WELCOME
Welcome
As you look through this prospectus, I hope you
will get a real sense of what it would be like to
study, live and socialise here at one of the UKs
top ten universities.
Since the first students passed through our doors in 1891, we have
been working hard to make sure the experience of being a student
at Surrey is the best it can possibly be.
We are proud to rank alongside the top universities in all three
main national league tables and of our fourth place position for
student satisfaction in The Times/Sunday Times Good University
Guide 2015.
As an undergraduate at Surrey, you will be taught and supported
by some of the most inspiring minds from around the world.
Our beautiful campus provides a first-class learning environment,
some of the best sports facilities in the UK and the chance to enjoy
a vibrant social life. We have invested in high-quality student
accommodation, guaranteeing all of our first year students a
place in University accommodation. We offer a wide range of
services to help you through every stage of your university
adventure and beyond.
I understand that graduate job prospects are a key concern
for students and parents alike and you can be assured that we
are number one in England for graduate employability when
compared with chartered universities in England. A key part of
this success is the option for our students to participate in Surreys
pioneering and sector-leading Professional Training placement
programme which opens the door to real work experience with
one of our 2,300 partner organisations.
It is exciting to be involved with all the wonderful things that
are happening at the University of Surrey. I sincerely hope to
welcome you as a student in 2016 so that you can experience
them for yourself.

RESEARCH
OFFICIALLY
IMPRESSIVE RESEARCH
The University of Surreys pioneering research is
addressing this centurys most pressing challenges,
fuelling students with a spirit of curiosity and drive to
improve the world.
The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the system for
assessing research submitted by UK Higher Education institutions,
brought official recognition for the quality and diversity of our work.
Surrey ranked in the top quartile of all universities in the UK for
Biomedical Sciences, Electronic Engineering, and Hospitality and
Tourism. According to the Times Higher Educations REF analysis,
we also ranked in the top 20 for Economics and Sociology. In all,
98 per cent of our research outputs were rated to be world-leading,
internationally excellent or internationally recognised in terms of
originality, significance and rigour. This culture of outstanding success
is only to be expected from a research-rich, top ten university, but its
only half our story. Fundamental to our identity is the desire to both
create new understanding and pass it on.
Thats why we have a passion for knowledge transfer collaborations
with external partner organisations. Its why we have an unrivalled
record for creating our own spin-out companies to put our expertise to
work immediately, for the good of everyone. And its why we make sure
your teaching is informed by the very latest research so youll often
be learning directly from the researchers themselves.
The following four examples offer a taste of our current work.

LACK OF ACCESSIBLE
TOURISM COSTING
ECONOMY BILLIONS
Many tourist destinations worry about the cost of
adapting for visitors with special access needs. Rather
than being a financial burden, though, could it actually
represent a golden opportunity?
Far from being a niche sector, accessible tourism represents a huge
market. In 2012, travellers with special access needs (whether through
disability or age) undertook 783 million trips within the EU, contributing
394 billion and 8.7 million jobs to the European economy.
Despite this, the worry of many small and medium-sized businesses
is often whether they can recoup the cost of adapting for special
access needs.
Research conducted by academics at Surrey may calm those fears.
In a project funded by the European Commission, researchers found that
the European economy could benefit to the tune of 142 billion every
year, and create 3.4 million jobs in the process, if infrastructure, services
and attitudes towards travellers with special access needs were improved.
The project, carried out by Professor Graham Miller, Dr Victoria
Eichhorn, Dr Gang Li and Dr Jason Chen from the Universitys
School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, represents the
most comprehensive research on accessible tourism carried out so
far in Europe.
While a long-term commitment is needed to see this opportunity fully
realised, the research has shown that even small changes will reap
significant rewards, both for businesses and for travellers hoping to
enjoy Europes rich and varied tourist destinations.

RESEARCH
OBESITY: GAINING
INSIGHT INTO
WEIGHT-LOSS FAILURE
Why do some people gain weight while taking
anti-obesity drugs that reduce the amount of dietary
fat absorbed by the body?
Research by the School of Psychologys Dr Amelia Hollywood and
Professor Jane Ogden reports that some people who take an anti-obesity
drug called orlistat cite its unpleasant side effects as one of the reasons
for being unable to lose weight.
This is important as the medications side effects (which include
incontinence and foul-smelling faeces) occur when fatty foods are eaten,
suggesting that this group of patients are not making the necessary
changes in attitude, diet and lifestyle needed for long-term weight loss.
Some people skipped a scheduled dose of orlistat in order to eat a
high-fat meal without provoking the side effects, while others stopped
taking the drug altogether.
The study suggests that overweight people should receive more
information about how orlistat works when it is prescribed for them.
If health professionals can help patients to understand that the side
effects are actually the consequence of combining the drug with
fat-laden foods, it could encourage a change in diet and improve success
rates in fighting obesity.

Careers
and employability
Training for the future
Surrey students go on to secure graduate roles in most of the
leading companies in the UK. Our list (opposite) reflects the range
and calibre of the organisations that our 2014 graduates now work
for. Were proud of our track record for graduate employability.
Indeed, figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency
(HESA) reveal that 97 per cent of Surreys 2013 graduates were in
work (or further study) six months after they graduated up 4.2
per cent from the previous year. This ranks the University in first
place for graduate employability when compared with chartered
universities in England.
One of the main reasons behind our graduate employability
success rate is down to our Professional Training placement
programme which is one of the largest in the world, with over
2,300 partner organisations in the UK and overseas. These
organisations (from across all industry sectors and size of
company) provide opportunities for students to experience a
real working environment, both in the UK and abroad. As well
as helping hone their professional skills, most students are paid
on placements and visited while they are on placement by an
academic member of their department.
Keith Herrmann, Director of Employability, said, The Professional
Training programme offers a unique experience to students for
gaining access to the world of work as an integral part of their
studies; to meet employers, to develop job search skills and to
acquire the employability skills that employers look for.
The Professional Training placement team works in collaboration
with colleagues in other departments, such as the Careers Service
and the International Relations Office, to prepare students for
their placements, ensure they have excellent professional and
personal skills and receive the best learning opportunities. Each
year, awards are presented to students and companies, including a
Professional Training Placement Student of the Year award, whilst
returning students are encouraged to share their experiences with
first- and second-year students.
Mr Herrmann added, Employability at Surrey also extends to
the classroom where many degree programmes are accredited
by professional bodies. We plan to ensure more students go on
placement, have access to professional careers support from our
Careers Service and develop employability skills throughout their
learning journey at Surrey.

Food Science and Microbiology
There is an important association between
microbes and food. Some microbes are essential
for the production of food and beverages,
whereas others can destroy crops and cause
disease by contaminating the food chain. On
our Food Science and Microbiology degree
programme, you will learn how beneficial
microbes can be used in food production and
how harmful ones can be prevented from
causing damage and disease.
Our reliance on a supply of safe food, together
with the economic problems that arise from crop
damage and food spoilage, mean that graduates
from this programme are in high demand
by the food and beverage industries. The
combination of modules covering microbiology,
food composition, food analysis and quality
assurance provided by this degree programme
equip you for such a career.
For their research project, students on the Food
Science and Microbiology programme have
recently chosen to investigate the molecular
biology of Campylobacter and associated foodpoisoning mechanisms, the effect of water on
microbial growth in food, microbes used in
probiotic yogurts, bacteria in meat and microbial
contaminants of baby milk formula.
