Network Paging Optimization (NPO)

Service Overview
(Formerly known as SmartPage)

CDMA, EVDO and LTE Service Provider Challenges

Maintaining optimal paging performance

Managing the cost of paging resources such as Paging Channels
Improving efficiency in light of a manually-intensive process using Recent Change
Ease the implementation and maintenance of new CDMA cell paging features

How Network Paging Optimization Can Help

Manages all aspects of cell paging

Uses ECP and GPS data to display cell locations and paging boundaries
Creates and edits LA, LAC, CLAC and ISPAGE paging configurations
Optimizes Distance Based Paging configurations
Views and edits ECP paging strategies
Produces Method of Procedures document to update paging strategies after cell rehomes
Generates reports to monitor and improve network paging strategies

Network Paging Optimization Benefits

Increases customer satisfaction by increasing successful paging (incoming calls)

Improves problem resolution time by using a visual representation of paging data
Lowers cost by minimizing the number of cells paged and page attempts
Improves process efficiency by editing paging strategies and generating reports
Lowers data traffic by optimally connecting and resuming user sessions
Allows resource recovery by efficiency improvements, 2nd paging channels may no longer be
needed for instance

A Simpler Method of Designing and

Optimizing EVDO Paging
The Challenge
For optimum efficiency of paging channel utilization,
each distance paging region needs to be set on a per cell
basis. With 400+ cells having 4 Distance Paging tiers
each, across multiple Service Nodes how do you make
the most of your finite paging channel resources in a
reasonable amount of time?

A job normally taking days to implement, followed by

trial and error experimentation can now be done in a
matter of hours.
Configuring Distance Paging with NPO
The Distance Paging Calculator allows you to adjust
parameters for setting individual paging ring sizes
across a Service Node:

The NPO Solution

Alcatel-Lucent NPO EVDO Engineering allows you to
assess the relationship between all faces of all cells in a
Service Node, using an intuitive graphical interface.
After automatically configuring new paging regions for
all cells using the built in calculator, NPO allows you to
view your new paging regions on a local map, and adjust
rings or sets of rings via a convenient drag and drop
interface.
NPO EVDO Paging Configuration leads you
through 5 easy steps:

Select Cells or Service Nodes

Set distance Paging Regions
Verify Paging Areas on Map
Adjust outlying areas and remote cells, if needed
Generate bulk change scripts to implement changes

Visually verify Paging areas on a local map, sets of cell

rings can be clicked on and drug in or out as needed to
fine tune areas:

Do you find it time consuming and difficult to create new

paging strategies after cell rehomes and new office
deployments?
The Challenge

NPO Rehome Paging MOP Workflow

After completing cell rehomes or introducing a new

office, your paging LA, LAC, CLAC and intersystem
paging configurations are out of date and need to be
reconfigured. These paging strategies were difficult and
time consuming to initially design and implement and
will take time and training to relearn those strategies
and determine the correct changes required for the cell
rehome or new office.

Step 1: Verify current paging strategy & baseline

paging performance Use the NPO paging specific
reports to verify the current paging strategy and baseline
the current page performance. If need be, correct issues
and errors by using the NPO interactive maps and
automatic updates.

The NPO Solution

The Network Paging Optimization (NPO) eService tool
can be used to automatically generate the paging
configuration changes associated with a major cell
rehome or new office introduction and create a Method
of Procedure document along with changes scripts. By
following the steps outlined below, keeping your paging
strategy in synch with your network growth is easy:

Step 2: Input rehoming data into NPO Import the cell

rehome information into NPO via a spreadsheet or select
the cells on the map and indicate the rehome
information via a dialog box.

Step 4: Regenerate CLAC assignments (optional)

After cell rehomes, the CLAC assignments typically will
need to be reworked. NPO provides and easy procedure
for regenerating the CLAC assignments based on import
measurement data collected after the rehome.

Step 5: Monitor paging performance Use the paging

metric reports from NPO to verify the page performance
after the cell rehome has been completed.

Select a set of cells and change them to a new MSC

Step 3: Generate and execute NPO Rehome MOP

Executing the NPO Rehome MOP operation will
automatically generate the paging configuration changes
required for the specified cell rehomes, create the
configuration changes scripts and produce a MOP
document detailing when each of the changes scripts
should be run in accordance with rehome procedure.

Additional NPO Modules

The base CDMA NPO eService can be upgraded to
support the evaluation, redesign and implementation of
EVDO paging strategies. LTE support is also available,
Tracking Area optimization will be available late summer
2011.
Availability
The NPO LTE and EVDO upgrades and the NPO Paging
Reports are generally available.
