NURS 300 Introduction to Theories and Concepts I

NURS 431-Transition to Professional Nursing Practice
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to rediscover his or her
personal philosophy of nursing as it exists upon the completion of the baccalaureate nursing
program.
Student Approach to Assignment
This assignment allowed me to reflect on my thoughts and beliefs throughout my experience in
nursing school. Through an assignment that was conducted during my sophomore year, I was
able to witness the progression in my thought and philosophy. Furthermore, I was able to
recognize educational experiences that impacted my values and reflected my growth both as a
student and a nurse. Reflecting back on an assignment that I did during my sophomore year
brings nostalgic memories of the determination and passion that I had for the nursing. Now, I end
my last semester having even more passion and love for the profession while my educational
experiences has given me confidence to provide quality care throughout my career.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio
This assignment was included in my portfolio because it symbolizes my growth progression as a
nursing student and encompasses my values and principals regarding the nursing profession.
Additionally, the objectives identified in this assignment assists in highlighting the skills
provided in my practice and provides the educational foundations established during my
undergraduate studies.

Critical thinking
Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional practice.
In this assignment I was able to explore multiple theorist that influenced my care.
Nightingales environmental theory explored how I altered the environment to
provide optimal health. I was able to demonstrate how her work influenced my
practice by discussing my use of evidence-based practice and research. Furthermore, I
was also able to identify Orems Self Care Deficit theory as a foundation that guided
my practice. I was able to determine the individualized need of the patient thus
navigating the appropriate implementations to restore health. The use of these
theories guided my professional practice and improved patient outcomes.

Leadership
Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as member of the
interdisciplinary health care team.
o In the paper, I demonstrated the roles of the nurse within the collaborative health
care team. The nurses ability to provide adequate care and advocate for the
patient helps improve the outcomes and prevent fragmented care. Furthermore,
communication was a key factor identified in providing efficient collaborative
care.

Professionalism
Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical situations
that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and advocacy for patient wellbeing and preferences
The paper addressed the ethical principles that guides my nursing practice. I
was able to identify beneficence and autonomy as two key ethical health care
principals that were incorporated into my care during my clinical experiences.
It is my moral obligation to implement beneficence and autonomy throughout
my career as a nurse and continue to hold these, and other ethical principles as
the foundation of my care.

Culture
Integrates knowledge of cultural diversity in performing nursing interventions.
In this paper, I discusses the importance of incorporating the patients culture
into their care as well as the significance of being culturally competent. I
acknowledged the need to explore my own cultural beliefs and values to
become aware of my different perspectives. Furthermore, I recognized that
nurses must work to meet the patients cultural needs to uphold their beliefs
and values.
