July 3, 2016
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings of Peace. We welcome our visitors from out of town during this holiday weekend. We are
very happy to have you with us.
Thursday of this past week (June 30) was Social Media Day. When you think about it a bit, the Catholic
Church has an odd relationship with social media. Certain key church things absolutely cant be done
online. The sacraments come to mind, for example! On the other hand, the staff and friars at the
Shrine are finding more and more ways that social media can be helpful to us and the people that we
serve. Social media helps to remind people about church schedules and important dates. It helps to
keep people connected to each other and to the rhythms of Church.
In addition to social media, the Shrine strives to utilize other technologies to support the people in our
worshiping community and beyond. We receive thousands of prayer requests via text message each
month. You can "Text a Prayer Request" to 617-553-4100 at any time 24/ 7. The Friars on Arch Street
pray for these special intentions during group prayer, which happens in our private chapel
upstairs. What a convenient way to engage in prayer for those who embrace mobile technology!
John Kendall works full-time at St. Anthony Shrine as our Director of Social Media and Web Content. He
also attends to several ancillary tasks, such as maintaining the new digital information screen in the
lobby and the kiosks in the lobby where one can make donations. John is great about coming into the
Shrine on off-hours or on special liturgical feast days. Assisting John these days is Laura Sikora, a
summer intern from Newbury College.
One of their big summer projects is planning for the Shrines Giving Tuesday event which will take place
this year on November 29, 2016. Giving Tuesday is an annual day of philanthropy for nonprofit
organizations like the Shrine. It is very purposefully placed on the Tuesday immediately following the
Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday sequence. Please mark that date on your calendar and
consider making an end-of-the year gift to the Shrine on that day. The proceeds from that day help to
keep this great downtown ministry going throughout the year. Thank you for your generosity!

Executive Director

RECOVERY PROGRAMS AT ST. ANTHONY SHRINE

My name is Anthony Andreottola and I am
the Director and coordinator of the Father
Mychal Judge Recovery Center. I have been
in my position for 12 years now.
I have been a counselor working exclusively
with alcoholics and addicts for over twentyfive years and have been blessed to witness
the miracle of recovery in the lives of many
here at St. Anthony's. I would be glad to talk
with anyone interested in our services and
how we may be able to help you or a family
member or friend.
ANTHONY ANDREOTTOLA
Director, Fr. Mychal Judge Center for Recovery

The Father Mychal Judge Recovery Center at the Shrine is a popular but discreet
ministry, which serves the spiritual needs of those struggling with addictions of all kinds.
The Center offers individual and group counseling by trained and experienced
counselors. We also provide family support and assistance with referrals to treatment and
other services when needed. We are also a long-standing venue for individuals in 12step
programs for working on 4th and fifth steps. The Center also offers workshops and
retreats focused on recovery and spiritual growth.
Next month we will begin offering a weekly 12step meeting at the Center on Saturdays
from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This can be a good opportunity for anyone new to recovery
to learn about the 12 steps of recovery. Please feel free to call for more details.

contribution to our Annual Franciscan Campaign.

ARCH STREET GROUP

The Arch Street Group is a group of Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday evenings in the basement of Saint Anthonys Shrine located at
100 Arch Street, Boston, MA. The group was found by Father Charles R., who I
understand was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
According to AAs General Service Office Archives in New York, the group was founded
on October 20, 1972 and was originally named Arch A Group. At that time the group
met only on Monday evenings with a membership of 20 people.
Today the membership is slightly higher with 35 members on the roster. People who are
not members of the group are also welcome to attend the meetings. Each night the
group meets, there is a different format. On Monday the group reads from the book
Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Being a twelve step program this is a fundamental
part of our recovery. Folks will each read a paragraph or two and then discuss what has
been read. Wednesday evenings there is a speaker who shares their experience with the
attendees both with active addiction and also since being in recovery. The attendees
may then share their experiences as well. Thursday night the book Alcoholics
Anonymous is read. This text is the foundation of the entire program of Alcoholics
Anonymous and contains all the information necessary for anyone who has a desire to
stop drinking. This meeting is very similar to the Monday meeting. A paragraph or two is
read and then it is discussed at the end of the meeting.
All three of the meetings are ended in the same manner. All who choose to, stand and
recite the Lords Prayer. Although AA is not a religious program, it certainly is a spiritual
one. Most members I know are firm believers in a power greater than themselves. For
me personally, I dont think I would be able to remain sober without the help of my
Higher Power. I unashamedly refer to that power as God.
This program, group and God are the sole reasons I am still walking this earth. I have
discovered through all three a manner of living I once thought impossible. It is by far the
best thing that has ever happened to me.
