Dear Friends,

You will be glad to know that we have been doing our part to boost the economy. To handle an increasing
number of manuscript submissions in Biblical Studies and Islamic Studies, we have recently hired three new
acquisitions editors: Adam Walker, in Islamic Studies, Yael Landman-Wermuth in Hebrew Bible/Jewish Studies, and
Matthew Steinfeld in New Testament/Early Christianity. We are delighted to welcome them into the Gorgias family!
We are very excited, not just because such talented people are joining our team, but also because Gorgias is
expanding its reach into an increasing number of fields. While many of our submissions are still in production, we
encourage you to look at the editorial board of our forthcoming Islamic Studies series, Islamic History and
Thought (page 3), or our burgeoning new series in Heritage Studies, Regenerating Practices in Archaeology and
Heritage (pages 22-23). Our two Biblical Studies series, Biblical Intersections and Gorgias Biblical Studies, have also
been producing a steady stream of volumes (pages 7-9).
Of course, it goes without saying that we have not been idle when it comes to providing the very best in
Eastern Christian Studies. For those interested in the history of the Church of the East, David Wilmshurst has
translated Bar Hebraeus The Ecclesiastical Chronicle into English for the first time (page 11), and Peter Zieme has released
Altuigurische Texte der Kirche des Ostens aus Zentralasien, a documentation of Old Uigur texts with special relevance for the
interaction of Christianity and Buddhism (page 12). Readers with more of a theological bent will appreciate Andrew
Hayes translation of Ephrems hymns, Icons of the Heavenly Merchant (page 13) or Seven Icons of Christ, edited by Sergey
Trostyankiy, an Eastern Orthodox perspective on the seven ecumenical councils of the Chalcedonian churches (page
13).
As many of you know, 2016 is our fifteenth year in business, and we anticipate a lot of development for
Gorgias over the next few months. We hope you will join the fun by keeping up with us on Facebook or signing up
for our mailing list (at www.gorgiaspress.com)!
Happy reading!

HUMANIST COMIC ELEMENTS IN
ARISTOPHANES AND THE OLD TESTAMENT
By Benjamin Lazarus
The use of comic elements in story-telling and literature is
not simply the provenance of one particular culture, but is
instead as much a natural and recurring technique as having
stories about death, sex, and wonder. Lazarus compares and
discusses comic elements used for didactic purposes in two
separate literary traditions: Old Testament narrative and
Aristophanic Comedies.
Aristophanic Old Comedy and Old Testament narratives
come from two completely different traditions of ancient
literature, from very different cultures, but both make use of
humour to define what it means to be human within the
hierarchy of the universe. Each chapter analyses one
example of comic elements in an Old Testament story,
together with one Aristophanic play: Numbers 22 (the story
of Balaam and his ass) and Peace, the life of Samson in the
book of Judges and Birds, Jonah and Frogs, and Tobit and
Wealth.

BEHOLD! MY SERVANT

An Exegetical and Theological Study of the Identity

and Role of the Servant in Isaiah 42:1-9
By Stphane Beaulieu
Scholars have long debated the identity of the servant
in the first servant poem of Isaiah. In Behold! My
Servant: An Exegetical and Theological Study of the Identity
and Role of the Servant in Isaiah 42:1-9, Stphane A.
Beaulieu provides a fresh reinvestigation of the
identity of the servant in Isaiah 42:1-9 and its role
among the other servant poems.
Beaulieus critical evaluation includes an examination
of other relevant servant passages in Isaiah
particularly in Second Isaiah. Detailed comparisons
reveal recurring commonalities and differences
among these passages. The result is a thorough
linguistic, intratextual, and thematic framework for
interpreting the identity and role of this servant.

Wisdom at Qumran
A Form-Critical Analysis of the Admonitions in 4QInstruction
By Daryl Jefferies

Although Gods motives are frequently referenced in

the analysis of biblical narratives, and stated
programmatically in theological treatments of the
Hebrew Bible, there are no comprehensive works
examining divine motive. This study fills this critical
gap by studying the more than 500 passages that
contain an explicit statement of divine motive.
Following the methods used in the examination of
motive statements in the legal materials and psalms,
the study provides a comprehensive survey and
analysis of divine motive across the Hebrew canon.

Jefferies provides background on wisdom forms, the key Qumran

sectarian texts, and wisdom studies related to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

SOTERIOLOGY AS MOTIVATION IN THE

APOCALYPSE OF JOHN
By Alexander Stewart
John did not write the Apocalypse in order to provide
a detailed time-table of events that would unfold
thousands of years in the future. Instead, John wrote
to motivate his hearers to reject idolatrous
compromise with the surrounding cultural and
political institutions and overcome through
repentance, worship, witness, perseverance, and
obedience. This monograph employs Stephen
Toulmins argumentation analysis to study Johns
explicit and implicit motivational argumentation and
to argue that the two primary grounds for Johns
argumentation are soteriological. Hearers are
motivated positively by the promise of future salvation and negatively by warnings of future judgment.

John the Solitary on the Soul

Translation and Introduction
by Mary Hansbury

In this work, Kees den Biesen explores the

literary, intellectual, and theological mechanisms at work in Ephrems writings with the
specific aim of identifying the exact nature of
his symbolic thought and evaluating its
contemporary relevance.

Ephrem, the most celebrated writer of the

Syriac Church, presents a wide range of
theological themes of sickness and healing.
The main part of the book deals with the
causes of spiritual sickness and the process
of healing, and the way in which Ephrem
places them in the divine history of
salvation.

In this treatise, John the Solitary (ca. 390)

enters into a dialogue with two disciples
who have brought him their struggle against
the passions in the life of the inner person
(barn gawwy). Johns description of the
life of the soul is outlined here in a framework of the stages of the spiritual life.
Included is his analysis of the passions,
showing very little if any Evagrian influence.

NEW IN GORGIAS NEO-ARAMAIC STUDIES

NEO-ARAMAIC AND ITS LINGUISTIC CONTEXT
Geoffrey Khan and Lidia Napiorkowska
This volume contains papers on the Eastern NeoAramaic dialects (uroyo, North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic
and Neo-Mandaic) and the languages in contact with
these dialects in Western Asia. The papers make important contributions to the documentation of the Neo
-Aramaic dialects and to the understanding of their
historical development. There is a great diversity across
the Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialect area, which,
compounded by the fact that many of the dialects are
now highly endangered, is a great challenge for
researchers engaged in the task of their documentation
and in the investigation of their historical background.
This diversity, however, also enriches the field and the
documentation presented in this volume clarifies many
aspects of their historical development and relationship.
The papers on language contact show that the historical
development of Neo-Aramaic cannot be fully
understood without taking into account the structures
of the languages from other language families that are
spoken in the area.

NEW IN GORGIAS STUDIES IN EARLY CHRISTIANITY AND PATRISTICS

THE MYSTERY OF ANOINTING: HIPPOLYTUS'
COMMENTARY ON THE SONG OF SONGS IN
SOCIAL AND CRITICAL CONTEXTS

Texts, Translations, and Comprehensive Study

By Yancy Smith
This work presents the first ever English translation of
the Georgian, Greek, Paleo-Slavonic, Armenian and
Syriac texts as well as many patristic quotations. It
demonstrates how Hippolytus used the commentary to
define the identity of Hippolytan Christians against
Jews and rival Christian groups. Hippolytus interpreted
the Song as a complicated love triangle between Israel,
Christ and the Gentile Church. He represented Christ
the Logos in various richly symbolic ways: as the
feminine Sophia, who lived with Solomon, as the
transgendered maker of wine (like Dionysus) that
nurtures the Church with his breasts, as the victorious
Helios who rides across the sky, supreme over the
nations. The commentary returns often to the topic of
the post-baptismal mystery of Christic anointing. This
work opens up the world of third-century rivalries
within the Jesus movement.

NEW REFERENCE BOOKS

THE SYRIAC DOT

A Short History
By George A. Kiraz
In his new book, Dr. Kiraz peels back the story of the
dot layer by layer to discover its origin and use in Syriac
orthography. Beginning with dots on resh and daleth,
the book moves on to the development of plural dots,
and then examines the use of dots to distinguish between homographs and the rationale behind dot placement. Kiraz conducts experiments with modern scribes
to construct a theory of the origin of the dot. He also
discusses the development of the dot to mark hard and
soft consonants, and later, silent letters.
From these early uses, dots became an increasingly important part of Syriac writing. Kiraz traces the beginnings of using dots to mark gender and tense, as well as
increasingly sophisticated sounds, to the dot's role in
signifying vowels, vowel sequence, accents, and punctuation marks. Finally, the book examines the dot in
the medieval and modern periods, providing some insight into the role of dots when producing Syriac and
garshuni manuscripts.

CLASSICAL SYRIAC PHONOLOGY

Applying Corpus Linguistics for Word

Sense Possibility Delimitation Using
Collocational Indicators

This book provides a description of Classical

Syriac phonology based on fully vocalized
biblical texts and the detailed comments by
medieval Syriac grammarians. In addition to
a description of Syriac consonants and
vowels (including vowel quantity and stress),
there are chapters on the comparative
Semitic background of Syriac phonology and
the grammatical features of the pre-classical
inscriptions, and comparison with both
eastern and western varieties of Jewish
Aramaic. The modern dialect of Turoyo is
also examined, and two appendices discuss
the traditional pronunciation of West Syriac
and the pronunciation of Modern Literary
Syriac, and offer a sketch of Turoyo
phonology.

By Todd Price
A key issue in New Testament interpretation is the method used in determining the
meaning of words and phrases. Moving
beyond a traditional view of dictionary
definitions, this book shows how an
analysis of large corpora of Hellenistic
Greek can advance our understanding of
lexical semantics. The book traces the
development of corpus linguistics in
dictionary making and demonstrates how
this approach can be applied to GreekEnglish lexica.

NEW IN PERSPECTIVES ON PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGIOUS THOUGHT

COMMON GROUNDS WITHOUT FOUNDATIONS

A Pragmatic Approach to Ethical Disagreements

Across Cultural, Philosophical, and Religious
Traditions
By David Kratz Mathies
In Common Grounds without Foundations, David Kratz
Mathies offers an alternative, fallibilist model of moral
reasoning rooted in the American Pragmatic tradition.
Additional resources drawn from Chinese philosophy,
Jain epistemology, modern philosophy of mathematics,
and the Gadamerian hermeneutical tradition serve both
to corroborate the argumentation and to provide
examples of continuities in reasoning that cross the
boundaries of disparate traditions. Ultimately, an
analysis of our best epistemic practices provides us
with prima facie biases in favor of both diversity and
free speech to be concretized in institutions like
human rights and democracy.

NEW SERIES: REGENERATING PRACTICES IN ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE

COLLABORATIVE HERITAGE MANAGEMENT
Edited by Gemma Tully and Mal Ridges
Bringing together practitioners within archaeology,
anthropology, urban planning, human geography,
cultural resource management (CRM) and
museology, the volume aims to build on the existing
debate and reflect how heritage discourse is being
increasingly re-theorised in terms of experience.
While exploring the organic, evolving and
unpredictable nature of working with communities,
the volume focuses on emerging discourse which
represents a shifting balance of power as oncemarginalised stakeholders are taking control of the
constitution, representation and management of
heritage as they experience it, both with or without
professional facilitation. Thus, by critically engaging
with heritage studies and acknowledging the benefits
of diversifying the voices involved in the representation and management of the past, the volume calls
on readers to embrace a view of cultural and natural

NEW SERIES: REGENERATING PRACTICES IN ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE

HOW DO WE WANT THE PAST TO BE?

On Methods and Instruments of Visualizing Ancient

Reality
Edited by Maria Gabriella Micale and Davide Nadali
Taking into consideration the way the ancient
architecture has been represented through old and new
mediathus starting from the most ancient examples
of drawings up to the most recent computer-based
graphics and creationsit is reasonably time to ask
how we want to represent the past and, as a
consequence, why we want it that way or another. The
analyses in the book also point to the recent debate on
the nature and use of 3D reconstructions and virtual
reality with the creation of new models and informatics
devices: does new technology solve the problems of
interpreting and visualizing the archaeological
evidences? Beyond technical and aesthetic differences,
essays show how archaeologists are still dealing with
the same set of problems in projecting a reconstruction
of what is either badly preserved or irremediably lost.

Ritual Dynamic Structure

By Roy Gane

The Land of the Hittites

By John Garstang

In this volume, Roy Gane builds a theory and

definition of ritual and a corresponding
methodology for analyzing specific rituals in
terms of their activities and the meanings
attached to those activities. Additionally, he
illustrates this methodology and its usefulness
for comparative studies by applying it to cult
purification in the ancient Near East.

This important summary of Garstangs

travels and studies in Anatolia (present-day
Turkey) is fully illustrated with nearly 100
photographs as well as maps and plans.
This account details the marvels revealed
by archaeology in ancient western Asia.

THE SUB-LOCO NOTES IN THE FORMER
P R O P HE T S O F B I B LI A H E B R A I C A
STUTTGARTENSIA
By Christopher Dost
In BHSs Masoretic apparatus, certain Masorah parva
notes are marked sub loco in order to refer the
reader to the corresponding commentary that was to
be found in the third volume of Massorah Gedolah.
Due to Weils passing, however, this commentary
was never realized. This volume builds on Mynatts
1994 analysis and classification of the Pentateuchs
297 sub loco notes by incorporating the Aleppo and
Cairo Codices. Dost evaluates all 414 sub loco notes
in the corpus of the Former Prophets, and evaluates
Weils contribution by comparing Weil's revision of
the Leningrad Codexs Masorah against the Masorah
of the Aleppo Codex.

JESUS MET
Edited and Translated by Sebastian
Brock, Reyhan Durmaz, Rebecca
Stephens Falcasantos, Susan Harvey,

The Gospels contain a number stories
about women whom Jesus met during
his ministry. Most of these women are
unnamed, but their stories were
important for ancient Christians and
continue to be so throughout Christian
history. In this volume, we collect five
verse homilies by the great Syriac poet
preacher, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) that
treat these encounters.

social history of fourth-century Egyptian Christians. Originally composed in Greek by a contemporary of Athanasius,
it is now extant solely in Coptic.
