Production benefits of
WMA with Sasobit
Production benefits:
Lower production temperatures lead to less fumes, lower emissions
Lower energy consumption can lead to lower overall costs
Lower exposure of the bitumen to heat and thus a lower oxidation which could lead to a
longer road lifetime

International Case studies

Frankfurt airport in Germany
Objective: To pave the entire northern airstrip (4000 meters long and 60 m wide) without
stopping any air traffic. (This meant airstrip could only be closed from 22h00 at night to 06h00)
Thus:

Work could only be carried out during the night and it had to be asphalt
It had to be a warm mix asphalt due to the above constraints

International Case studies

Frankfurt airport in Germany (contd.)
The building contract stipulated a paving temperature of 125OC. The airport was
paved in sections and the asphalt needed to be about 100OC immediately after
paving.
No workability problems were observed even at these low temperatures and the
project was completed with no incidents reported over the 300 night (1500 tons per
night paved).
Little or no fumes observed as seen in below picture

CRRI evaluation of Sasobit
Objective: Concluded to evaluate the effect of Sasobit on the overall
properties of a 60/70 bitumen
Sasobit was mixed at various concentrations from 2.5 to 4.0% of binder%
The mix design was completed using the Marshall method and 3%
Sasobit selected.

Changes with Sasobit observed in the bitumen.

a) Mix compacted easily at 120OC
b) Penetration of the bitumen decreased as expected
c) Softening point increased significantly
d) Ductility and elasticity decreased as expected
e) Viscosity significantly decreased as expected.
IRC, New Delhi 20.10.2014

17

Indian development work

CRRI evaluation of Sasobit
Asphalt performance results with Sasobit at 3% addition and paved at
120OC:
a) No changes in Retained stability
b) No changes in Tensile strength ratios
c) No changes in Dynamic creep and a slight increase in Fatigue
resistance
d) Increase Rutting resistance as expected
e) Emissions dramatically decreased overall, while in some case up to
75% with the lower simulated paving temperatures

Indian development work

CRRI & IIT Roorkee
Objective: Effect of Sasobit on Viscosity and Rheology of Bituminous Binders

Conclusions:
Viscosity of Sasobit warm mix asphalt is higher at lower temperatures and reduces considerably
at higher temperatures, which is desirable.
It was observed that at 100oC the Sasobit increased the viscosity of the binder as its melting point
is between 85oC to 115oC and beyond 100oC it reduces the viscosity of binder to a greater extent
up till 155oC.
Other properties of bitumen are also found to be improving.
Sasobit modified binder showed better Storage Modulus (G) and Loss Modulus (G) values
between the temperature range of 40oC 88oC which concludes to the increased stiffness of the
binder as well as better viscous response of the binder in that temperature range.
Improved phase angle and complex modulus values were achieved after addition of Sasobit to the
binder.
It shows better resistance to the permanent deformation of the mix as compared to the mix
prepared by neat VG 30 binder

Indian development work

IIT-Guwahati (Mix Design)
Objective: The study was completed to determine the effect of 1% Sasobit on
modified binders:
Modified binders used PMB 70 and CRMB 55
Various simulated paving temperatures used to determine optimum performance

Results:
a) Up to 30 degrees below normal practice all design parameter requirements met
b) Higher bulk densities and Marshall stability observed
c) As expected the lower the temperature the lower the bulk density and Marshall
stability, but this still met specifications.
d) The lower the paving temperatures the higher the air voids but they still met
requirements and specifications.

Indian development work

IIT-Bombay (RAP with Sasobit)
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the suitability of recycled mix containing high percentage of RAP
using Sasobit Wax (Organic paraffin wax) as a rejuvenating agent.
To determine the maximum percentage of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)
that can be incorporate in recycled mix using Sasobit Wax without compromising
in the structural performance of the mix
Performance evaluation and comparison of recycled WMA and virgin HMA mix in
terms of rutting, fatigue with the help of IRC: 37-2001 distress models and
moisture susceptibility by Indirect Tensile Strength test.

Amongst the Conclusions:

According to this study 62% RAP can easily be incorporate with the help of Sasobit
wax in recycled asphalt mix without compromising in structural performance of
pavement
