formats.

NETS*S Standards:

ISTE 4. a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation.

Overview
The focus of this lesson is showing students the adventure they can have utilizing the internet, within the realm of
safety. Students will connect that safety on the Internet is just as important as safety in the real world. They will
also discuss what problems arise from not being careful on the internet, and what can be done to prevent those
problems.

Essential Questions
What places are safe to travel to on the Internet? What three steps should the students take to assure theyre
following safety precautions? Do you know what terms Internet, online, and website mean? What do you want to
know about searching for websites online?

Assessment
1. In groups, students will use the Internet to go on an online adventure. Each individual will then illustrate a
picture of their favorite part of where they went to show their peers, during the group presentation.
2. Students will then answer questions about Internet Safety during their presentation to the class.
Students will be graded by a rubric. The components to the rubric will include if the student followed instructions
correctly for all the steps in the activity, and also if they could explain what they learned about Internet Safety
during their presentation.
Resources
Students will have to use search engines to find what websites they want to see. The students will not need any
prior knowledge to complete this, because I will demonstrate. I will search for a website, while the students follow
along and complete the actions on their own computer. Then, they will complete the project on their own. The
students will have a handout of the rules of safety to remember while they go on their own search.

Instructional Plan
Preparation
First, I will ask the students what they know about the Internet and going online. I will explain to the students that
they are going to take an online trip, and ask them to explain what rules they go by when going on a real trip. I will
then show the students a video explaining the rules of Internet Safety, so they can compare to safety rules they
follow when going on trips in real life. We will also discuss what websites are safe and useful to use.

Management
Because all students need to use a computer, I will start the lesson in the computer lab. I will assign the students
to small groups, so they can work together and choose a place to visit. After the computer component is over, I will
move the students back to the classroom, so they can present their drawings.

Instruction and Activities

I will be demonstrating the activity before the students complete the activity on their own. The students are
working in groups and as an individual to complete the activity. They will need to help others in their group to
assure they are following the Internet Safety rules. The students will complete illustrations that show their favorite
part of where they went, and explain what they learned from their virtual trip.

Differentiation
The groups I put students in will contain a mixture of learning styles and strengths so, they will be able to help and
support each other in different areas. I will also check in with the groups throughout, to assure all students are
having a chance to fully participate in the group discussion and choices.

Closure and Reflection

The groups will present their projects, and they will be prompted about what they learned or thought was
important. After the presentations, I will ask the students to repeat the three rules of Internet Safety, and we will
discuss what can happen if those rules are not followed. Then, we will discuss what they enjoyed about the lesson
and if they understood the concepts, and if not, what points they missed or want to know.
