Death Mongring Trawlers of Karachi

Take this morning near Clifton Underpass: This is a typical trawler you can see on
the roads of Karachi, Pakistan. In this case, an APL container is being driven on this
trawler and the way it has been placed on the deck, it can easily scare you if you
happen to be on the left side of the vehicle. Recently, in July 2006, we had two
major accidents in Karachi where such trawlers couldn't keep their balance and their
loads came to ground.

Attempt to smuggle flour by UN vehicle foiled
By Saleem Shahid

Sources said that the driver and other people travelling with him escaped after the
accident.

The WFP officials, when contacted by the FC authorities in Islamabad, said they did not
know anything about flour smuggling and denied that the WFP was involved in the affair.

They said the foodstuff was loaded in Karachi under the supervision of WFP officials,
adding that the UN agency legally supplied wheat to Afghanistan and not flour.

According to the sources, initial investigation showed that the driver and some WFP staff
might be involved in the illegal practice because opening and re-sealing the container was
not a difficult task. “The container can be re-sealed in Quetta after loading it with flour,” they
said.

The matter has been referred to the provincial food department, the sources told Dawn,
adding that owner of the flour mill would be interrogated.

The officials were also trying to know where the edible oil and sugar mentioned in the WFP
invoice had gone.

The sources said the government had decided to let the FC personnel randomly check
WFP trailers carrying supplies to Afghanistan.

QUETTA, June 7: The Frontier Corps personnel on Saturday seized a UN vehicle near
Shella Bagh area in the Qila Abdullah district, foiling an attempt to smuggle a large
quantity of flour to Afghanistan.

The trailer was being used by the World Food Programme for supplying sugar and edible
oil for refugees in Afghanistan.
“The FC personnel have recovered 200 tons of flour from a trailer sealed under the WFP
invoice,” which, officials said, showed edible oil and sugar were being taken to
Afghanistan and not flour.
Sources said that the driver and other people travelling with him escaped after the
accident.

Couple, two sons killed in road tragedy
By Tahir Siddiqui

KARACHI, July 23: A 48-year-old man, his doctor wife and their two sons
were killed on Thursday when a truck towing a containermounted trailer
overturned and crushed their stationary car near the ICI bridge
intersection, witnesses and police said.

The witnesses said that the truck (AP-5369), coming from the Jinnah
bridge and moving in its high-speed lane, mounted the traffic island and
rammed into an electric pole before it overturned and its empty container
landed on the grey Honda City car (AFT-360), killing all its occupants.

The crash also uprooted the electric pole.

They said that the fastmoving trailer overturned after its driver lost control
of his heavy vehicle in a bid to avoid a pothole on the road and the
container fell on the victims’ car, which was halted at the intersection and
waiting for the traffic policeman’s signal to move ahead.

Adam Khan Leghari, an MBA from the United States with landholding in
Hyderabad, along with his sons, Mohammed Saris Leghari, 12, and
Mohammed Ahmed Leghari, 8, was going to drop his wife, Dr Asma
Leghari, to her workplace, a government dispensary at Mauripur, when
the family met with the fatal accident.

The truck driver, identified as Abdul Shakoor, son of Mohammed Hussain,

immediately fled the scene. However, the police arrested him at a nearby
place on a tip-off.

A large number of people gathered at the spot as two forklift trucks raised
the heavy container and the smashed car was dragged from under it.
Later, heavy equipment was pressed into service to clear the road of the
overturned vehicle as thousands of vehicles, queued for miles, crawled at
a snail’s pace on the main Mauripur road for an hour.
