoxypropanol is not
likely to bioaccumulate due to a low log POW.

N-cyclohexyl-diazenium dioxide, potassium salt, is readily

eliminated from water. Under normal use conditions, inhibition
of degradation activity in activated sludge is not expected when
the product is correctly introduced at low concentrations.

Protectol HT
1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is readily
biodegradable. However, under normal use conditions, the
product should not be discharged into waterways without prior
treatment.1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is
harmful to fish and daphnids.

Protectol FM 85 / Protectol FM 99
Formic acid is readily biodegradable. Under normal use conditions,
inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not
expected when the product is correctly introduced at low
concentrations. Because of a low log POW value, bioaccumulation
in organisms is not expected.

Protectol DF
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is moderately biodegradable. Under
normal use conditions, inhibition of degradation activity in
activated sludge is not expected when the product is correctly
introduced at low concentrations. In acute studies,
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is not harmful to fish.
Protectol GL
Glyoxal is readily biodegradable. Effluent discharge into sewage
treatment plants has shown that concentrations of up to
1000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the efficacy of activated sludge.
In acute studies, Glyoxal is not hazardous to algae, daphnia or
fish. A low octanol / water coefficient also indicates a low
potential to bioaccumulate.

BASF is one of the worlds leading

suppliers of speciality biocides.
As part of the Care Chemicals & Formulators
division, the biocide group provides
marketing, regulatory and global technical
services to support the sale of biocides via
BASFs network of international sales offices
and the BTC Speciality Chemical distribution
organisation in Europe. Regional marketing
centres are also established in NAFTA,
South America and Asia.

BASF offers a strong and effective range of biocidal active ingredients

marketed under the Protectol trade name. These biocides can
be formulated to add value to a wide range of industrial and
consumer products and processes through the control of harmful
and unwanted micro-organisms. With our technical expertise and
application know-how, our biocides can preserve, protect,
enhance performance and improve process efficiency.

Application areas
Household & Personal Care
In personal care and household products our antimicrobial
chemistries and preservatives offer high performance, cost
effective solutions. They ensure that the final products are
protected from contamination and are safe to use on the skin
whilst maintaining product stability and compatibility.
Pulp & Paper
In paper making, our biocides are used to control slime build-up
in the process water. This ensures that the paper mill machinery
runs efficiently and the subsequent finished paper is free from
contamination and spoilage. In addition, we supply specialised
products to protect water-based mill additives such as starch,
pigments, sizes and mineral slurries.
Odour Control & Chemical Sanitation
Our biocides control odour in portable toilet fluids, animal litter
formulations and many other niche applications. Our products
are chosen for their excellent biocidal activity and ability to help
control the generation of noxious and unpleasant odours.
Superior biodegradability of our biocides also minimises
environmental impact.
Disinfection
We offer fast acting, effective biocidal ingredients used in the
formulation of disinfection and sanitizer products for hard
surfaces, medical instruments, cleaners and animal husbandry
applications.
Metal Working Fluids
Our biocides are easily incorporated into all types of metal
working fluid concentrates. They are extremely effective at
controlling microorganisms within the diluted matrix helping to
prevent malodours and fluid degradation. In addition, fluids can
enjoy secondary benefits such as enhanced solvent properties
and extended buffering.

Industrial Product Preservation

In this wide-ranging application area our products offer biocidal
performance when used either alone or in combination with
other actives. Applications include the preservation of water-based
paints, polymer dispersions, inks, fountain solutions, adhesives,
caulks, sealants and many other industrial fluids. Our biocides
can also be used in leather soak liquors to protect hides and
skins from blemishes caused by bacterial attack. Further uses
include formulations sold with cut flowers to keep them fresh
and free from bacterial contamination.
Oilfield
In oilfield applications BASFs biocides can be used in drilling
muds, injection waters, fracturing and completion fluids. They
are often added to production waters to prevent microbial
spoilage within the oil recovery process and to control souring
and corrosion caused by sulphate reducing bacteria.

Phenoxyethanol is readily biodegradable. Experience gained in

running effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has
shown that concentrations of up to 1000mg/l are unlikely to
disturb the efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxyethanol is of a
low acute toxicity to fish and daphnia.

Dibromonitrilopropionamide generally hydrolyses rapidly in water

through aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. It is of moderate
toxicity to terrestrial mammals and birds if they are exposed
orally to concentrated doses but under usual circumstances,
dietary toxicity to birds is low. Without any mitigation measures,
DBNPA poses a high risk to aquatic organisms. In the E.U., it is
classified as dangerous for the environment with risk phrase; R50
- very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Aseptrol products are a new addition to BASFs biocide range

and feature a unique and patented technology, which enables
the controlled release of chlorine dioxide into air or water from
a powder, dissolving tablet or sachet. Aseptrol products are
specially engineered with proprietary activators that combine
with chlorite salt to generate chlorine dioxide gas at precise
rates and in controlled concentrations, whenever in contact
with water or moisture in the air.

Protectol KD

Aseptrol products can be used to control a broad range of

microorganisms, viruses, spores, protozoan cysts and biofilm
deposits in several applications. Typical examples include hard
surface, dental, hospital and animal house disinfection, industrial
cooling water, odour control, pools, spas and emergency
drinking water.

Protectol PP
Phenoxypropanol is biodegradable. Experience gained in running
effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has shown that
concentrations of up to 2000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the
efficacy of activated sludge. Phenoxypropanol is of low toxicity to
fish and daphnia but it is harmful to algae. Phenoxypropanol is not
likely to bioaccumulate due to a low log POW.

N-cyclohexyl-diazenium dioxide, potassium salt, is readily

eliminated from water. Under normal use conditions, inhibition
of degradation activity in activated sludge is not expected when
the product is correctly introduced at low concentrations.

Protectol HT
1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is readily
biodegradable. However, under normal use conditions, the
product should not be discharged into waterways without prior
treatment.1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is
harmful to fish and daphnids.

Protectol FM 85 / Protectol FM 99
Formic acid is readily biodegradable. Under normal use conditions,
inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not
expected when the product is correctly introduced at low
concentrations. Because of a low log POW value, bioaccumulation
in organisms is not expected.

Protectol DF
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is moderately biodegradable. Under
normal use conditions, inhibition of degradation activity in
activated sludge is not expected when the product is correctly
introduced at low concentrations. In acute studies,
Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran is not harmful to fish.
Protectol GL
Glyoxal is readily biodegradable. Effluent discharge into sewage
treatment plants has shown that concentrations of up to
1000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the efficacy of activated sludge.
In acute studies, Glyoxal is not hazardous to algae, daphnia or
fish. A low octanol / water coefficient also indicates a low
potential to bioaccumulate.
