Review & Motivation
Good Morning Students!
What was our last discussion?
What role does the heart play in
supporting life?
Have you ever experience a moment
when your heart beats fast?
Cite some things that causes why your
heart beats fast.
Today we are going to experiment
about the different variables affecting
our heart rate. What are these
variables? Lets find out! But, before

will say different.

that we will unlock terms first.

Unlocking Difficulties
1. Variables not always the same
2. Rate- done during a particular period of
time
3. Hypothesis- an idea that is not proven
4. Conclusion- a final decision
5. Experiment- something that is done as
a test

Students Activity

These are the following steps that you

will follow in order to have a good
scientific experiment or a valid
conclusion.
Scientific Method Chart:
1. Formulate a Problem
2. Formulate Hypothesis the positive
(Ho) the negative (H1)
3. Gather Data/Experiment
4. Conclusion
Our Problem for todays experiment is
Does exercising affects a persons
heart rate?
Now, these are the different variables
that we are going to test.
When the person is walking
When the person is running
When the person is jumping
Formulate Hypothesis
Positive Hypothesis: There is a
significant effect on the persons heart
rate after exercising.
Negative Hypothesis: There is no
significant effect on the persons heart
rate after exercising.

VI.

Experiment Data Collection and Analysis (20 min.)

Teachers Activity
The purpose of todays experiment is to
measure your heart rate before and

Students Activity

after exercise.
May I ask you class, Do you know how
to measure a persons heart rate
without using any apparatus for
measuring? (Teach them ho if not)
(Group the students into 2 groups)
(Give them the chart that they will
answer, Lab Sheets that they will follow
and prepare the stopwatch)
Choose 3 among your members who
will be the one to conduct the exercise
and to be measured. Only 3 persons
who will perform those exercises and
the other members will take note the
data on the chart, measure the heart
rate through the pulse and others will
handle the stopwatch

Data Collection Chart:

hypothesis)

Data Analysis (5 minutes)

Let the students start their discussion

Yes or No

Grouping

Perform the experiment

(students will follow the steps

written on their Lab Sheets and
answer the Data Collection Chart)
A. Find your pulse by using your
first and second fingers of your
right hand at the base of your
left thumb at the wrist. Or, you
can find your pulse on your neck
at the point that your jaw bends.
B. One person will use the stop
watch while the other measures
pulse.
C. First, measure your pulse while
at rest. Count the number of
heart beats in 30 seconds.
Multiply by 2 to calculate the
heart rate per minute and record
it in the chart.
D. Conduct the exercises e for 1
E. Immediately after 1 minute of
exercise, take your pulse for 30
seconds. Multiply by 2 to
calculate the heart rate per
minute and record in the data
table.
F. Follow the steps again to the 2nd
and last person to complete the
data table.

decide their conclusion based on

their data

Students will discuss in their

group their gathered data and
finalize their conclusion written
on their data collection chart

VII. Discussing Conclusions (10 min.)

Teachers Activity

Students Activity

Now its time to present your data

Each group will present their data

gathered and their conclusion

Do you agree/disagree with the

findings that have been shared?
Are there any other conclusions
Summarize the findings of the 2
groups
Highlight any misunderstanding and
errors observed during the
experiment
VII.

Homework
Teachers Activity

Post the Chart

1. Explain briefly how you come up
with a valid conclusion.
2. Does this experiment significant in
our daily life? Why?
3. What are the things that should be
put in mind to have a good
experiment?

Students Activity
Students will answer independently
at home.
