Objective
-

II.

To verify the use of caliper as measuring device

Materials needed
-

Vernier Caliper
Aluminun Cylindrical cup
Tripple beam balance

III.

Procedure
1. Examine a vernier caliper carefuloly. Determine and record the length S of
the smallest division on the main scale, the number n of division on the
vernier scale, and the least count of the instrument. Practice reading the
scale by setting the zero nof the vernier scale in various places.
2. Take a zero reading by closing the jaws of the vernier caliper. Note that
this reading must be subtracted with a proper sign from all subsequent
readings. Measure the diameter and the length of the aluminum cup and
record the reading. Make a sketch of the setting of the instruments as
shown in figure 2.3 that shows the position of the zero vernier scale
relative to the main scale.

3. Examine a micrometer caliper carefully. Determine and record the length

S of the smallest division in the linear scale, the number of revolution of
the sleeve required to advance one division in the linear scale, the number
division on the circular scale, and the least count of the instrument.
Practice reading the scale by moving the screw along the linear scale.
4. Take the zero reading of the micrometer caliper by allowing the projecting
end of the frame to touch the end of the screw. Remember to subtract
zero reading with a proper sign to all subsequent readings. Measure the
diameter of the glass ball and record the readings.

5. Measure carefully the diameter of the coin, first with a ruler, then with a
vernier caliper, and lastly with a micrometer caliper in centimeters.
Compare the results by calculating the difference between ruler and
vernier caliper measurements, ruler and micrometer caliper
measurements, and vernier caliper and micrometer caliper
measurements.
