Mrs.

Brownlees Kindergarten
Welcome!!!!
This week your child will complete one of the most
important milestones in his/her life-the first day of school! I
understand that you and your child may have met this day with
excitement or apprehension (or a little of both) and I hope the
following information will help you know what to expect in
kindergarten this year and answer any questions you may have.
I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My name is
Mrs. Tish Brownlee. I taught kindergarten for 7 years in Smyrna,
Georgia before moving to Tennessee with my husband and two
daughters. Since our move to Tennessee, I have been at Smyrna
Primary teaching my favorite grade!! I am looking forward to
working with your child this year and helping him/her to achieve
his/her full potential. I hope the next few pages will answer any
questions you may have.
Kindergarten is a very special time for children and I
intend to make it enjoyable and memorable for each child. Before
we know it, May will be upon us and we will see the growth,
academically and developmentally, of each child. I am truly
looking forward to a great year getting to know your child as well
as you.

The ABCs
of Mrs. Brownlees Kindergarten

Attendance: Attendance is taken daily. Please make every effort to have your child
at school each day and on time. I do understand that children get ill or may have a
family emergency. Please send a written note of explanation with your signature and
dates of absence the next day your child returns to school. Doctor notes may also be
sent in for an excused absence. Please do not write these notes in the agenda.

Backpack: Please make sure that your childs bag is clearly labeled with his/her
name. Kindergarten students will have bag tags placed on their bags identifying how
they go home each day. Please keep these on backpacks throughout the year.
Breakfast: Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 6:50-7:20.
Birthdays: I respectfully ask that cupcakes are not sent in to school if your child
has a birthday during the school year. Items such as a donated book or puzzle are
great alternatives and can be used throughout the year by all students.

Car rider: If your child is a car rider, you will be given a sentence strip from the
office to be displayed in your car window. No one can pick up a child without this
sentence strip. It is important to know that if you sign your child out from the office,
you must show proper identification.

Donations: Throughout the year I will ask for donations of items we use most
frequently. It is not required that you make a donation, but it is greatly appreciated.

Emergency Contacts: Please keep emergency contacts and phone numbers

current. If something changes throughout the year (address, phone number, work
number, etc) please let me know in writing. The office will be notified as well.

Fundraisers: Our school participates in fundraisers throughout the year.

Participation is voluntary. Money from fundraisers is the benefit of the entire school.

Good Behavior and good choices are important on our classroom and school.
Please refer to the agenda for more information about Paw-sitive behavior system at
SPS.

Homework: I strongly encourage parents to read with their child for 10-20 minutes
every night. There will be math homework and take home readers that relate to our
reading lessons in the classroom. There will also be a nightly reading log as part of
your childs homework. More information will follow when we begin home work.

Important: Changes in transportation must be made in writing.

Arrival after 7:30 is considered tardy. Dismissal begins at 2:30. Car riders must
have a sentence strip displayed in the car window. These items are important enough
to be mentioned again!

Job: I believe that each childs job is to learn how to be responsible for
themselves and their belongings.

Keep up: Keep up with that we are doing by checking your childs folder every
night! There may be important papers for you to sign and return.

Lunch: Student lunches are $2.00 a day. If your child brings a lunchbox, please
label it with his/her name.

Money: Money sent to school for lunch or field trips must be placed in a sealed
envelope. Please write the amount, childs name, room number (105) and purpose of
the money clearly in the front. I am not responsible for loose money- all money should
be placed in an envelope. I will not handle lose money.

Newsletters: Every month I will send a newsletter home letting you know what we
will be covering in class. There will also be a list of dates of upcoming school
functions and well as important school dates. Newsletters are also placed on my class
webpage.

Our Children: I have two girls of my own, but during the school year your
children become my children too!

Parent Conferences: We will have parent conferences two times throughout the
year. I will send more information later on in the year.
Parent Lending Library- Our school has books and other resources for YOU to
check out!
Feel free to ask about this as there are great books as well as games you can check
out to use at home.

Quick good-byes leave dry eyes. In order to establish our routine quickly, please
do not walk your child down the room after the first few days. I strongly encourage
independence this way!

Rest: Each day we will have rest time. Please send a mat labeled with your childs
name for this. Please no extra blankets or pillows as space is limited. This will be
phased out as the year progresses.

Reading logs: There will be a reading log on your childs agenda. Each night when
you read with your child, simply initial the box with the date in it. I give surprises
to the students who have read consistently each night during nine weeks. Please
keep this in your childs agenda as I do check them in the morning.

School address and phone number: Smyrna Primary School 200 Walnut Street
Smyrna, TN 37167 phone: 615-904-6720

Toys: Toys are not permitted at school. Please check your childs backpack
to make sure toys havent found their way into the bag!
Tardy: The school bell rings at 7:30. Arrival after this time is considered a
tardy. Please try to have your child at school on time as we begin our day after
the bell. It is disruptive to the classroom to have late arrivals.
Transportation: Any change in transportation must be in writing. Unless we
receive a written note, your child will go home the way you stated at the beginning
of the year. Your child will be given a plastic tag with his/her transportation
information on it. Please make sure they have this badge attached to their
backpack every day.

United: Together we are untied in doing what is right for the children.

Visitors: Visitors are always welcome. Please sign in and out at the office in
the visitors log and receive a nametag. All visitors must show I.D to enter the
building.

Wednesdays- This is the day of the week that we will have a folder going
home with your child's classwork and any notes we have for you such as
newsletters, etc. Please review what is inside and return any papers requiring a
signature the following day. Please remember that kindergarten is very hands-on
and much of our work is on journals for the year.

Exciting experiences: That is what kindergarten is all about!

Yearlong learning: The fun never stops!

ZzzzzOur rest time is usually 20-35 minutes! We will

gradually phase this out later on in the school year.
