Reading

Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written texts. It is a

complex skill requiring the coordination of a number of interrelated sources of
information (Anderson et al., 1985).
Reading is the process of constructing meaning through the dynamic interaction
among: (1) the reader's existing knowledge; (2) the information suggested by
the text being read; and (3) the context of the reading situation (Wixson,
Peters, Weber, & Roeber, 1987, citing the new definition of reading for
Michigan).

Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension,

fluency, and motivation. Learn how readers integrate these facets to make
meaning from print.
The process of extracting meaning from a written or printed text.
a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive
meaning (reading comprehension).
Reading is a means of language acquisition, communication, and of
sharing information and ideas.

Processes that affect reading.

Social - is an activity by which people orient themselves to each other,
communicate ideas and emotions, control others and themselves, acquire
status or social position, acquire access to social rewards and privileges, and
engage in various types of social interaction
o Social culture plays an important role in children's experiences with
and attitudes toward reading. If reading is valued at home or at
school, it's likely that the reader will also value it. How often adults
discuss various issues with children or read and talk about books with
children, relates to the reader's background knowledge and
comprehension. Societal changes, school and curricula changes,
increasing student and family diversity, and the challenges of a
technological society account for the current strong emphasis on
improving children's reading skills. Because reading is a social process,
teachers should provide many opportunities for students to interact,
cooperate, and collaborate with others in class.
Physiological - as your brain needs to react to what is on the page. It is the
thinking and alertness of the brain that is used to process the words that are on
a page or screen when you read. Whilst you are alert and thinking, the brain is
working at full capacity, but even at rest it is performing physiological functions
to keep us alive and keep us breathing. Our body is constantly
performing physiological tasks, most of the time we are not aware of the
reactions within our body that our brain and nervous system are causing.
Good health, visual and auditory acuity, visual and auditory perception,
and neurological functioning also affect the reading process. Parents'

socioeconomic status, poverty, and negative home environments play a

crucial role in children's overall health and growth.
Linguistic - a process involved in human language.
Perceptual - Understand how learning and automated processes affect your ability
to read. Learn about the Word Superiority Effect, how word frequecy affects your
ability to recognize words while reading, and how word length affects the speed at
which you read.
Intellectual - Reading causes you to use your mind, or your intellect to understand
what you are reading. Something that is intellectual is something that requires the
use of your mind (intellect)

Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the

words but do not understand or connect to what they are reading,
they are not really reading. Good readers are both purposeful and
active, and have the skills to absorb what they read, analyze it, make
sense of it, and make it their own.
