297-8804 Our American Cousins

The Mid-West in the United States is considered to be the breadbasket of the nation. It’s the
heartland where conservative ideals have deep roots. Visiting there recently gave me the
opportunity to talk with some of the people and hear what they have to say about Canada.
I noticed that Mexico gets a lot of press coverage in the US these days. Tensions are high
about immigration laws and drug smuggling. By contrast Canada was never mentioned
once. No one has any idea who the head of state is in this country or that we might have any
concerns of a significant nature. Canadians are considered to be surprisingly polite people,
bland, peaceful and without assertive qualities. Although this generalization about us is not
new the extent of the blankness does appear to be of epic proportion

about where they are and what they’re doing across the border. The Americans, by contrast,

don’t seem to have a clue about us in any respect at all. Their assumptions about Canada are
not only ignorant but bordering on blindly stupid. Mind you, this lack of apprehension isn’t
restricted to Canada alone. The US seems to be living in a bubble that excludes everyone
else in the world but the people in their immediate vicinity. That’s a dangerous position to
be in.
When you’re used to being the biggest frog in the pond it’s easy to forget that the water just

may happen when they run low. Someday we may find that our American friends assume
that we’re just warehousing our commodities for them until they need them all themselves.
