Special Educational Needs and Disability Report

It is our aim that all children are given the opportunity to access
appropriate learning opportunities in an inclusive manner. Our
priority is to provide high quality teaching that is differentiated to
meet the individual needs of all children in our care. WASPS
nursery has a wide range of intervention programmes available for
children with a range of different needs. In some cases we provide
bespoke programmes based on the advice from outside
professionals such as the Speech and Language team,
Physiotherapists etc.
WASPS manager has an early years degree which included
supporting children with specific learning difficulties. All the staff
have specialised qualifications in areas that benefit children from
Autism spectrum disorders, speech and language delay to children
who are deaf or partially sighted. One member of staff is fluent in
Makaton and has used this skill to help children to communicate
with each other. We have also had vast experience with children
who have had medical needs and we have linked with outside
services to support these needs. We are happy however to do
further training to accommodate a childs needs should the need
arise.
All staff has high expectations of what children are capable of
achieving. This said the manager, key worker, and SENCO
undertake regular monitoring meetings to discuss the effectiveness
of the provision and the childrens progress within this. We are
committed to high quality learning for all our children. Parents,
outside professionals and childrens views are always part of our
agenda.
Inclusive practice is always promoted in everything we do. Once a
childs needs are initially identified a discussion between parents,
staff and outside professional takes place. Desired outcomes are
indentified and support, resources and programmes of learning are
put in place. If there is a difference of opinion as to the needs of
the child we would seek advise from external agencies as
appropriate. Activities are carefully planned to ensure that all
childrens needs are catered for. This may include looking at
disabled facilities in advance or higher staff ratio on outings. At
WASPS childrens safety is paramount and all staff are well
informed about childrens complex needs especially before any
new activity or outside trip. We therefore seek to ensure that we
offer the best provision possible to obtain maximum learning

How parents are involved.

We have an opendoor policy at WASPS so if you are worried
about a child in any way you can discuss this with the childs key
worker or SENCO.
Although the key worker/one to one worker has the responsibility in
nursery for a childs overall learning we see parent/EYW
communication as imperative to childrens learning. We see
parents as partners in children care and learning. Regular
meetings take place to ensure that information about progress and
learning is exchanged and opportunities about how this learning
can be developed further at home will be explored.
In addition parents can discuss their childs progress with their key
worker/one to one worker at the start and end of the session.
Parents concerns can also be addressed at this time and
appointments for a more in-depth meeting can be arranged at
appropriate times if need be.
WASPS do provide opportunities for parents to access
training/learning events as part of our parent support network.
These sessions include play afternoons or one/one sessions with
parents or outside multi- agencies events, which WASPS facilitate.
What support is there for children with SEND
All children are observed and developmental progress tracked as
part of WASPS ongoing assessment of the children in our care. If
we have any concerns about a childs development a discussion
would take place between the EYW and parents. At the meeting a
desired outcome for the child would be identified. This may include
extra support needed which would be provided by the setting/or
Early Years Access Funding referral to outside agencies or the
purchase of additional resources.
At WASPS we recognise that children with SEND can experience
a range of social and emotional issues. As a result of this we
always support children in their friendships with their peers. Staff
model appropriate behavior and encourage children to follow by
example. As part of our continuous provision we include circle time
where we help children to express and understand their feelings.
Stories and role-play also support this area of development.

Should a childs key worker leave all staff are familiar with all
nursery children in our care. Regular updates of a childs learning
journey and developmental tracking are kept to ensure that
childrens needs are fully met and staff is kept informed of
childrens development.
Medication
WASPS has a medication policy (see web site) We encourage
parents to administer their childs medication. However when this
is not possible a nominated member of staff will administer the
medication. WASPS staff regularly undertake pediatric first
training.
Personal Care
At WASPS we have toilet facilities for children. These facilities
include small toilets, washbasins and hand dryers. We also have a
bathroom and changing area for children who wear nappies. This
area also includes a toilet with access for a wheel chair and a
shower area if needed. Staff at WASPS are experienced in
supporting children to become independent in toileting and support
toilet training programmes carried out at home. WASPS work
closely with the continence service should the need arise.
Privacy and dignity is always maintained with all children.
Bullying
WASPS hold a clear anti bullying policy. Under no circumstances
will it be tolerated. All children are taught about stopping acts of
unkindness. Staff are vigilant in monitoring childrens behavior for
indicators of bullying and would address such issues with children
and their parents.
Access to external specialist support.
The SEND co-coordinator is responsible for co-ordinating the
actions identified in the assessment process. Wendy Stockton is a
single point of contact for children with additional needs and is
supported by more than one practitioner within a TAF /(team
around the family)/inclusion network.

This role involves the co-ordination of staff parents and other

professionals to work together more effectively to meet childrens
needs through sharing information legally and professionally.
As a result the people supporting a child with SEND will
know when and how they need to work together to best
meet the needs of that child and the wider family. All
education plans would be fully discussed and implemented
by the setting and progress discussed in future meetings.
If you have any concerns about your childs ability Wendy
Stockton is the first point of call in the nursery .
Building Accessibility
The nursery has wheel chair access and adapted toilet facilities.
Although this is a busy nursery we have an area for quiet
reflection. The nursery does have some specialised equipment e.g.
tables/chairs and other resources but the more personalised
requirements would be discussed and as far as possible
accommodated after the initial meeting with the parents.
Support for children whose first language is not English.
There are increasing numbers of children starting WASPS for
whom English is not the dominant language in the home.
Practitioners at WASPS strive to ensure that our provision matches
the development and learning needs of all children. Strategies to
help children are always put in place to help children with their
learning. These strategies include additional visual support for
children learning English, and illustrations and artifacts to support
and enhance the learning experiences. For a child who has limited
understanding of English, opportunities to use their home language
are promoted through good relationships with their wider families.
The nursery also has a range of duel language books and
resources that reflect different cultures.
Transitions
WASPS has a settling in policy (see web site) which enables
children to come for visits prior to them starting nursery.
Laura Pearce is the nursery Early Years co-ordinator and the first
point of call if you have any worries about your childs transitions.

As all staff work in the same room consistency of care is always

maintained. We do ask that parents/carers complete an All about
me book which give us a insight into your childs personality. A
more general registration form will also be required to be
completed before your child starts nursery.
WASPS links with all local schools to ensure that the transition to
mainstream school is as stress less as possible. Visits to the
nursery from reception teachers situated at local schools are
arranged in the last term before the child leaves for school.
