Preparation/Materials:
Mad Libs story template with near even amounts of blanks for verbs,
nouns, and adjectives
A location with enough room for students to easily and safely execute
locomotor movements
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1: The student will classify the given words as verbs, nouns,
or adjectives by making the initial letter of the part of speech they
believe the word exemplifies.

Objective 2: The student will contribute examples of verbs, nouns, or

adjectives to use in the Mad Libs story.
Objective 3: The student will collaborate with their groups to perform
the words in the Mad Libs story that correlate to the part of speech
their group was assigned using non-locomotor and locomotor
movements.
Objective 4: The student will demonstrate their knowledge of verbs,
nouns, and adjectives by stating examples as we go around the circle
while cooling down.

Elements of Creative Movement:

Body: The student will uses shapes to create the letters that
correspond to a part of speech.
Place: The student will utilize general space and various levels when
choosing their movements to act out the words they hear in the Mad
Libs story that identify with their part of speech.
Movement: The student will use locomotor movements to demonstrate
the words in the Mad Libs story.
Instruction/Procedures:
Motivation/Introduction:
The teacher will say:
o In Language Arts, we have been talking about verbs, nouns, and
adjectives separately, but today we are going to work on
identifying them together.
o Who can tell me what a verb is? Noun? Adjective?
Expected Responses: A verb is an action or the word that
describes what the noun is doing. A noun is a person,
place, or thing. An adjective is a characteristic or quality
that describes the noun.
o For a warm-up, I will hold up a card with a word on it. You will
have to decide what part of speech the word fits with. Then you
will use your body to create the shape of the first letter of the
part of speech you believe to be correct (V for verb, N for noun,
or A for adjective).
Expected Responses: The students will look and listen for a
word, then decide which part of speech the word best fits
with. The students will then create either the letter V,
N, or A to signify which part of speech they chose.
o Today we are going to use verbs, nouns, and adjectives that you
provide as a class to create a Mad Libs story.

The students will respond with words based on their

current knowledge and past experiences that they know to
be verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
The teacher will use the student contributions to complete
the Mad Libs story.

Directions:

The teacher will explain that Mad Libs are stories with missing words
that allow for the reader to fill them in with words that fit the
designated parts of speech.
The teacher will ask the students to contribute 5 verbs, 5 nouns, and 5
adjectives to fill the blanks in the story.
o The students will provide 5 verbs, 5 nouns, and 5 adjectives that
they would like to be used in the story.
The teacher will then split the students into 3 groups and assign each
group a part of speech. The teacher then state that as the story is
read, the students must listen for words that identify with their
assigned part of speech. When they hear a word, the group will act out
the word using non-locomotor or locomotor movements. To challenge
the students, the teacher may assign a specific element of creative
movement to each group that the students must consider when acting
out their words.
o The students will listen carefully to the story to identify words
that exemplify their assigned part of speech. The students will
work together as a group to use non-locomotor or locomotor
movements to demonstrate their words.
The teacher may ask each of the groups to restate a couple of the
words that they remember from the story to review once the story has
ended.
o The students will respond with some of the words they remember
from the story that identified with their part of speech.

Closure:

The teacher will ask the students to form a circle to cool down and
review verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
o The students will form a circle with space in between each
student.
The teacher will say:
o We will go around the circle and state a verb. Imitate my
movement as you say your verb. Try to say a word that has not
been previously said. I will start.

The student will state a verb and copy the movement when
it is their turn.
o Now go around the circle and copy my movement as you state a
noun.
The student will state a noun and copy the new movement
as it reaches them.
o Lets go around the circle one last time and state an adjective
as you copy my motion.
The student will state an adjective and copy the motion
when it is their turn.
The teacher will shortly review the three key concepts the students
explored throughout this activity to ensure the students leave the
activity with a clear understanding of the terms.
