6d. Students know variation within a species increases
the like hood that at least some members of a species

Acquiring knowledge about this

element will allow students to
understand the harm that humans do to
the environment and comprehend the
importance of protecting the earth from
pollution.
Behavior:
Expectations will be reviewed with
students before the lesson begins.
Lessons are geared toward all learning
levels and are set up to allow for a
variety of learning styles.
Length of assignments and time
allotted for each assignment will vary
depending on student comprehension
of the harm that we as humans are
doing to our oceans.

will survive under changed environmental conditions.

2. Learner Outcome(s)/Objective(s): (What will students learn from this lesson? How will you
measure mastery of the outcome?)

Vocabulary: Students will use vocabulary

related to The Environment from Unit 6.

Culture: Students will read and discuss readings

La conservacin de Vieques which talks about
the problems citizens from Puerto Rico are
facing due to the past existence of United States
military camp in one of their islands Vieques
and the explosion of bombs in the Caribbean
Ocean at the end of World war II.

Grammar: Students will review the future

tense (el futuro) uses the same endings for all
ar, -er, -ir verbs.

Grammar: Students will review regular verb

conjugation, how endings are added to the
infinitive.

Grammar: Students will review the present

Indicative tense, conveys a sense of certainty
that the action will occur.

History: Students will read and discuss about

important elements of the settlements of military
camps in the Island of Puerto Rico after World
War II.

Rationale:
The Learner Outcomes address the
state-adopted academic content
standards. Some of the vocabulary and
grammar review has been included
into the beginning of the period as a
daily routine (Reviewing yesterdays
lesson by going over homework).
Grammar and vocabulary is
incorporated into every lesson and it is
practiced daily throughout the entire
unit. Dividing the concepts and the
vocabulary and incorporating them
into our daily lessons, helps to keep
the students more interested in the
lesson.
This reading provides historical
information regarding Puerto Rico and
the damage caused to one of its
islands do to the presence of the U.S.
Navy after WWII. The concepts in
this story contribute to what we are
learning regarding the damage
humans do to planet earth.
.

3. Pre-assessment Activity: (Determine students abilities to achieve the Learner Outcome and
prescribe instruction accordingly. Consider: linguistic background, academic language abilities,
content knowledge, cultural and health considerations, interests and aspirations, physical
development, social development, emotional development. )

Rationale:

In order to assess what knowledge the students have

regarding Vieques, we will briefly discuss the effects of
pollution in our planet and how we as humans
contribute to the destruction of our planet (Weve been
learning about this matter throughout the unit). The
information will be useful for when we begin the
reading, students will be familiar with the vocabulary
being used in the reading because it is related to
Nature.
Students will express whether or not they think they are
harming their planet in any way and they will also
express what they believe they can do in order to better
help our planet.

Reviewing what the students already

know about pollution and how it harms
our planet will be helpful into
introducing the story about Vieques. It
will also allow me to start a discussion
about the things they can do to help our
planet become a healthier place to live.
It will help me extend a previous
discussion about how changing their
lifestyle and being more mindful about
the things they unconsciously do harm
the planet can actually help lessen our
contribution to polluting the earth.
This will allow me to see if students
understand the harm we unconsciously
do to our planet in order to continue
learning about solutions to prevent it.

4. Differentiation, Adaptation & Accommodation Strategies: (Based on the pre-assessments, modify

Learning Activities based on learner characteristics to meet the needs of ELL & special needs
students, highly achieving students and low achieving students)
Rationale:

In order to adapt this lesson for the lower level

students, they will be provided with more time to
complete assignments. Visuals will also be provided
(PowerPoint and Prezi presentations) to aid them with
the vocabulary being used in this lesson. Our daily
review will also be presented in a PowerPoint to allow
my lower level and English Language Learners be
better prepared to todays lesson and have the
opportunity to ask for any type of clarification in order
to continue the lesson. A Prezi presentation will be
utilized as a way to introduce the lesson in order for
them to have an idea of what todays lesson is all about.
Providing visuals and going over the previous lesson
will hopefully help my lower level learners ease some
of the misunderstandings or anything that they missed
from the previous lesson.
Providing students with plenty of examples of how we
as humans contribute to the harmfulness of our planet
will allow them to have a clear picture of the many
ways we as society, contribute to pollution.

Since our class is made up of students

with different learning styles, needs,
and abilities, differentiation is needed.
With the strategies noted and with the
help of visuals by using technology,
this will certainly allow the different
level learners a better opportunity to
understand and learn the lesson.

5. Resources: (Identify materials needed for this lesson accounting for varying degrees of skill level)

Rationale:

Computer
Projector
Screen
PowerPoint presentation (Homework review)
VAR (Vamos a Repasar) (PowerPoint)
Prezi presentation (Important points about
Vieques)
Grammar handout (Daily review)
Blue/black pen
Paper
Red pen (used to correct papers)
Textbooks
Exit ticket

A grammar handout which was

provided to students the day before,
giving them the opportunity to practice
their grammar skills, the future tense
(el futuro) which uses the same endings
for all ar, -er, -ir verbs. Regular verb
conjugation, how endings are added to
the infinitive and the present
Indicative tense, conveys a sense of
certainty that the action will occur. The
vocabulary and grammar worksheets
provided to the students will be
reviewed with the help of visuals. A
PowerPoint will be used not just to
review yesterdays lesson, but also
allow them to clarify any missed
concepts from previous lesson and they
will be able to check for understanding.
VAR(Vamos a Repasar) is a quick test
review given to students to check for
understanding on previous lessons, in
this case, VAR will be used to assess
students on Future tense expressions.
The Prezi presentation will be used as
an intro to the lesson on Vieques.
It will allow students to visualize and
understand where exactly is Vieques
located, its natural resources, its
culture, and it will also provide them
with a little bit of history of the Island
and why the presence of the United
Stated Navy on the island of Vieques is
so controversial.
Group discussions and activities will
allow students to become more aware
of the devastating situation Vieques is
going through due to the harmful
bombing in the Caribbean Ocean by
United States military. It will allow
students to analyze the Vieques

situation and develop ideas on ways to

help improve the situation in the island.
(Questions regarding the situation in
Vieques and how it is affecting its
citizens will be provided to the groups
and answers will be shared with the
rest of the class).
An Exit Ticket will be used to check
for understanding. Students will be
provided with the question Why is it
important to conserve and protect an
island like Vieques? Answering the
question will be their ticket out the
door!

6. Learning Activities: Explicit Teacher Instruction - (Explain, Model, Demonstrate, Check for
Understanding)

Check for Understanding:

Rationale:

Daily Review:
Revise Homework via PowerPoint presentation.
Students will revise their homework daily and check
for understanding on the lesson from the day before.

Having students do daily reviews by

revising their assignments from
yesterdays lesson helps establish a
routine that provides learning stability
to the students. It also provides me
with the opportunity to take role, go
over any missed concepts and check
for understanding of the previous
lesson.
Reviewing the homework Grammar
Exercises allows me to go over
anything that the students might have
missed and are having trouble with.
Allows the students the opportunity to
ask for clarification on anything that
they might be confused about. It also
allows me to go over and practice the
units vocabulary.

Grammar and Vocabulary: Teacher will review

homework using PowerPoint presentation. This will
help to check for understanding related to their
grammar skills needed in Unit 6, which are the future
tense (el futuro) which uses the same endings for all
ar, -er, -ir verbs. Regular verb conjugation, how
endings are added to the infinitive and the present
Indicative tense, conveys a sense of certainty that the
action will occur.
Vocabulary will also be incorporated in both the review
and the introduction to the lesson.
La conservacin de Vieques

Explain todays review activities and the purpose of

todays lesson and how it relates to previous lessons
regarding Nature.
Introduce todays lesson with the help of a Prezi
presentation which provides important information
about Vieques (the island that we will be learning about
in the lesson). Students will be reminded of the
importance of helping our planet become a better place

La conservacin de Vieques

The class discussion about the situation

in Vieques will promote the importance
of taking care of our planet and
becoming more aware of the harm that
we, as humans are unconsciously doing
planet earth. It will allow students to
analyze their daily habits and

to live and our contribution to our planet.

Following the discussion, we will do Popcorn
reading to read about Vieques in our textbook. Then,
students will be instructed to get in groups of three to
answer a couple of questions regarding the reading.
1. Where is Vieques located?
2. Why is it important to protect the islands
natural resources? And what can be done?
3. What were the consequences of U.S. military
exercises in Vieques?.
Check for Understanding: Teacher will monitor
students while working in their groups and check for
understanding and make sure that cooperative learning
is taking place during this activity. Teacher will walk to
each group and randomly ask questions related to the
reading to ensure that students are understanding the
lesson.
Exit Ticket: to check for understanding. Students
will be provided with the question Why is it important
to conserve and protect an island like Vieques?
Students will have to write down at least one reason of
why they think it is so important to take care of places
such as Vieques and what helpful ideas would they
propose to help places that find themselves in situations
like Vieques.

comprehend how they are harming the

earth by contributing to pollution and it
will also help promote better ways of
taking care of it ( which is what Unit 6
is all about, taking care of our
environment).
Exit Ticket
This activity provides students with the
opportunity to analyze the importance
of taking care of places like the island
of Vieques and independently develop
ideas of how to improve our problems
related to pollution. It will also provide
me with the information of what
important points theyve been missing
in unit 6.
During each activity, students will be
assessed with comprehension questions
and will be monitored for progress and
ability.

Check for Understanding: Students will be asked to

share their answers to the questions that they had to
develop during the group activity. Their answers to
these questions will help understand if there are any
issues or clarifications needed on the lesson.

7. Learning Activities: Guided Practice/ Collaborative Practice (Check for understanding and
provide feedback and re-teaching)

Check for Understanding:

Rationale:

Daily Routine:
Revising Homework via PowerPoint presentation as a
daily review helps students with comprehension and
check for understanding on the lesson from the day

This daily review provides students

with an opportunity to go over the
previous lesson and assure that they are
ready for the lesson that follows.

before. While revising their papers, students will be

constantly reminded to check for spelling and grammar.
Future Tense and Regular Verb Conjugation
Students know how and when to conjugate present
tense verbs in Spanish that have endings in ar, -er, and
ir. They understand regular verb conjugation and how
the endings of these verbs are added to the infinitive
and the present indicative tense. During the review,
students will be reminded of when to conjugate a verb
depending on the expression and grammar rules.

Allowing them to revise their work

daily will them master and improve
their vocabulary and grammar skills. It
will also allow them clarify any
concepts that they didnt understand
before. This will also give them the
opportunity to analyze progress and
comprehension.
Collaborative practice will allow
students to practice their writing skills
in the Spanish language and help
improve their grammar skills as well.

Check for understanding:

They will need to demonstrate understanding by
earning a minimum score of a 3 (5 being the highest
score) on their assignment.

8. Independent Practice: (Provide practice that supports the learning outcome. Note: Independent
activities are assigned assuming that students understand the concept well enough to work on their
own.)

There will only be one independent learning

opportunity during this lesson, it will be their exit
ticket for todays lesson. Students will be provided
with the question Why is it important to conserve and
protect an island like Vieques? and what helpful ideas
would they propose to help places that find themselves
in situations like Vieques.

Rationale:
Their ticket out the door will surely
promote and encourage independent
learning as well as awareness on the
importance of taking better care of our
planet.

Students will have to write down at least one reason of

why they think it is so important to take care of places
such as Vieques.
Check for Understanding:
Answers will be shared with the class and will be
reviewed on and discussed the following day.
9. Assessment and Evaluation: (Describe how you will assess and/or evaluate the students learning.
Describe differentiating assessment strategies you will use for ELL, special needs students, highly
achieving students and low achieving students.)

During the daily class activities, the grammar review,

Rationale:

and our lesson on Vieques, I will randomly ask

questions regarding the reading to ensure that students
have understood the reading on Vieques. I will also be
asking questions to the students during the group
activities to make sure that they understand the
importance of protecting our environment from the
effects of pollution caused by humans.
Students will be graded on their group assignment of
answering questions related to the reading. Answers
will be checked the following day during our daily
review (first 10 minutes of class). Their score on the
assignment will allow me to identify which students
need more practice and assistance with the lesson and it
will also allow me to analyze my teaching techniques to
better serve my students on future lessons.
Students will also be given credit for participation and
cooperation during their group activities.

Frequent comprehension checks will

help me measure the pace of the lesson
and determine how well the students
are mastering the concepts. Knowing
this information can allow me to adjust
the pace or include additional exercises
to practice a concept from the lesson on
Vieques.
My lower level and ELL students will
be carefully partnered with respectful
and caring classmates.

The length of the activities and assignments could be

adjusted for students who work at a slower pace or
additional time could be given if needed.

10. Closure: (Describe how students will reflect on what they have learned.)

By using an Exit Ticket, students will need to write

down an explanation of why they think it is important
to conserve and protect an island like Vieques that is so
rich in natural resources.
Students will have to write down at least one reason of
why they think it is so important to take care of places
such as Vieques and what helpful ideas would they
propose to help places that find themselves in situations
like Vieques.
Every students answers will be collected before they
exit the classroom.

Revised: 10/23/2008

Rationale:
Discussing with the students on what
they think about the devastating
situation Vieques is going through, due
to the harmful bombing in the
Caribbean Ocean by United States
military. It will allow students to
analyze the Vieques situation and
develop ideas on ways to help improve
the situation in the island. Students will
be able to relate the harm that humans
have done to the Island of Vieques to
the harm that we unconsciously do to
our planet due to our bad habits that
contribute to the planets pollution. It
will also allow them to develop better
ways of protecting planet earth.
