Description:

Demonstrate good photography and image editing

skills. Incorporating color and typography into a
poster layout with an original photo.

Date:
2/2/13

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: I wanted to make people stop and

think about their impact on the environment. I picked

a quote to help showcase that thought as well.

Process: I started by looking online for quotes

by my favorite author Mark Twain. I sketched out

different ideas of how to incorporate the sketch.
Then I chose a tetradic color scheme. I went to
capture a high quality photo with good light, sharp
focus, and nice composition. But of course it rained
the day I wanted to shoot, so I decided to use the
clouds to my advantage. I used a Nikon D3200
camera. I then brought the photo into Photoshop
and use these specific editing techniques: levels,
vibrancy, saturation, and color balance. Then I
designed an 118.5 layout that included my photo
and text. I incorporated my color scheme title, color
swatches, and color names into my design. I used
the eye dropper tool and adjusted the color in the
color picker to match a little more accurately. I use
a bricks theme and made a banner across the top
with my quote in it.

Web Page

Program(s)/Tools:

TextWrangler & Photoshop

Objectives:

To showcase that a company specializes in Event,

Architecture, People, and Commercial photography
and also in basic web design.

Process:

I created this web page using only TextWrangler.

After I revised all my content and inserted my image,
I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I
then used the colors from my logo as the colors for
my web page. I found the colors by using the eye
dropper tool on Photoshop. I also added an image of
a camera as my main background for the web page. I
then changed my fonts to Droid Serif and Open Sans
Condensed. I added padding around the logo and
text so that they would not be too close to the edge
of the web page.

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

To inform my audience about the Star Wars Theme

Park. I am showing them through the brochure what
is available to do at the park and what we believe in.

Process:

I set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign. I split

my layout into three sections with the concept that
the two outer sections would be the flaps of the
brochure and the One middle section would be the
body of the brochure.I used circles throughout the
brochure to create repetition and flow. I deliberately
used white elements to create contrast against all
the black. For the image of the stormtrooper I used
the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to
remove the background of the image. I then used
the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather,
shift edge and apply contrast to the outline of the
stormtrooper. The changes I made in the refine
mask dialogue box made a softer image that didnt
look so sharp and cutout against the brochures
background. I then placed the Stormtrooper into
InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap
my text around the Meet and Greet paragraph. I
created the logo in Illustrator using the shapes tool
(rectangles) and then I placed it into InDesign.

Montage
Description:

two or more images, and the use of typography.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

For those struggling with depression and wanting

inspiration. I wanted to show that even though there
is darkness in peoples lives you could always find the
light.

Process:

I used Photoshop to create a mask on my images,

keeping the pixels that I wanted without damaging
the image. I used the brush tool in in order to merge
my trees with my background image of the rain. I
used 2 images of tress to get the tree line to look
natural. I also added rainbow and clouds on the
right side to add more of an element of light to the
picture. I matched my font color with the different
greens found in the foliage. To make my quote stand
out I gave it a slight back shadow.

Business Card
Description:

using a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Illustrator & InDesign

Objectives:

I learned how to properly brand a company using a

unified letterhead and business card design.

Process:

I created the logo and icons using Adobe Illustrator

and linked them to Adobe InDesign. I made the
QR code online and linked it to my business card. I
used the rectangle tool to create the front and back
outline of my business card. I then copied/ pasted
the logo and contact information to this page. I
enlarged the logo on the front of the business card
and shrunk the contact information on the back
of the business card. I made sure the important
information was enough space away from the edge
of the card. I also brought over the stroked lines and
icons to have more repetition.

I learned how to properly brand a company using a

unified letterhead and business card design.

Process:

I created the logo and icons using Adobe Illustrator

and linked them to Adobe InDesign. Then I
positioned the logo in the top right corner of my
letterhead. I then typed in my company name on the
left hand side, to look as if the logo of the camera
was shining on the companys name. At the bottom
I used a stroke with thin and thick lines to add more
lime to the page for repetition. I also kept the icons
at the bottom for unity and repetition.

Event Ad

All-American

Description:

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
HP LaserJet 500 color M55
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process: I scanned the picture of the hamburgers

from an issue of Time magazine. Then I used Words
crop tool to crop away the rest of the photo from
the 2 hamburgers I needed. This allowed me to
be able to manipulate the burgers on the page to
way I wanted them. I decided to leave the colored
boxes behind the shapes and pull out those colors
to give it a nice complementary feel using green and
red. I chose fonts from the internet to give the Ad
some variety. Now I am confident that if it was ever
needed I could design on Word.

Objectives:

How to create appealing logos in Adobe Illustrator.

Process:

After sketching out several different ideas, I

narrowed it down to a final 3. Then I took those 3
and took it to Illustrator to design it. I finalized them
and then took it to Facebook for a vote and then I
got votes from other designers as well. It was pretty
evenly split for the votes, so I chose the simplest one
and refined it. I refined the colors and the alignment
of the words.

Objectives:

To reach future graduates, who want to have a

competitive edge by becoming strong leaders, and
to inform them about how the leadership conference
will help them.

tomorrows leaders gain essential leadership

of Vouant Communications to discuss
breakthrough leadership techniques, while
cultivating attributes of leadership that will
market to any employer.
Conference is available to graduating seniors.
Space is limited.

Process:

I first created four different sketches of potential

layouts. Then I used my sketch as a guide to create
this layout in Adobe InDesign. I used grey boxes
for repetition and contrast. I used a pure black
background to create more contrast. I used the
picture as a focal point to guide your eyes in an L
shape to the body copy. I left plenty of white space
and kept my body copy small. I was given the image,
logo, and content for this flier.

Program(s)/Tools:

Objectives:

To create a desirable work of art to be given as a

wedding present.

Process:

I used Photoshop to create a mask on my images,

keeping the pixels that I wanted without damaging
the image. I used the brush tool in in order to merge
my texture with my background image of the couple
kissing in front of the temple. I also added the image
of the proclamation and using the masking tool to
have it fade seamlessly over top of both images. The
project from drafting to completion took roughly 2
hours to complete.
