Pro-Abortion vs. Anti-Abortion
According to the Oxford Dictionary, abortion is the termination of a human pregnancy,
often in the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. It is a strongly controversial topic because it is dealing
with a human babys life. There are many different views on this matter, yet it is ultimately split
between those for it and those against it. Abortion raises a difference in opinion on whether it
should be allowed or be made illegal.
The anti-abortionists do not believe in abortion for different reasons. There are different
arguments but each relate to two main points. There are those who believe it is wrong based on
religion, and those who just simply want to protect a life. Ruben Diaz is against abortion because
he feels the mothers simply feel like they cannot support their baby, so they have an abortion as a
way out. He wants to be able to give aid to those in need so that these mothers do not feel the
need to have an abortion (Diaz). Anti-abortionist believe that nobody has the right to take a life
except for God. They do not think that these mothers have the right to take the babys life away.
To them murder is a sin and abortion is considered murder. There is argument against abortion
because it is said that abortion is murder and those that commit murder are punished. The antiabortionists are trying to make abortion a crime, so that those that have an abortion will be
punished. Another thing the anti-abortionists do not like is the fact that the young can have an
abortion because, in their mind, these teenagers do not know the results of this (10 Common
Arguments For and Against Abortion). In the mind of anti-abortionists, abortion is a crime and
should be stopped. They want abortion to be made illegal so that these unborn babys lives can
stop being taken away.
Pro-abortionists support abortion for multiple different reasons. One reason is that they
believe it is the womens right to choose. One womans story will have one in tears; this

Nebraska woman was pregnant, and the doctor told her that her baby would not be able to make
it because the babys lungs would not fully develop. She wanted to get an abortion, but she was
22 weeks; in Nebraska it is illegal to receive an abortion after 20 weeks. She was forced to give
birth, and she had to watch her child suffocate in her arms. She wrote letters telling her story and
expressed her opinion that law that should not have been made (Eichenwald). Pro-abortionists
believe that the women should have the right to choose so that they do not have to see their child
suffer. Another issue is when women are raped; they should have the right to choose abortion if
impregnated. A ten year old child in Paraguay was being abused by her stepfather. The abuse was
reported, but no action was taken and a year later the little girl ended up in the hospital pregnant.
When the mother brought her child to the hospital, they thought that she was being abused
because of the swollen stomach and that caused the mother to be arrested. The mother wanted the
child to have an abortion, but in Paraguay it is illegal. The International Amnesty is trying to
fight for the child to have the abortion because of her age, but they will not allow it. This tenyear old will not only have to raise herself but also this baby (Doig). They see this as wrong
because now this child will no longer be child after that baby is born. Another thing addressed is
that many young teenagers are getting pregnant and not being able to further themselves in
school (Cronen). Pro-abortionists want women to have the choice of having an abortion.
The two sides have such strong arguments. Pro-abortionists want to make sure women
keep their rights and will be able to choose what they see best. Their ultimate goal is to make
sure abortions stay legal and not so difficult to receive one. As for the anti-abortionists, they want
to make sure they protect the lives of these unborn babies. Not only do they want to protect them,
but also to make sure the mothers are well taken care of. The two sides want what they believe
based on ones morals. Eichenwald gives scenarios on choosing who lives and dies, but not

everyones answer is the same because everyones morals are different. The issue does not have a
right or wrong side, but more like for or against based on ones own beliefs.
Abortion is a controversial topic that has two sides, either anti-abortion or pro-abortion.
At this point in time, the pro-abortionists have what they want because it is still legal. In the
United States today, it is legal in each state, but each state has the right to have restrictions such
as a waiting period of 24 hours and parental consent for minors (States Probe Limits of
Abortion Policy). The abortion issue will always stay alive in America because of the fact that
America believes in everyones rights.
