Problem 1.1. Two flat plates are oriented parallel above a fixed lower plate as shown in Fig. 1.
The top plate, located a distance b above the fixed plate, is pulled along with speed V . The other
thin plate is located a distance cb, where 0 < c < 1, above the fixed plate. This plate moves with
speed V1 , which is determined by the viscous shear forces imposed on it by the fluids on its top and
bottom. The fluid on the top is twice as viscous as that on the bottom. Plot the ratio V1 V as a
function of c for 0 < c < 1.

Problem 1.2. A 25 mm diameter shaft is pulled through a cylindrical bearing as shown in
Fig. 1. The lubricant that fills the 0.3-mm gap between the shaft and bearing is an oil having a
2
kinematic viscosity of 8.0E 4 ms and a specific gravity of 0.91. Determine the force P required to
pull the shaft at a velocity of 3m/s. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear.

Problem 1.3. A new computer drive is proposed to have a disc, as shown in Fig. 3. The disc is
to rotate at 10, 000rpm, and the reader head is to be positioned 0.0005 in. above the surface of the
disc. Estimate the shearing force on the reader head as a result of the air between the disc and the
head.

Problem 1.4. A 10kg block slides down a smooth inclined surface as shown in Fig. 4. Determine
the terminal velocity of the block if the 0.1 mm gap between the block and the surface contains
SAE30 oil at 60 F . Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear, and the area of the block
in contact with the oil is 0.1m2 .

stationary base. Determine the frictional torque on the shaft when it rotates at 5000rpm.

Problem 1.6. A block of weight W slides down an inclined plane while lubricated by a thin film
of oil, as in Fig. 6. The film contact area is A and its thickness is h. Assuming a linear velocity
distribution in the film, derive an expression for the terminal (zero-acceleration) velocity V of
the block. Find the terminal velocity of the block if the block mass is 6kg, A = 35cm2 , = 15 , and
the film is 1 mm thick SAE 30 oil at 20 C.

Problem 1.7. A simple and popular model for two nonnewtonian fluids in Fig. 7 is the power-law:
 n
du
C
dy
where C and n are constants fit to the fluid [16]. From Fig. 7, deduce the values of the exponent
n for which the fluid is (a) newtonian, (b) dilatant, and (c) pseudoplastic. Consider the specific
n
model constant C = 0.4 Nms2 , with the fluid being sheared between two parallel plates as in Fig. 8.
If the shear stress in the fluid is 1200P a, find the velocity V of the upper plate for the cases (d)
n = 1.0, (e) n = 1.2, and ( f ) n = 0.8.

Problem 1.8. A block of weight W is being pulled over a table by another weight Wo , as shown in
Fig. 9. Find an algebraic formula for the steady velocity U of the block if it slides on an oil film
of thickness h and viscosity . The block bottom area A is in contact with the oil. Neglect the cord
weight and the pulley friction. Assume a linear velocity profile in the oil film.
