Motto behind joining the MS program at your University is my wish to contribute

towards research and development in the field of Nanotechnology either through

academic or industrial participation. I believe graduation to be necessary to get
expertized in an area of Science and Technology. This would give me the practical
low down I require along with the leading edge in technology.
During my School days, I had strong inclination towards Mathematics and Physics,
particularly the part dealing with electricity. I used to relate the functioning of
almost every gadget with the concept I learnt and end up with some complex
solutions. This triggered my fascination towards electronics and motivated me to
choose electrical engineering as the area of interest as an undergraduate.
After School, I joined the most prestigious technical institute in India Indian
Institute of Technology, after getting selected among 5% of the total candidates
(around half a million) who appeared for the entrance test. This is the place where I
began to understand the idea behind everything related to electronics. I was
introduced to concept of microelectronics and its applications in other fields. As
Gordon E. Moore rightly predicted about doubling the components on an integrated
chip every two years, the transistors will go on diminishing their size and so I
believe that this area will always have the potential of research. The prediction is
completely based upon the evolution of technology and the demand for going nano.
Courses like Physical Electronics, VLSI fabrication technology, Analog and Digital
electronics, microelectronics, Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems have
given me in-depth knowledge of the very basic semiconductor physics to very
complex microprocessor. For every new topic introduced in the mentioned fields,
transistor remains the building block. I was amazed with the power of this basic unit
and this heightened my interest in the field of integrated Circuits and System and
the solid state electronics. Continuing my interest, i will be taking VLSI Design as an
elective in the coming semester.
During my college days, I managed to balance the coursework as well as extracurricular activities. I have been near the top of my class since school and currently
in top 10 of my batch. I was awarded with certificate of excellence by All India
Senior School Certificate Examination in Mathematics among 0.1 % of the millions
of candidates. Currently I am the Vice Chairperson of IEEE Student branch at IIT
Ropar and experienced in organizing many workshops, Competitions and lectures in
collaboration with other leading research centers and industries. I have been an
active member of a social group Enactus and helped in creating employment among
rural people with my team. Being one of the best institutes in the field of electrical
engineering, IIT provided me various opportunities of theoretic and pragmatic
learning of not only the technical but the humanities courses as well.
During my 3 months internship at Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), India, I
worked on simulation and comparison of advanced transistors with various 2D and
3D configuration. I designed and simulated a new configuration of junction-less
transistor and compared it with junction based transistor of similar configuration.
The results are currently under review. This has given me enough understanding of
the manner of evolution and modification through which transistors are going right
now and will be going in future. I have also done 2 months internship at Institute for
plasma research, Gandhinagar, India, where I designed Multi-channel trigger device

for parallel trigger of IGBTs. The circuit has been proved to generate output signals
with minimum delay. This has provided me an immense practical knowledge of
hardware implementation using optimum IC parameters.
Currently, I am working on my final year project with two other group members on
Nanocrystal embedded flash memory using FINFETs, under Dr. Ravi Shankar R.
Velampati, Asst. Prof., IIT Ropar. We are planning to simulate and fabricate a better
device in terms of size and data retention. I wish to continue my research while
pursuing MS at your university.
University of Maryland at college Park is at the top of my priority list for pursuing MS
in USA. It is known not only for its world class research facilities but also the
graduate program in computer and electrical engineering. I am certain that I will be,
if admitted, will be learning from the highly experienced and world class faculty and
might get chance to contribute to their research work. I am extremely fascinated
and inspired by the research works of Prof. John Melngailis in the field of solid state
electronics as his projects are somehow related to my interested areas and the
projects done. I am pretty sure that I will learn here technical skills along with
intellectual discipline.
My goal after getting admitted is to pursue an advanced research in the field of
Integrated circuits and systems/ Solid state devices not only through coursework
but also by participating in one of the ongoing projects and contributing to it by the
largest extent possible from my side.
I believe that my strengths are my background, skills and the motivation to work
hard and in a team. Leading a technical and social organization at college level has
strengthen my confidence. I hope to be considered as one of the deserving and
creditable applicant at your university.
