He learned the Vietnamese language as well as Koho, the language of the Montygnard people in the Central Highlands, where he lived for two years. He made friends with
the farming people there, helping them improve rice farming, and introducing baby chicks and honeybees.
In 1971 Ted had completed his two years of service and had married a young Chinese girl. They decided to stay
on for one more year to complete the work that had been started. One week later Ted was shot and killed by
invaders that entered the house.
Many people came forward to praise Ted for his commitment to peace: ABC News; Dayton Daily News;
Troy Daily News; Messenger Magazine; Curtis W. Tarr, director of the National Selective Service System; and
Keith Weidner, Ted's high school teacher. A ballad about Ted, "Brave Man From Ohio, was written by Andy
Murray. Joy Moore wrote a book illustrated by Jim Guenthner titled Ted Studebaker, A Man Who Loved Peace.
Two of Ted's brothers, Gary and Doug, are writing a book about his life and work. Doug (Class of 1971) read a
tribute to Ted and accepted his award on behalf of the Studebaker family.
Larry Dehus graduated in 1965. He graduated from Otterbein College in 1969. He received his Masters
Degree in Biology and Biochemistry from Wright State in 1974. Larry started his career with a short teaching

Greenville National Bank Offers Help With Student Loans

When it comes time to prepare to send your first child off to college, it can be pretty overwhelming.
There are so many choices to make: What college? Two-year or four-year? Full-time or part-time or
online? How to pay for it?
With so many decisions, its hard to know where to start. Begin by making an appointment to meet
with your childs high school guidance counselor. Its best to start this conversation by your childs sophomore year. Your childs guidance counselor can answer a lot of your questions and give you guidance
regarding college visits and majors.
Its always a good idea to start saving for college as soon as possible. Some start saving as soon as
their child is born. Not a bad idea. Its never too soon, but dont let feeling like youre too late stop you
from putting back whatever you can now.
Once you get to your childs senior year in high school, you will need to file the FAFSA form.
According to Student Aid Application Services LLC, completing a FAFSA is the first step in applying for
most federal, state, and college-provided financial aid for students. It stands for Free Application for
Federal Student Aid because its filed with the U.S. Department of Education, but most state-sponsored
and college-sponsored aid requires the same FAFSA filing, so its not only for federally sponsored student
aid as the name might imply. The FAFSA is used by aid providers to determine the amount of the student's
Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is the amount that they expect the student's family could contribute toward the student's college education. EFC varies from student to student since its based on the
specific financial situation of the student and often of the student's parents as well.
Once your child has been accepted and chooses a college, you will need to make an appointment with
the universitys Financial Aid Office. This usually happens during the summer after high school graduation. They will go over your FAFSA report with you and let you know the amount of federal funded loans
your child may receive. They will also tell you what the report says they expect your family to be able to
contribute.
You might need to pick yourself up off the floor after hearing your Expected Family Contribution
amount. Take a deep breath, and know you are not alone. There are private student loans available to fill
the gap between federal loans and the amount you can actually contribute. Often the Financial Aid office
has a list of private loan providers, but those are not your only options.
Perhaps you would feel more comfortable applying for these loans through your local community
bank. Its possible! Greenville National Bank now offers private student loans with competitive rates
through iHelp. Simply go online to greenvillenationalbank.com and click the student loan apply now
link. If youd like to speak to one of GNBs student loan experts, call Todd Rauh or Mike Batten at 937548-1114. Greenville National Bank is proud to offer student loans to help local students make their
dreams come true.
Dont let the details overwhelm you. There are plenty of folks out there to help. In the meantime, enjoy
the journey.

BNC Summer
Solstice Exhibit

To Feature Work
of Wil Hershberger
All are invited to take in the
new art gallery exhibit of photographs by naturalist Wil
Hershberger at Brukner Nature
Center.
Wil has been a naturalist
most of his life. In the late 90s
he became an avid natural
sounds recordist, collecting the
voices of frogs and birds, as
well as amazing photography in
the field and of the subjects. In
late summer, a new orchestra
caught his attention the
insects and turning his microphone to these songsters led
Wil along a path that culminated in the creation of a book and
audio CD, The Songs of
Insects, a celebration of the
wonderful scrapes, shuffles,
lisps, ticks and chirps that have
been called epic, seminal and
simply outstanding.
This exhibit is Free with
paid admission to the Nature
Center, which is located at 5995
Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey

This Weeks Opinion Outlet

I personally believe its time to wake up, America!
After the police shootings on July 17th in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I quickly went to my
electronic source Google. From July 2015 to July 2016 there have been 124 shooting deaths
and 154 wounded victims.

Upcoming Fairs
& Festivals

When do we decide that enough is enough?

Can you imagine if our country didnt have police departments? Every living person would
fend for himself or herself. I wouldnt give us over a decade to eliminate ourselves.
So far, the lone wolf shooter from Missouri was slain in a shoot out when the police received
a call of a suspicious man walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle. There was
no talking. Just shooting. Three police officers were killed one black and two white during the exchange of fire.

53rd ANNIE OAKLEY FESTIVAL

July 26-31, 2016
ThE GAThErING AT GArST
July 30 & 31, 2016

The Black Lives Matter movement can now put their theory to rest. The shooter didnt care
what color the police officers were. Its been stated many times that all lives matter. Police
go where theres trouble, and a lot of times its in black communities.

ThE MIAMI COuNTY FAIr

August 12-18, 2016

Lets look at Chicago. To date, there have been 2,176 shooting victims in that city.
Huffington Post has reported the police have seized 3,300 illegal firearms. Gun offenders
quickly return to the streets because sentences for those caught carrying illegally are too lax.

ThE DArKE COuNTY FAIr

August 19-27, 2016

With these astounding numbers, why dont we make a test area out of Chicago, then take
these facts and numbers to our lawmakers?
If someone could now help me down from my soap box I will tape my mouth and hands
with duct tape.
THis Weeks bOTTOm line: The only solution is for us all to get on our knees and
pray to God to stop this hatred and evil. Amen.

The 88th annual Bradford Pumpkin Show will celebrate the 150 Year Sesquicentennial of the
Village of Bradford, beginning on October 2, with a new event to the Show this year. Instead of the
usual House & Property Decorating Contest, residents are asked to decorate one of the light poles
that line Miami Ave. and Main St.
The theme is Travel Through Time With Us As Bradford Celebrates 150 Years. Poles are to be
decorated to depict anything pertaining to the last 150 years history, fashion, inventions, sports,
entertainment, famous people, or anything else that has meaning to the last 150 years. There will be
$1,500 in total prize money awarded to the winners of the decorated poles; however, if you have fall
decorations, pumpkins, and lights that you would like to put up on your home or business, you are
encouraged to still decorate to add to the festivities.
There are three divisions within the event:
1) individuals, families, friends, businesses, churches, clubs, or organizations. There will be
six winners in this division, each receiving $150.
2) elementary class or organization, with one winner of $150.
3) Grades 6-12 class, organization, or sports team, with one winner of $150.
A Peoples Choice award of $150 will also be awarded by popular vote. Votes for Peoples
Choice will be cast at Pattys IGA, where donuts and cider will be available, sponsored by the
Pumpkin Show Committee. A random drawing of $150 will be held from all entries not winning
another prize.
Decorations will be judged Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at dusk. They must be torn down by noon
on Sunday, Oct. 9, by noon.
Poles will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Call now if you are interested in participating. Chairpersons for the event are Glenna Curry, 448-2897; April Brubaker, 417-3049; and
Rita Leis, 901-3758.

~ Pole Decorating rules ~

1) Entries must be pre-registered and have pole number by September 23. Pole number must be
visible in your display for judging.
2) All entries must use some live pumpkins in the display. They will be judged in part on the creative use of pumpkins.
3) Display must be lit. There is a plug at the top of the light pole to light up your display with your
lights.
4) One pole per entry; however, a group or organization may enter one particular pole.
5) Entry must be ready to be judged on Sunday, Oct. 2, by 7 p.m.
6) Those entering may not consult with the judges.
7) All winners will be notified no later than Monday, Oct. 3, by 7 p.m.
8) Winnings may be picked up at the secretarys office after the parade on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Also,
awards will be placed on the winning display.
9) AbSOluTEly nO TAPE may be used on poles. May use zip ties to hold materials to the poles.
10) Display items must be kept out of the way of bOTh SiDEWAlk AnD STrEET TrAffic.
11) Decorations may only go 8 feet up the pole.
12) Display must be torn down by Sunday, Oct. 9, by noon, or all items will be discarded.
