Global Innovation Initiative

Strengthening global research through multilateral partnerships
The Global Innovation Initiative (GII) is a shared commitment of the United Kingdom and the United States
to support multilateral research collaboration between universities in the UK, US and designated countries.
GII will fund grants to university consortia focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM)-related issues of worldwide significance. The initiative is funded by the British Council, the
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the US Department of State.
Goals of the Global Innovation Initiative
To increase the global mobility of students, researcher, faculty and higher education
administrators from the UK, US and the selected countries;
To develop a cadre of people in the UK, US and selected countries who have the international
experience, outlook and knowledge to confront global challenges and operate in a global
context;

To encourage international collaborations that develop capacity across a range of universities in

the UK, the US, and the selected countries; and
To forge university and business linkages which support a globally mobile talent pool and a
multinational base for the exchange of discovery and innovation.

Priority Areas
The following themes are priority areas for the competition, and applications must be submitted in one of the
following categories:

Energy, environment and climate change

Urban development
Agriculture, food security and water
Global health

Interdisciplinary approaches to the research proposal, including the humanities and social sciences, are
welcomed provided that the research foundation lies within STEM disciplines.
Grant Opportunities
The Global Innovation Initiative will provide grant support for multilateral research collaboration among
higher education institutions in the UK, the US and designated countries. The grants ranging from 100,000
to 150,000 will support multi-year collaborations that foster cutting-edge multinational research and
strengthen institutional partnerships. Two parallel but separate grant competitions will be offered in the UK
and US and will require at least one higher education institution from the UK, US, and an institution from at
least one designated country to apply together. Partners with a UK lead institution will apply to the UK
competition, and those with a US lead institution will apply to the US competition. The grant competition for
both countries will open on August 18, 2014 and close on 31 October 2014. The British Council will
administer the UK competition and the Institute of International Education will administer the US competition.
Designated Countries
Global Innovation Initiative grants are intended to bring mutual benefit to higher education institutions
through the enhancement of existing bilateral ties and the development of trilateral relationships with
emerging economies. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the US Department of State
have identified the following four emerging economies as selected countries for the Global Innovation
Initiative: Brazil, China, India and Indonesia.
