About Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram is a tourist destination situated in Tamil Nadu, which has many beautiful places.
It is known for its historical monuments, sculptures, scenic beauty, culture and tradition.
Mahabalipuram is placed along the Coromandel Coast facing the Bay of Bengal. It is an
attractive tourist spot.

History of Mahabalipuram
The name Mahabalipuram is derived from a myth. The place was ruled by a very arrogant and
cruel king named Mahabali who was later killed by Lord Vishnu and this place is named after
that King Mahabali.
The Gupta dynasty declined and Pallavas rose to power in south India and ruled for quite some
time. The period between 650 AD and 750 AD was called as the golden age of Pallavas and
they were powerful and intelligent thinkers. During their rule, great poets, saints, artisans,
scholars, artists and dramatists emerged in the region.
Mahabalipuram has unique and beautiful sculptures and paintings, which reflect the talent and
skill artisans from the era possessed. Their creativity and innovation can be seen in the best
possible form as they explored new styles and innovations eliciting the best in art and
architecture. Mahabalipuram is not only known for its architecture, but also known for its
casuarinas trees and silver sand beach. These attractions are an integral part of
Mahabalipuram tourism.

Things to do in Mahabalipuram
The Pallavas did not expose their creations, as they were not exposed to the outer world and
were kept hidden until the late 185th century. Mahabalipuram has temples made out of a single
rock, temples of different structures and artistic bas-reliefs, which is the largest in the world. The
great architecture is a delight to the visitors even today and attracts devotees from far off
places. Mahabalipuram has two low hills whose either sides have excavates temples called
Mandapas. It has unique architecture with different sculptures (Nandi, Lion and Elephant),
rathas (cut out temples) and a palace.
One of the prominent festivals celebrated here is the Mamallapuram Dance Festival, which is
organised by the Department of Tourism every year at the ancient 7th century Centre for
Pallava Culture and Arts. As part of the festival, various dance forms are showcased including
Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali and Odissi. There is a lot more to Mahabalipuram tourism
and travellers can explore history by opting for Mahabalipuram holiday packages.

Featured review about Mahabalipuram

Calm soothing serene
"Mahabalipuram is an ancient developed town by Pallavas dynasty , located in the
Kancheepuram district of Tamilnadu.
The beauty of this destination lies in its sea shore. If you are a nature lover and sea or beaches
crave your holiday moods, then it's a must visit.
The right time is to go from October to March, so that you can avoid the extreme sunstroke
conditions.
The sea shore temples, Pancha Rathas, Thirukadalmallai- The temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu
, Varaha Cave Temple a small rock-cut temple dating back to the 7th century, The Shore
Temple and Light House- built in 1894, are surely to be paid a visit.
The great thing about this town is it's mixed culture which includes the local people and the
foreigners from round the world, be it American, Mexican or French, they all live in harmony
despite of the cultural differences.
The town is famous for sea foods, from tiger prawns to tuna fishes, Squids, lobsters, crabs and
many more amazing dishes that are sure gonna take away your taste buds to a different
horizon, if you are a die hard non vegetarian and fish lover especially. There are many
continental food outlets like French and Italian which are famous for their their specialised
menus.
For shopping sprees, the streets are full of various boutiques and outlets with the modest skirts,
tops, beach wears, dungaree, harem pants and you will also notice beautiful handmade loafers
and foot wears. I will recommend to design your own style of chappal and order it, because I
Page 3/12

had bought myself two pairs of daily wear comfortable slippers for on and off purposes and that
too with genuine leathers and materials. It's hand made and the best part is the cost is very
genuine and economical. Other that that, Jute bags, tote bags, and marble en crafted souvenirs
like show pieces are best buy if you want to take back the memories of this place.
We went for the Sunrise and Sunset and its very serene. The beauty of the nature cannot be
described. So the best thing is to capture them if you want to see them forever.
It's been a very calm and exotic weekend and that too on the eve of Valentines day. So my
overall experience was Just WOW! I really haven't expected that the personified beauty of
Mahabalipuram will make me mesmerised to this extent that I would actually advise couples to
pay a visit to this place once.
Do keep your sunglasses, slippers and cameras. And yeah enjoy it to the core with your loved
ones!" - Nupur Anand, Patna, Feb 17, 2015

October visit to Mahabalipuram

"It has been my wish since a graduate student in Fine Arts and then a Doctoral Research
Scholar in Art History, to be able to see in person, the sculptures I had so far learnt about from
photographic reproductions in books. Mahabalipuram is a quaint place and we reached easily
over road from our earlier destination, Pondicherry. A small town huddling close to the historic
sites, one only wonders why its tourist status isn't more brighter, in terms of a more pronounced
and active engagement from official authorities, including the Government as well as NGOs.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The so-called Shore temple, the Five Rathas, teh magnificent
relief panels of the Descent of Ganges (both the finished and the unfinished ones), the
numerous cave-temples. Do not miss the opportunity to request the purohit of the Sthalashayan
Perumal Temple to grant you access to the Adi Varaha Cave , he is also the purohit for that
cave-temple, perhaps the only active cave-temple of Mamallapuram. Do not miss the fried fish
freshly caught off the shore and sold at shanties along the pathway leading to the beach
following the fencing of the Shore Temple! Shop till you drop for carved stone sculptures at the
workshops of the local craftsmen - you cannot miss these.
Activities & things to do: Delve into history, the past reflected in the stone carvings and the
temple complexes. If you are lucky enough to be in a hotel that does have facilities, jump into
the pool to laze around for a day --- the sea at Mamallapuram is too choppy and stone ridden to
venture in. Very few do. In fact there is a statutory warning on a faded sign post on the beach
against attempting to sea-swim.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Easily accessible from Chennai." - Sanjoy

Trip to 'Coastal Couple' - II

"As I already said in my review of Pondicherry that Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry
Page 4/12

compliments each other so well that I decided to call them Coastal Couple. Mahabalipuram is
more known for its historical importance of the pallava dynasty. Its one of the world heritage
site.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: As soon we reached to Mahabalipuram from Pondicherry, we
went for the sightseeing. Everything can be covered within 3-4 hours if you don't go into too
much detail. Its a small city and all the locales like Arjuna's Penance, Varaha Cave Temple, five
rathas etc are separated by 0.5-1 km on an average. The main attraction is of course the shore
temple and is a must visit for any body going to Mahabalipuram. The autowalla charged us Rs
200 for the sightseeing.
Activities & things to do: Next morning we decided to be at hotel and enjoy the surrounding. We
had booked our room in Mamalla Beach resort and believe me they are the best in Business
considering the price factor. 1300 for room and rest for food. So we had candle light dinner right
at the sea shore and a morning walk with the sun rising from the sea. It was just beautiful.
Since the sea current is high here as compared to Pondy. Its always advisable to take a dip into
the sea at Pondy only and not here.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We went from Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram via
Bus. There are buses operated by Tamil Nadu govt plying to Chennai. Take the bus which goes
through East Coast road. We hired a taxi to drop at Chennai station to catch shatabdi to
Bangalore. So two ways to visit the Coastal Couple from Delhi
1. Delhi - Bangalore(Only when You want to visit Bangalore or have friend working there whom
you wanna meet) - Take Luxury bus to Pondicherry - hire taxi or Govt bus to Mahabalipuram
(will take 2 Hrs approx) - Chennai (2 hours again) - Train or Bus to Bangalore - and WAPAS
Delhi
2. Delhi - Chennai - Pondicherry - Mahabalipuram (any of the two can be visited first since
Mahabalipuram falls between Chennai and Pondy) Wapas- Chennai and then Delhi" Abbey, Ghaziabad, May 13, 2007
