Our Mission
The clarinet is one of the most versatile and expressive instruments out there and we set out to make a VI that can
easily maneuver around the most technically demanding passages, while responding to intricate adjustments in
dynamics. All without sacrificing tone quality! We think the music-making community could use a monstrous virtual
clarinet like this one that doesnt buckle under the pressure of 32nd notes, while remaining unspeakably beautiful
performing whole notes.
Features
Patches
Herring Clarinet The MAIN patch, with all the bells and whistles
Herring Clarinet LITE Shares everything in common with the MAIN patch except that it is not chromatically sampled
this saves a ton of RAM.

6 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
3GB Hard Drive space

Sustain Mode
If in doubt about what youre hearing, just look up and double-check this
graphic. It will let you know exactly what articulation youre currently
playing!
Will enable a special borrowed round robin, which can be effective for
passages with lots of repeated notes/intervals.
Adds a concert hall convolution reverb to the instrument, and allows you to
set the wet/dry balance.
This refers to all sustained notes, including Poly mode and the two types of
legato (Slurred and Tongued)
Slurred Legato This is the default legato, so youll hear it by playing any overlapped intervals
on the keyboard (within an octave). With slurs the performer does NOT apply
any tongue to an interval.
Tongued Legato If activated from the Configure Page, you can apply a keyswitch or a CC
Value to Tongued legato. Tongued legato is OFF by default to save RAM. The
tongued transitions are perfect for that extra bit of realism basically what
you hear there is Jos gently rearticulating each transition.
Shorts
We recorded short and VERY short notes which can be triggered separately
by velocity or user definable CC. You can tell if youre hearing the staccato or
staccatissimo by checking the articulation indicator.
Trills
When activated, your virtual clarinet will perform a trill using some advanced
fancy scripting. You can define what KIND of trill (min 2nd, maj 2nd) in the
configuration page by setting the keyswitches. This button will lock the
instrument into Trill mode so it important to understand the difference
between this and the momentary keyswitch that can activate a Trill while
held. (see Trill keyswitch in Configure Page)

Controllable Elements
The expressive heart of this clarinet! Here you can view CC control over these
4 main elements. Custom control can be set in the Configure Page.
Dynamics Dynamic control of this instrument is truly breathtaking, and one of the
reasons development lasted so long. With the help of some sampling
gurus (looking at you Elan Hickler), we were able to phase lock two sets
of recorded dynamics of which you can morph between.
Vibrato The vibrato is subtle and sophisticated. We suggest you use it sparingly!
Its not the most common technique when it comes to the clarinet.
Flutter As the CC value increases, so does the intensity of flutter tongue effect.
Multiphonics
Ensemble Page
Andreas Lemke, our amazing programmer, came up with the concept for Ensemble Mode. The script
uses a series of complex round robins, pitch-shifts, panning, and timing adjustments to create a virtual
6-piece clarinet ensemble. There are several tools on this page to help get you the sound you want.
Randomization
This can help vary the accuracy of your virtual clarinet ensemble.
When the TIMING knob values (in ms) are higher, the ensemble
becomes less precise rhythmically. Similarly, when the PITCH value
move up, the players become less exact with their intonation. CHAOS
will further randomize both pitch and timing, so that the results are
less predictable
Ensemble Pan
Here you can alter the stereo spread of your ensemble. This can be a
useful tool if you want to place your clarinetists within a larger
orchestral template.
Players
Here you can customize the number of players you want in your
Herring ensemble by clicking each button to enable/disable. (Players
are panned according to their visual location in this group but within the
confines of the pan controls on this page.)
Configure Page
Color
Mysterious unlabeled button! This will change the color theme of the instrument.
Yay!
OSC
For users with Touch OSC, click this button to lock the CC settings to the
appropriate values. (See below for more info about Touch OSC)
Pitch
This is the amount (in percentage) of pitch randomization for any sustaining note
while in Solo mode.
Lag
True Legato has some inherent lag, because with every interval you are hearing
the clarinetist actually moving from note to note. This lag can make
programming/performing a little bit challenging, and everyone has a different
preference. Lag will adjust the start times of all legato samples, gradually
chopping down the transition until the value is 100, at which point the transitions
are no longer heard.
Trill Speed
You can adjust the speed of the Trills by turning this knob (displayed in milliseconds)
Speed Control
Tongue Samples
Short Dyn
Our proprietary system for speed control. Slower playing will achieve slower
transitions, which will elastically speed up as your performance does. If you turn
Speed Control off, you will save a lot of RAM!
By default this is OFF to save RAM. If you want to perform both Slur AND Tongued
legato samples, turn this on! You can trigger the tongued legato samples with
either the user definable keyswitch or the user definable CC.
Determines what controls dynamics for the SHORT group Velocity or the CC
assigned to Dynamics within the Configure Page. (Default for Dynamics CC is CC#11)

Allows you to select custom keyswitches on your keyboard for these 7 controls:

Touch OSC is a great tool that turns your iDevice/Android into a MIDI controlling beast! ...and we made a
template specifically for the Herring Clarinet (you can find it in the Documentation folder). For more info, setup
help and tech support for Touch OSC, head over to their website! http://hexler.net/software/touchosc
PRO TIP - for smooth, fast and accurate playing, hold down the sustain pedal (CC# 64)!
If you have an iPad or an Android tablet, Touch OSC is an amazing app that will get you advanced
Herring control within minutes. The setup can be a bit tricky but its worth it! Weve included our Touch
OSC template with the instrument.
Vibrato is a living, resonant, emotional thing. It cant stagnate for long or else it will sound artificial. Ride
those CCs to alter the intensity and amount of vibrato!
Well be posting a bunch of video walkthroughs and tutorials. Check our Youtube channel for details
