Weekly Journal of Practicum: SK Sekudai Batu 10, Johor Bahru
Week: One (1)

Problem
Finally, I managed to face the third practicum which requires the teacher trainee to be in
school for 12 weeks. This is the longest practicum period among the three practicums. This is the
first week of my practicum in SK Sekudai Batu 10, Johor Bahru. Madam Nurliza binti Othman was
assigned as my supervisor for major subject; English whereas Mr Razali bin Kadir was assigned as
my supervisor for minor subject; Dunia Seni Visual. As usual, I cannot stop but feeling a strong
apprehension in my mind whenever I come to think about my duty during practicum and the
observation that will be done by my lecturers and my mentors, Mrs Devaki a/p Subramaniam for
English and Mrs Mahdalena binti Mahlid for Dunia Seni Visual. Will I be able to meet their
expectations? Will I be able to carry out what I have planned successfully? How will the students
react to my teaching and learning activity? I was so worried because during the previous
practicums, I did have problems with classroom control and management. It is because I really do
not know how to handle the small children in large groups. For this practicum, 4 Bijak is the smallest
class that I ever get between the three practicums; which only has 33 pupils. Previously, in SK
Taman Cempaka, I have 37 pupils and 39 pupils for SK Taman Universiti 4. Both were Year 2 pupils.
For this time around, it will definitely be totally different as Year 4 pupils behavioural state and
condition are at another level.

Analysis
From my experience of previous two practicums, the problem that would be arise during the
very first week is the lack of preparation in facing all the obstacles to meet my vision of becoming a
great teacher with exceptional personality in this new school. I should have known the techniques to
control and manage the classroom regardless of any level they are. I have learned theoretically on
how to handle and overcome the problems of managing the classroom during the four years of my
bachelor degree program in IPG Temenggong Ibrahim. However, one thing that I never realised up
until I step in the school is that learning to apply the theories that I have learned is never an easy
task. During the studies, we as teacher trainees can easily came out with several solutions
regarding to the theories that we have learned according to the different situations given. But now,
when I as a teacher trainee in school, the situation is totally different from what I expected.
Sometimes, I am totally clueless on what to do or what should I do. How to handle the other pupils
when I am about to solve a conflict within another small group of the pupils.

Suggestions for Improvement

There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned earlier:
I must make a proper mental and physical preparation by reading a lot of materials related to
motivation and pedagogical approaches in education. I need to seek help and support from my
supervising lecturer, my mentors, my family or those who are more experienced, to discuss on the
best way to overcome my problems and anxieties. I need to have faith in myself. Besides, I will have
to pray more to Allah so that He may ease my way and journey along these 12 weeks.
I have to learn to cope with the new atmosphere by taking it positively to ensure that I can
manage my core business successfully even though I undergo loads of obstacles. I will not let any
of these problems bog me down. I have to be strong and persevere despite of having time
constraint due to the lack of opportunity to focus on my practicum duty.
Moreover, I must be able to manage my time so that I will not be left behind the schedule.
This is important so that I will not be too stressful and manage to have self-control.

Duration
I will try to overcome my problems as soon as possible. However, I will be taking time for this
whole 12 weeks to experiment, to measure and to observe the capabilities and the effectiveness of
my methods and ways to overcome this problem. It is because I believe that practicum stage is the
time when the teacher trainee will learn about the real situation in school, especially in the
classrooms.

Assessment of Success
As for the first week, I did not manage enter the assigned classroom for me which is 4 Bijak
as my mentor is still completing her target for this week. Besides, I also followed her whenever she
entered 4 Bijak so that I

Further Action
I will think of ways to deal with my problems from time to time. I will always seek guidance
and help from my supervising lecturers and mentors who have been wonderful assistance so far. I
will also ask for advice and support from other teachers, and not forgetting my beloved family; to
make sure that my problems can be solved.

Conclusion / Reflection
Success will never come as easy as one, two, three, or even as A, B, C. This saying is
closely referred to my current situation. After all, that is the core business of a teacher. According to

Joshua J. Marine, Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life
meaningful. I hope I will manage to survive these coming days and pass with flying colours.
