Introduction
Our planet earth used to be a perfect place for living. With the increasing amount of trash
created by mankind through all sorts of activities, our nature is greatly affected and our
living quality has deteriorated. We all need to do our part to care for the planet
earth. Recycling is one of the most effective ways to preserve our environment and more
importantly, anyone can do it.
Use your engineering skills to build a robot that can collect trash and sort them into the
correct recycle bins. This not only prevents trash from ending up in the landfill, it helps to
turn used waste and materials into useful products - from Trash to Treasure!
Game Objectives
Two teams will compete at the same time. Each team will need to control the robot to
collect trash. Then, it needs to sort the trash based on its material and place it into the
correct recycle bin. +2 points will be accumulated for each trash in the correct recycle
bin. Placing trash into a wrong recycle bin will result in -1 point. The team that scores the
most points within 5 minutes will be the winner.
Game Field

* Details available in appendix.

Objects (Trash)

Aluminum cans
500ml plastics mineral bottles
250ml paper drink cartons

Teams
Each team comprises of 1 to 3 team members (aged 10 and above) and 1
teacher/parent/guardian. Only team members are permitted to enter the game field and
only ONE is permitted to control the robot.

Robots
Robot shall start in the Home base.
Robot should be operated through wireless connection via rero Remote app on Android
or iPhone smartphone.
rero Robotics Kit is to be used for robot construction. Participants may attach any
materials other than parts from rero Robotics Kit to improve the robot. However, rero
parts must remain as the main building and controlling elements for the robot.
There are NO size and weight limits.
Team members are not allowed to touch the robot once the game has begun, except for
retry.
Robot may collect more than one (1) trash at a time before carrying to the recycle bins.

Retry
NO limit to the number of retry.
The students may request for a retry from a judge by raising their hands.
The students may only touch the robot once a judge grants it.
During a retry, a student must place the robot back to its home base. If there's any trash
currently loaded on the robot, a judge will put it back to the game field.
On a retry, the participants may replace the parts of the robots, change batteries, or
repair damaged parts.

Matches
Each match shall last for a maximum of five (5) minutes.
A maximum of one (1) minute will be provided for the setting up of the robots.
At the end of the setting up time, the teams may continue setting up their robots once the
match begins, if needed.
The match may end earlier in the following cases:
1.
2.

The teams manage to collect all trash available.

Judges decided that the continuity of the match is no longer possible.

In case of a tie or draw, winner will be declared as per the following order of priority:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Team with no trash placed in the wrong recycle bins

Team with lower number of retries.
Team with the higher accumulated points throughout the competition.
* If there is still a tie after that, the judges will decide the winner based on their
judgment.

Competition Rules
Robot will start in the home base.
The operator will start to control the robot once the match begins.
Robot will navigate through the common zone and obstacle zone to collect trash.
The robot may have an extend-able arm to collect the trash. It may carry more than one (1)
trash at a time.
If the trash falls to the ground, the robot may still try to pick it up. If it couldn't pick it up,
the judges will not put it back to its original position.
Each trash has to be placed in the correct recycle bin to accumulate points. Then, a robot
can continue to collect more trash if the match is still on.
You are NOT allowed to place trash into opponents recycle bins.
You are NOT allowed to immobilize the opponents robot. If you do so, a force retry
will be granted to your team.

Obstacles
The robot needs to go through some
obstacles in order to collect the trash at the
end of the game field. You can choose to
conquer ONE of the two obstacles to reach
those trash. After your robot has loaded the
trash, again, it must go through ONE of the
obstacles (not necessarily the same one) to
place the trash into its recycle bins.

1. Humps

Your robot must be able to go over the humps and without dropping the loaded trash (if
any). If your robot is stuck at the hump, you can ask for retry and if granted, you can
place your robot back to Home base to start over again.

2. Rumble Strips

If you choose to go through Rumble Strips, you will need to use a sensor and program
your robot using rero Planner software to detect these strips. Your robot has to detect the
strip automatically, stop for at least 0.5sec on each strip before continue moving. You can
assign the program to one of the buttons of rero Remote. Manual stopping is considered a
violation and a force retry will be granted.

Scoring
Score will be counted at the end of the match.
Each trash placed in the correct recycle bin yields +2 points.
Each trash placed in the wrong recycle bin contributes -1 point.
Only trash fully placed in the recycle bins will be counted. Trash partially touching the
line in front of recycle bins is NOT counted.

Disqualification
The following behaviors shall be considered as disqualifications of the team by the
judges for a particular match. The team will be stopped and the score for that match for
that team will not be recorded.
. Team not complying with the rules on using rero Robotics Kit as the core building
parts and sole controller of their robot.
. Causing or attempting to damage the opponents robot.
. Members of a team touching their own robot intentionally during the game.
. A robot or any team member(s) intentionally blocking or attacking the opponents
robot or team member(s) directly or indirectly.
. Two (2) False Starts in a match (robot moves before the Judge signals a start.)
. Performing any act against the spirit of fair play and friendship between participating
teams.
. The team that does not follow the instruction or warning of the judge.

Others
. For any other behavior not specified in the rules, judges are given full authority to
make a decision and their decision is final in the event of a dispute.
. All robots must be designed and made by team members.

Competition
The competition is plated according to the following format:

Group Stage (12 groups with 3 teams each):

Two matches per group. 8 teams with the highest accumulated score from the two
matches shall advance to Quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals: Knockout matches.

Semi-finals: Knockout matches.

Finals: Knockout match.

Awards
Prizes shall include awards for the Champion, 1st and 2nd Runner-ups & Best Design.
