CPRI Profile
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) set up in 1960 by the Government of India,
functions as a National organization for applied research in power sector and also
serves as an independent laboratory for testing and certification of power equipment.
CPRI is a member of Short Circuit Testing Liaison (STI) of Europe and is accredited by
M/s ASTA of UK. CPRI also provides consultancy services on various facets of power
sector. CPRI has expertise in the area of simulation, diagnostics, system analysis and
testing. CPRI laboratories have modern equipment needed for power system
simulation, short circuit testing, diagnostic of equipment, materials engineering,
seismic qualification etc.

About Earthquake Engineering and Vibration Research Centre

Earthquake Engineering and Vibration Research Centre (EVRC) is equipped with
Electrodynamic shaker system, which is capable of performing a diverse range of
vibration and shock qualification of equipment / components for electrical, electronics,
telecommunication, automobile, railways and aerospace industries and utilities as per
National and International standards. More than four hundred diverse range of
products are tested every year using electrodynamic shaker system. Product tested
includes, Relays, Energy meters, Breakers, Batteries, Capacitors, Electronics and
communication equipment/components, Automobile parts, Equipment/components
used in Aerospace,

Equipment/components used in Railways etc. EVRC is also

involved in R&D in the field of vibration and shock qualification.

About the Tutorial Programme

Vibration and shock are important in most engineering applications where the product
is exposed to operating environment, transportation and to possible vibration and
shock during service. The need to understand the effects of vibration and shock on
product reliability is paramount. Vibration testing is performed for a variety of reasons:
to determine if a product can withstand the rigors of its intended use environment, to
insure the final design will not fall apart during shipping, for environmental stress
screening to weed out production defects, or even as a form of accelerated stress
testing. Vibration tests are commonly used to improve the reliability of instruments,
sub components and equipment or a system.
This tutorial aims in making the participants understand basics of vibration, vibration
and shock testing using electrodynamic shakers and relevant codal provisions. The
tutorial is organised mainly to create awareness among designers, manufacturers,
quality assurance engineers and utility personnel about the importance of dynamic
qualification testing. Also to assist utilities in selection of equipment, energy meters
and relays meeting the dynamic qualification requirement as per various standards /
specifications. This tutorial provides a forum for the students to learn theoretical
concepts and testing techniques.
CPRI technical programmes are always a learning success!

Topics Covered

Overview of vibration and theory of dynamics

Concept of test fixtures

Vibration and shock testing using electrodynamic and servo hydraulic shakers

Codal provisions

Demonstration - vibration and shock testing on relays and energy meters

Who Should Attend

This tutorial is aimed at engineers from civil, mechanical, electrical, telecommunication
and related engineering fields who are involved in design of equipment and quality
assurance for dynamic loading. This tutorial will benefit all industries and electric power
utilities in selection of equipment meeting the dynamic qualification requirement.
