THE BRITISH NATIONAL THEATRE OF AMERICA, in conjunction with

SUPER SUMMER THEATRE, is pleased to announce upcoming auditions for
its production of THE FOREIGNER, to be performed at Spring Mountain
Ranch State Park as part of the SUPER SUMMER 2010 program.

THE FOREIGNER
Two Englishmen, Charlie and Froggy, arrive at a fishing lodge in rural
Georgia. Charlie, unbearably shy, is petrified at the thought of being left
with strangers with whom he may have to converse and as a means of resolving this problem,
Froggy concocts a cover story for Charlie, stating that he is a Foreigner from an exotic land with
no understanding of English. Farcical fun ensues as the other unsuspecting characters speak
freely of their secrets in front of Charlie, into a hysterical climax where good overcomes all,
including the Ku Klux Klan.

Open auditions will be held on the following dates. Auditionees should attend one date only.

REHEARSALS:
Rehearsals will begin in July 2010. A rehearsal calendar will be posted at the auditions.
Rehearsals are expected to be Monday through Friday in the evenings, but could change based
on cast availability.

PERFORMANCES:
THE FOREIGNER will perform for 9 performances between Sept 9 and Sept 25, 2010.

CONTRACT:
Non-Equity. All roles will receive a small stipend.

Charlie Baker 

30‐55. English.  A proofreader for a Sci Fi magazine, Charlie is extremely shy and dull. He has a hard time 
talking with people.  He has come to America for the weekend at the request of his dying wife.  He is the 
Foreigner of the piece and the other guests of the lodge think he cannot speak English. 

Staff SGT Froggy LeSure 

35‐55 English (Cockney) A demolition expert and member of the Royal Army, Froggy comes to America 
once a year to train with US troops. He has known Betty Meeks the owner of the lodge for years. Foggy 
is confident and cheerful. He brings Charlie to the lodge for peace and quiet and introduces him as a 
foreigner, so people will leave him alone. 

Betty Meeks 

50‐80. Southern (Georgia). A widow and the owner of the fishing lodge where the play takes place. She 
has never left her rural home and dreams of exotic lands. She is excited to have a real “foreigner” in her 
lodge.  She mothers her guests. She is unaware of the plan to take over her failing business. 

Owen Musser 

30‐50. Southern (Georgia). A mean and nasty piece of work. He is the property inspector of Tilgham 
County Georgia ,he plans to condemn the fishing lodge, forcing Betty to sell the place at next to nothing 
to David Lee . He is a crude and volatile man and a member of the local KKK. 

Reverend David Marshal Lee 

25‐40. Southern. He is the fiancé of Catherine Simms. He seems to be a genuine concerned and caring 
man, but is really a snake in the grass. He plans to marry Catherine and use her money to buy the fishing 
lodge and convert it into the new headquarters of the Tilgham KKK.  He manipulates Ellard to make him 
seem stupid and incompetent. 

Catherine Simms 

20‐30. Southern. A former debutante and heir to a vast fortune. Catherine is staying at the lodge with 
her brother Ellard and fiancé David. She is bored with her life and unsure about her fiancé; although she 
has no idea of his true mean spirited racist nature. She longs for someone she can talk to. 

Ellard Simms 

20‐30. Southern. Catherine Simms younger brother, and heir to half the family fortune. In order to 
inherit his half Ellard must show some kind of social competence. He is an overgrown youth and is very 
simple. He is extremely insecure and perhaps a little slow, but what he lacks in brains he makes up for in 
heart.
