Solving Modier Problems


Felix was complimented on a great game and
a ne job of goaltending by his mother.

only to confront an angry watchdog.

Tips
Ask yourself What do these words apply to?
and keep the modier close.
Put almost, nearly, just, only, even, hardly,
merely, scarcely right next to the words they
modify.

Dangling Modiers

Three Rules
1. Ask What does the modier apply to?
2. Be sure there is a word or group of words in
the sentence for the modier to apply to.
3. Put the modier as close to possible to the
word group it applies to.

Tips for Great Narra:ves


Conict you need to deal with a problem
Use strong imagery and details
Make sure images and sounds contribute to
viewers experience.
Draw the viewer into the story with
compelling characters.
Try to create an emo:onal impact on readers.

Discussion: Jane
It seems that Jane is the only person Holden likes.
Why wouldnt he go see her when she was at his
school with Stradlater? Discuss why Holden likes
Jane.
Holden really likes the fact that Jane kept all her
kings in the back row. What you think Jane
keeping all her kings in the back row means. Is
this a metaphor for something? If so what?

Context: from La:n contextus (con = together
+ texere = to weave)
The circumstances that form the sejng for an
event, statement, or idea.
In order to understand the event, statement,
or idea fully, you must be knowledgeable
about the context.

What you are looking for when a teacher asks you
to read between the lines.
