Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (22 balls) or J. & P. Coats (16 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 30, White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 11.
This material is sufficient for 4 place mats, each about 12 x 18 inches and a center mat about 12 x 36 inches. Flowers are made
individually and then sewed to mats.
Gauge: 7 sps make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Starting at one end, ch 75 (to measure about 4 inches), turn. 1st row: D c in 6th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch.
Repeat from * across (24 sps). Row should measure about 3 inches. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Skip ch-2, d c in next d c, * ch 2, d c in
next d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd row, thus making sp over sp until piece measures 2 inches. Break off.
Make another piece same as this, but with 1 additional row. Do not break off but ch 104 (to measure about 6 inches), then continue
making sp over sp across first piece. Ch 5, turn. Work in pattern until piece measures 4 inches from deepest point.
Next row:Sl st across first 17 sps (or across first 2 inches), ch 5, continue in pattern to within 17 sps (or 2 inches) from end. Ch
5, turn. Work in pattern over these center sps for 10 more inches. Then ch 51 (to measure about 3 inches). Break off. Attach thread
to opposite end of same row, ch 53 (to measure about 3 inches), turn. Following row: D c in 6th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d
c in next ch. Repeat from * across chain, continue across center sps and continue across other chain making 17 sps. Ch 5, turn.
Work in pattern for 1 inches. Then work over the first 24 sps, making sp over sp for 2 inches. Break off. Attach thread to
opposite side and work to correspond. Attach thread to one corner, ch 3, and work a row of d c closely together all around edges,
making 5 d c in each outer corner and skipping the 2 corner sps at inner corners. Join and break off.
Flowers. Starting at center, ch 15, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 30 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: S c in each of next 6 s c. Ch 1,
turn. Then work as for 2nd row, increasing 1 s c at end of each row until there are 14 s c in the row. Then decrease 1 s c at both
ends of each row until 2 s c remain. Then sl st in each of 2 s c. Fasten and break off. Work remaining 4 petals in same way. Tack
petals together with needle and thread. Make 12 flowers and sew in place as in illustration.
Center Mat. Work exactly as for Place Mats, but making the center section 27 inches long (instead of 10 inches). Make 26
flowers and sew in place as in illustration.
