Outsiders Perspective Interview
On November 21, 2015 Angela Brommel, part-time faculty member and instructional
designer for online creative writing courses for adult learners was interviewed. Tenaya Watson,
student attending University of Phoenix, asked Angela Brommel the following questions:
1) How do you assess learners in the creative writing program?
Students are requested to generate background information regarding strengths and
weaknesses in writing skills, submit writing samples, and provide constructive
feedback during ongoing sessions (A. Brommel, personal communication, November
21, 2015).
2) How often are these assessments administered?
Assessments are administered through formal and informal measures. Each week the
students have to submit a creative writing assignment that is graded (A. Brommel,
personal communication, November 21, 2015).
3) How do you create your assessments for online learning?
My students are creative and need to generate new ideas. I urge them to research
magazine articles, poetry, and online resources (A. Brommel, personal
communication, November 21, 2015).
4) What are your observations of learners using rubrics for learning?
Students need structure (A. Brommel, personal communication, November 21,
2015).
5) How do your rubrics evaluate learning assignments?
Rubrics have detailed scoring and allow for feedback (A. Brommel, personal

6) What is the desired needs analysis for the online program?
Support for writing services is the desired needs analysis. The observations were as
follows: Students benefit from hands-on writing experiences, feedback from the
students was imperative for effective instructional design, and students needed
additional understanding of reasons behind corrective feedback (A. Brommel,
personal communication, November 21, 2015).
7) How do you keep learners engaged during the writing process?
Collected information for the needs analysis resulted in reinforcement of advanced
writing curriculum and encouraging students to further engage in his/her writing
skills. Also, writers need freedom to creatively express thoughts and ideas (A.
Brommel, personal communication, November 21, 2015).
8) Do you change your teaching methods to cater to different learning styles?
Students responded better to assignment tasks being delegated and catered to the
students individual learning styles (A. Brommel, personal communication,
November 21, 2015).
9) What improvements would you make to the creative writing online program for
learners?
Improvements could include additional writing resources on campus, such as tutors
and mentors; language support services for students that speak foreign languages;
updated course catalog requirements established for college; and college campuses
providing ongoing writing workshops to support creative writing techniques (A.
Brommel, personal communication, November 21, 2015).
