The most enjoyable

and effective way
to teach reading
and writing!
Message from
Chris Jolly, Managing Director

Such was the success being achieved using Jolly Phonics around the world, that teachers
wanted to continue with the teaching well beyond the first year at school.
Jolly Grammar was developed to continue the structured teaching of English with fun lessons
for spelling, grammar, punctuation and dictionary skills. Now a 3-year programme that
continues to grow, the aim is to enable children to be clear and confident communicators.
Together, Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar provide comprehensive teaching materials and
methods for the first 4 years of literacy teaching. Teaching these skills in primary school,
rather than secondary, is a change which is becoming more widely supported, for instance in
the new National Curriculum for England.
Let us look forward to this teaching giving children the best start in English.

How to get started

with Jolly Phonics
in the first year
of teaching.

Teaching with Jolly Phonics begins

with learning the 42 letter sounds.
As the programme progresses, the other 4 key
skills are taught. Once children have learnt the letter sounds
and some tricky words they can then begin to use the Jolly
Phonics decodable readers and learn the alternative ways that
vowels can be written.

How does Jolly Phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly

Phonics teaches children the five key skills
for reading and writing.

Letter Sound Order

Jolly Phonics teaches the letter sounds in 7
groups of 6 sounds. The 42 sounds are
taught in a specific order (not alphabetically).
The first group has been chosen as it makes
more simple three-letter words than any
other 6 letters. This enables children to
begin building words as early as possible.

start for improving spelling.

Tricky words have irregular
spellings and children learn

The most dramatic improvements to result from using the Grammar 2 Pupil and Teachers
Books will be found in the childrens writing. After completing the Grammar 2 Pupil Book, the
children will spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary, and have a clearer
understanding of how language works.
In their first year at school, Jolly Phonics Pupil Books teach the children to write
independently, by listening for the sounds in words and choosing letters to represent the sounds.
This skill enables the children to write pages of news and stories. It is a joy to read their work
