In the rigid base condition, the simple model behaves as a SDOF system. A parametric study is performed using an earthquake record representative of those recorded on soft soil in Mexico City during a strong earthquake. ‘The effects of temporary base uplift on the seismic response of SDOF systems were analized using a parametric study and typical earthquake records obtained in Mexico, Chile and California, on soft soil for the former place and on rigid soil for the later. Parameters for evaluating the seismic response of the analyzed structures were lateral displacement, strength, hysteretic energy and a measure of seismic damage in structures. iii RESUME! Se propone un procedimiento aproximado para evaluar la respuesta sfsmica no lineal de edificaciones con base flexible, asi como para evaluar el efecto del levantamiento temporal de la base de estructuras de un grado de libertad. El procedimiento empleado en Ja primera parte de este trabajo se basa en relacionar la respuesta sismica de un modelo sencillo con Ja de un modelo de varios grados de libertad con base flexible. En la condicién de base rigida, ¢! modelo sencillo se comporta como una estructura de un grado de libertad,
