. CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.

Background of the study

Language has the most role in communicating. The existence of human

being never released from communication. According to Ronald Wardhaugh

(2006), An Introduction to Sociolinguistics: The function of language is tool
communication of people, either verbal or written. Language considered tool for
communication which is important for people, because by the language people
can get information that they need, besides it the people also can convey their idea
and opinion or suggestion through language.
According to Charles W. Kreidler (1998), in his book Introducing
English Semantics: A language is a complex system of symbol or signs that are
shared by the members of a community. It means that members of a community
have different symbol to share their language. The members of community also
can be considered as society.
The important role of language for people not only as media for expressing
self, feel, think also needed, but also as tool for integration and social adaptation
among people to develop their civilization. However, as we will see, speech in
almost any society can take many different forms, also different ways. Its
differential can be caused of different background, culture or social nature. If
people have the same native language they can understand what they speak one to

another, but when the people are not same native language they must feel difficult
to understand the language each other.
The globalization era nowaday, motivate the development of language
rapidly, especially language which come from foreign such as English language.
English language is international language which used to introduction in the
communication between country. At this time, language which must to mastery is
English language, because it is have an important role in communication among
country in the world.
Indonesia is one country which has active relationship and role with the
other country around the world. This relationship also can give positive effect into
the society. Positive effect can include new idea, activity, and new things.
Interaction among language in the world is impossible to avoid. One of the result
language interaction is language change. Language change which mostly occur is
the raises of new words in language vocabulary. It is the beginning phenomenon
which occur that called borrowing word.
Where two different languages have contact over a certain period of time
they will surely influence each other. Words might be taken over from one
language and are adopted to the other. This process is called borrowing.
The reasons for a language such Indonesia to borrow words from other
languages are mankind. The first, there are direct contact with another language.
Second reason is to show the education level which higher from the user of
language. It also means the people want to be called as modern people and shothat
they are smart or have high education. Other reasons is to make easier the user

of language to understand the meaning of words and terms which seldom appear
in the science, social, politics, law, and government world. The most obvious and
maybe also the most profound one is the introduction of new concepts for which
there are no suitable words in the task language.
Development of borrowing words nowadays are too rapidly. Indonesia
people prefer to use the words which are borrowed from English than Indonesia
language itself. It seems when they speak, they almost seldom use English words
than Indonesia words when they speak or have dialogue.
Borrowing words in Indonesia seldom find out in many kind of mass
media, either in electronic media or print media. One kind of mass media which
important is newspaper. In the newspaper we can find many article about politics,
economy, business, government and many others which mostly used English
borrowing words. It can consider that newspaper is being the important media to
socialize the new words in term of borrowing words. The borrowing words which
used in a newspaper make people who read it feel interest to understand and speak
this new word because these word give them modern taste.
The writer choose borrowing words for analysis because no language is
entirely pure, that all the languages are mixed. A language may borrow some
words from other language to fulfill the needs in extending the vocabularies in
one field or to enrich the vocabulary to be able to get along with development of
technology, information and the rapid communication in the Globalization Era.

So, the writer will study English borrowing words into Indonesia
language in the newspaper, especially in Jawa Pos daily newspaper, particularly
that of business communication features.

has been find out two kind process of Borrowings, they are Adoption and

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter, the writer will give explanation about theory which related
with borrowing words. It starts from the Linguistics and continue with
Sociolinguistics that describe about the relation between language and society.
Then continued by explanation about language change. The writer also give
explanation about borrowing word more specific in the last sub chapter II which
includes the categories of borrowing word. They are adoption and adaptation
process.

A.

Linguistics
When you know a language, you have the capacity to produce sounds that

signify certain meanings and to understand or interpret the sounds produced by

the others (Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman: 2006).
According to William O Grady, Linguistics is the discipline that studies
the nature and use of language. Linguistics shares with other sciences a concern to
be objective, systematic, consistent and explicit in its account of language. There
are some branches of linguistics, including Phonology, Morphology, Syntax,
Semantics and Sociolinguistics.

1. Sociolinguistics
Language is a part of society. Any discussion of the relationship
between language and society. According to Richard A. Hudson (1996)
in his book Sociolinguistics, he has described follows: sociolinguistics is
the study of language in relation to society. In this case, the writer also
agree to Hudson statement sociolinguistics is the study of languages that
happening in society and both of them have relationship other.
By the study of sociolinguistics we can understandfully how
language is used different place to place and among social classes.
Sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationships
between language and society with the goal being a better understanding
of the structure of language and how language function in
communication. (Wardhaugh: 2006)
In sociolinguistics, languages provide a variety of way of

saying

the same thing addressing and greeting others, describing things, paying
compliments. But it has to know where the appropriate place in using it
is. The different status, age and level education take an important role
in the way of people use a language.
The writer quoted from an article which is written by Setiono in the
Jakarta Post, Sociolinguistic aspect also pay significant role in
encouraging Indonesian to produce new word in their utterances. The
belief that English is a prestigious and internationally recognized
language can not be separated from the social values of the

language

community concerned. Therefore, if Indonesian have a positive attitude

toward English words, they are more likely either to borrow or code
switch them into their language in order to display their social status.
2.

Language Change
There is no single explanation for language change, nor can
every change be fully explained (Victoria Fromkin: 2006). No one
knows exactly how or why languages change. Of course, certain
changes may occur instantaneously for any one speaker. When a
new word is acquired by a speaker, it is not gradually acquired,
although

full appreciation of its possible uses may come slowly.

Language change is about language as a code, whereas appropriate to

its characteristics which dinamic and as a consequences contact with
other code, language itself change (Abdul Chaer: 2004). Cultural
contact may also to a large extent have an impact on language mixture
`or even language change.
Language change occur because the contact between two
language

or communities. It is can not observed when a language can

change. All natural languages change and language change affects all
areas of language use. Types of language change include sound
changes, lexical changes, semantic changes and syntactic changes.
The cause behind language change is the variation of use in the
areas of pronunciation and vocabulary. Such change, of course is not
restricted to phonology. The morphology and syntax of a language

10

change in the same way. A change divided into internal change

and

external change (Wardhaugh: 2006). Internal change in languageis

observed through its consequences. Therefore, to write internal
histories of language showing the structural changes that have occured
over periods of time.
A second kind of change in a language is external in nature.
This is change brought about through borrowing. Changes that occur
through borrowing from other dialects or language are often quite
clearly distinguishable, for a while at least, from changes that come
about internally (Wardhaugh: 2006-192). Speakers of different
languages may have different views about borrowing. There are often
good social or cultural reasons for borrowing, and the items that are
borrowed are usually words used to describe new objects or learned or
scientific words.
If the contact between two language communities occur, the
result is borrowing word. For instead, between Indonesia and English
community. Indonesia take a borrowing words mostly from English
words.
B.

Borrowing Word
According to George Yule (2006: 54) in his book, The Study of Language:

Borrowing is the taking over of words from other languages. Borrowing words
are words adopted by the speakers of one language from a different language or
the source language. Kridalaksana was limited it with word which is borrowed

11

from another language and then adapted with the rule of recipient language, for
instead Indonesia language (Kridalaksana,

1996).Based on some definitions

above, it can conclude that borrowing words is taking new words from other
language and using it in recipient language and appropriate it with the system
prevailing in other borrower language or just adopting it.
The major reasons for borrowing words is borrowing a suitable word from
another language to express new ideas activities or concept which is no equivalent
word to mention it.
Mc Mahon (1999: 204) classifies how to borrow a word into two ways.
They are adoption or importation is borrowing a word by maintaining the features
and forms of the donor language. So, the speaker pronounces the world without
any changing as pronounced by the native speaker of the word. Speaker may
produce more adoptions when they are trying to impress someone especially if the
vocabulary involved has particularly prestigious connotations. And the second
way, adaptation or substitution where the borrower may change the loan word by
fitting it with the pattern of the recipient language.
The process of borrowing word from English into Indonesia language
divided into two categories.

1.

Adoption Process
Adoption process is process of borrowing word in a whole form of

word from English, even written or spelling. For example,

12

supermarket in Indonesia language taken from English word

supermarket.

2.

Adaptation Process
Adaptation process is process of borrowing word which adapted

with sound language or spelling and written or language structure based

on Indonesia language. For example, an Indonesia word foto is come
from English word photo.

Based on the explanation above we can know that Borrowing is

phenomenon which occurs in almost some languages. There are two kind
processes of borrowing, adoption process and adadptation process. It means that
when we adopt English words we take all letter of English word, even written or
spelling. In the opposite, when we adapt English word we must take some letters
and appropriate it with the Indonesia language spelling or written. This minithesis
particularly focuses in the written only.

CHAPTER III

Finding
Based on the table above the writer find out total of borrowing words are

350 words, which 140 words by adoption process and 210 words by adaptation
process.
Below are the percentage pattern :
-

Adoption Process

: 140 x 100% = 40%

350

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Chapter V contains the conclusion and the suggestion from the writer.
Based on the research which is done by the writer about English borrowing words
in Business Communication Section of Jawa Pos period December 2013, we can
know how borrowing words can occur and how many percentage between
Adoption Process and Adaptation Process.

A.

Conclusion
After doing the research and getting the findings of Borrowing
words in Business Communication Section in Jawa Pos , the writer take
conclusions as follow:
1.

There are many borrowing words which we can find in the mass
media like newspaper.

2.

There are two kinds of process in Borrowing words; they are

Adoption Process and Adaptation Process. Adoption process is the
process of borrowing word taken in a whole form of word from English
both written or spelling, while Adaptation process is the process of
borrowing word which is adapted with sound or spelling and written or
language structure based on Indonesia language.

43

44

3.

Based on the percentage between Adoption Process and Adaptation

Process, the Borrowing words occur in Communication Business in
Jawa Pos (December 2013) mostly using Adaptation Process.

B.

Suggestion
The writer hopefully this research can give additonal
information about how Borrowing words can occur. Beside that the writer
also will give some suggestion, such as:
1.

Take the object about the same topics in some media like
newspaper, magazine, or internet. Newspaper is the right media if you
need object for analyze, because newspaper contain many variations of
language.

2.

The spelling of words must be given attention, because it can affects

the context and the meaning. You must be carefull in the spelling of
words.

3.

If any student want to analyze the same topics with the writer the
book Introduction to Sociolinguistics by Ronald Wardhaugh and The
Study of Language by George Yule are good reference.
