Argumentative essay

Nowadays an increasing number of people are getting aware of the detrimental effects of
industry on nature. Our negligence has led to numerous ecological problems and the
environmental issue which is my greatest concern is the pollution in my hometown. The
reason is the fact that I live in this area and I am constantly exposed to its unhealthy
environment. Moreover, my mother, who is a doctor, has told me about the various
diseases caused by pollution.
It is the air in my hometown that is the most contaminated. Every day many detrimental
chemical substances are being reported.
The sea also suffers from both the waste products poured into it and the petrol leaks from
the passing oil tankers. The pollution has put the lives of many animal and plant species
in the nearby lakes in danger.
The main reason for this disastrous ecological state is the fact that both the plant and the
town are situated in lowland and the sea breeze spreads the contamination in all
directions. Furthermore, the technologies of the plant are outdated and unreliable. The
local authorities should take this issue into account.
In my opinion, there is no prospect of improving the situation in the near future. There
are not enough funds for efficient measures to be taken. Besides, the plant is too
important for the countrys industry to close down.
However, if we want to preserve our health, we should demand that certain actions be
implemented. For example, the plant must be equipped with purification systems and the
most unreliable technologies modernized. Furthermore, there should be stricter safety
measures in order to reduce the risk of breakdown. Additionally, greater sanctions should
be applied against contamination of the sea. The pollution of the air can also be decreased
by planting more trees.
In conclusion, Id say that in out striving for economic progress weve unnoticeably put
our lives in great danger. Contamination can neither be ignored nor concealed any longer
and the only thing left to do is face the needed steps to fight it.

It is often said one of the most important things for us, as people, is our past and therefore
we should keep it more zealously. But do we really have to invest more money in what
was years ago or in the present? On the one hand, there is a strong argument for keeping
our past alive longer. It is related to great times, events and people. It also includes
fascinating pieces of art - musical masterpieces, inspiring architecture, etc. That is why
we should spend money on the past - since we have to preserve it for the future
generations who will admire it and surpass their ancestors. On the other hand, people
should invest resources in the present as well. Since we are living now, we have to stick
to the reality, which surrounds us. We should aspire to become better people, improve our
lives and make innovations which also need funding. For these reasons it is worthwhile
contributing to what is now. On balance then, I feel that it is best for our society to reach
an equilibrium in preserving the past heritage and the present values. Only thus will it be
possible to ascertain a successful future.
Informal letter / email
Dear Sam,
Im so happy that Im finally hearing from you. Its so nice to understand that youve
managed to save some money I envy you. But I also realise how confused you must
feel in front of this dilemma.
Firstly, Im not sure that spending the money on an expensive holiday is the best decision
you can make. Of course, everybody needs to have a rest; so do you. I know pretty well
that you had a busy year at school and you were under stress. It will be great if you can
relax from all this.
On the other hand, personally, I think its not better to put the money aside to buy a car.
Isnt there a good bus or train service where you live? If you have a car at college, your
friends will take advantage of you while you will be giving them lifts.
In my opinion, its a good idea to spend part of the money on a cheap holiday, for
example, somewhere in the countryside, and to put the other part aside for a used car. I
dont think that youll need a flashy new car as you wont be driving long distances.
Ill be happy if my suggestions appeal to you. Write to me and let me know what you
have decided to do.
Best wishes,
Sara

Why does older generation complain that we, young people, eat the wrong food take no
exercise, and dont look after our bodies? In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.
To prove that our generation is going to live longer and be healthier, Im going to ask you
one simple question. Do you know one person who follows a diet? Who goes regularly to
the gym? Who works out every spare minute? Oh, thats right a lot of our friends are
actually like that. Almost everyone is talking about what he or she eats and drinks.
Almost everyone is talking about his or her body. And all that is just the beginning. Even
our parents are following diets. Even they have already started to work out.
A lot of people of the younger generation are doing exercise and they have been keeping
fit since they were in the fifth or sixth grade. They started to go to the gym when they
were in high school. All that leads to just one conclusion the young people of today are
likely to live longer and be healthier than any other generation.
A better education, more nourishing food, more intensive and varied exercise, medical
advances no wonder were going to be the healthiest generation ever.
Report
Introduction
The aims of this report are to provide an overview of my participation in the exchange
programme Italy and my exchange partners previous stay in my home country.
About my visit
Everything was perfectly organized. I stayed at the place of Jean Luca, who was in charge
of the exchange program. I was invited to take part in a lot of events, which were held
especially for the occasion for example, fancy dress parties and cocktail parties. I was
given the change to visit a lot of interesting historic spots and do some sightseeing all
around Italy. The programme involved a few theatre visits to plays, I had never seen.
The comparison
Both visits (to my home country and Italy) have their advantages and drawbacks. I tried
to mark off the main ones and here they are.
1. More social events were offered in Italy. That is why their part of the programme was
better developed than in my country.
2. On the other hand, all the points included in the exchange plan didnt have the
intention to make me acquainted with the local culture, which can be regarded as a big
disadvantage.
3. I wasnt given the change to socialise with new people as the programme was intense.
Taking this fact into consideration, we should reckon that the pauses between events we
contemplated were actually a great idea.
Conclusion
To recapitulate, I will draw attention to the fact that the exchange programme I
participated in was very beneficial and expanded my knowledge about the county and the
local traditions and customs.
Review

If you doubt whether you can see a dinosaur these days, I can assure you by telling you
about the Natural History Museum in London.
This impressive museum is one of the biggest in the world. The idea of its foundation was
sir Hans Sloanes, who allowed his significant collection to be put in a museum by the
Government. Initially, the collections of dried flowers and skeletons of animals and
humans were put in a building, which was later set on fire. Afterwards, a big part of the
collection was said never to have been recovered. The work around the new building was
completed in 1880 and the new museum was opened in 1881.
Despite the age of the institution, many collections have a great historical as well as
scientific value. The museum is divided into four differently coloured zones, in which
you can see everything information about our planets, dried flowers, different types of
rocks and fossils, models and skeletons of all animals and birds from all over the world,
and everything about the human body. However, the museums most impressive area,
which it is most famous for, is the one with the skeletons and models of all dinosaurs
scientists know.
Personally, I find the Natural History Museum the most fascinating museum in the world.
I could definitely recommend visiting it since it is not only a place where you can go
sightseeing, but it is also one of the most famous centres of research in the world.
Essay : ideal of successful life
Ask a thousand people what their idea of successful life is and you will get a thousand
different answers. Some think they have to be rich in order to be a success. For others
professional realisation is more important than idling around in a luxurious house or
spending money on expensive cars and yachts. Yet other people have understood that the
support of their family and friends is the thing without which they can fully enjoy neither
their wealth nor their job. In my opinion, all these matter because to be a success means
to be in harmony with yourself and with the people around.
I think, however, the first priority for having success in life is your relationship with your
family and friends. The mere fact that someone cares for you and always stands by you
can be considered a success. No one, however rich and educated, can say they have
achieved this highest state of human well-being if they have neglected the ones near and
dear to them.
Being well- educated, finding and getting the job you like best, putting your heart into it
is also of great significance. If you have to do something you either dislike or cannot do,
no matter how well- paid you are, you will hardly be happy and satisfied with it. You will
probably feel there is something missing and that is the delight and pleasure which
favourite activities give us. Doing what we like is one of the things that allow us to
consider ourselves achieved the ultimate goal.
Still, there is something else to be added; its importance cannot be underestimated,

because having it you can cure most diseases, receive a better education and thus get a
better job. And this thing is money. The power it gives, some people say, is the greatest
success. However, I cannot agree with this statement. Of course, money helps but it is not
the only thing that counts in life.
To sum up, to be a success means not just to have large sums in the bank, not just to get a
university diploma or make a career; it is not even just to have a lot of friends. It is a
unique combination of all these ingredients. Si, I think, there are hardly people in the
world who could say they have achieved it completely.

If you are not sure how to answer this question then you should go to the science
conference organised every year. I myself went to it this year and was very impressed.
There was plenty of information and a lot of new topics. Whats more, I met really nice
people there. We were communicating in English, so we didnt have any problems. We
were able to practise the language and to learn many interesting things from the others.
There was a career test, at which we were provided with useful information about
different jobs. I heard some extremely good suggestions.
As it had been promised, there were some breath taking experiments. I hadnt really
realised that science could be so much fun. On the negative side, a thing that annoyed me
was that the room was overcrowded and not everyone could see properly. But I cannot
complain about the food. It was delicious and free of charge. However, the conference
took place too far from the town this was definitely a disadvantage. I suggest the next
year they manage to find a nearer place.
To sum up, I will highly recommend that you should attend the science conference next
year, because I am sure you wont regret it.
