Assignment 2: Title: Index Properties of Soil

1. For a given soil, the following are known. Gs=2.74, moist unit weight= 20.6
kN/cu.m., and the moisture content is 16.6 %. Determine the following: (a) Dry Unit
Weight (b) Void Ratio (c) Porosity (d) Degree of Saturation (e) Weight of water in Kn
to be added per cubic meter of soil for 100 % degree of saturation.
2. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0.0089 cu.cm. The dry
weight of the sample is 0.014 grams. Water is carefully added to the container so as
not to disturbed the condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the
combined weight of soil plus water is 0.0174 grams. (a) find the void ratio of the soil
in the container (b) Find the porosity (c) Find the water content (d) Find the Sp. Gr.
Of soil particles. (e) Find the saturated unit weight (f) Find the effective unit weight
of the soil (g) Find the dry unit weight of soil.
3. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume 0f 0.30 cu.ft. The dry weight
of the sample is 31 lb. A volume of 0.051 cu.ft. of water is carefully added to the
container so as not to disturb the condition of the sand. If the sp.gr. of sand is 2.72,
determine the: (a) porosity (b) Degree of Saturation (c) Bulk Specific Gravity (d)
Absolute Specific Gravity.
4. The weight of the moist soil as excavated from a hole is 895 grams with a volume
of 426 cu.cm. After drying its weight was only 779 grams. Of the dried soil only 400
grams was poured into a vessel in a very loose state, and its volume is
subsequently determined to be 276 cu.cm. That same 400 gram dried soil was then
vibrated and tamped to a volume of 212 cu.cm. (a) Compute the minimum dry unit
weight. (b) Compute the maximum dry unit weight. (c) Compute the relative density
of the soil sample.
5. A sample of sand has a moisture content of 14 % and a unit weight of 18.88
kN/cu.m. Laboratory test on dried sample indicated values of emin = 0.50 and
emax= 0.85 for the densest and loosest state respectively. Specific gravity is 2.65.
Determine the ff: (a) Void Ratio (b) Degree of Saturation (c) Density Index.
6. A sandy soil has a natural water content of 27.50 % and bulk unit weight of 19.20
kN/cu.m. The void ratios corresponding to the densest and loosest state are 0.51
and 0.87, respectively. Assume Gs=2.70. (a) Determine the in-situ void ratio (b)
Degree of Saturation (c) Relative Density of the soil.
7. For a sand sample, the maximum and minimum possible void ratios were
determined in the laboratory to be 0.94 and 0.33 respectively. The relative density
of the sand is 60 % and the moisture content is 10 % the specific gravity of solid
particles is 2.65. Determine (a) Moist Unit weight of sand (b) Maximum Dry Unit
weight (c) Minimum Dry Unit Weight
